Are You Praying for Your Family?
By Aletha Hinthorn of Come to the Fire Ministries [In celebration of Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10]

This past week, several of us had dinner with the international evangelist Sammy Tippit. He
said that for years he often stated that he grew up in a secular home with no spiritual
heritage.
But then recently he discovered a written description of his grandmother who died five
years before he was born. It referred to her as a woman of prayer, and stated that she
prayed so fervently the doors of the church shook when she prayed.
Then Sammy understood why the first time he heard the Gospel, he repented and received
Christ. Two nights later he was called to preach. His godly grandmother's prayers were
answered, too, for her son. Sammy's father came to Christ shortly before he died.
God answered his grandmother's prayers in greater ways than she could have anticipated.
Through her prayers she made an impact on millions of lives around the world. Sammy has
preached in more than 80 countries and in evangelistic stadium events in such places as
Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Rio de Janeiro and Albania.
She was one of those who "were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the
things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance" (Hebrews 11:13).
My grandmother was one, too, who believed for her children, but did not receive the
answers except by faith. Two of her four sons were not interested in following Jesus when
she died despite her many prayers.
Not many months after Grandma died, Uncle Les came under great conviction. He felt so
miserable he went to the doctor, but the doctor found nothing wrong. On Sunday morning,
he called Grandma's pastor and said, "I think I need to pray." He walked into the church
during service, and without stopping to sit down, walked to the front and fell at the altar.
Not only was his life transformed but also that of future generations.
Grandma's other son, Uncle Amos, came to faith in Jesus not long before he passed away.
God answers mothers' prayers. Every burdened groan and tear are too precious to Jesus to
waste. Some day, at just the right time, they will be
poured out. "The desire of the righteous shall be God answers mothers’ prayers.
granted" (Proverbs 10:24).
Dear Father, if we knew how wonderful Your plans are for answering our prayers, we would
never grow weary of praying.

Bionic Pastor’s Wife
By Ardell Day
Thank God for crazy-incredible God-inspired technology. That was in an email to us
from Glen Schrieber, our District Superintendent, and Ron’s church planting coach. Our
response: Amen! Thursday, April 23. We left for the hospital at 9AM and I was back home
reading email at 5pm! The surgery went well, the device is in place, and the doctor fully
expects good results when it is activated. Activation day for my Advanced Bionic cochlear
implant is May 19! I have experienced some roller coaster days with dizziness, nausea, and
some imbalance issues but things have settled down. My world remains still most of the
time, the nausea is gone, and I can almost walk a straight line!

Thank you so much for your prayers. Ron and I have felt completely surrounded by them
throughout this entire process. When we think about the “one another” verses throughout
Scripture our hearts are filled with joy, spilling over into thanksgiving to God for each one of
you. You have excelled in your kindness, your love, your generosity, your encouragement,
your prayers, your tender hearts, and your servant hearts. Our desire is that we will all
“Excel still more!” [1 Thessalonians 4:1]

New Message Series for May
It's such a privilege to become a part of God's forever family by stepping across the
threshold of faith! As usual, along with the privileges come responsibilities. One of those
responsibilities is spreading the Good News that Jesus will forgive and accept anyone into
this forever family. At Candlewood we call it Invest & Invite: Let the Light Shine. That
responsibility to invest our lives in others and invite them to Candlewood and ultimately to
Jesus is a tall order full of misconceptions, inexperience, pushbacks, and rewards...oh, and
then there are fears, too. Fortunately God empowers us to do all that he asks us to do. The
Holy Spirit that indwells us floods us with God's power as we draw upon it. For the month
of May Pastor Ron's message series, Partnering with God, tackles all of this.

Beyond Our Corner of the World

How much trouble can it be to put up a 70 foot tower? We can see
communication towers everywhere around us these days. Let’s say it
has to go on a remote hillside on a Caribbean island. It has to be
unhindered by trees and mountains in order to transmit clearly. It
has to be powered by a functioning generator. It has to be secure so
thieves won’t take everything of any value. It has to be safe from the
rather hostile elements of a tropical ocean climate and an occasional
hurricane. Are you getting the picture of the challenge of putting up a
new tower for Bible Basics’ Radio HRGS in Roatan, Honduras?

The current FM tower was in danger of coming down in a storm,
making the need for the new tower more urgent. A better location
was found, allowing for clearer transmission. Up until now, the
greatest obstacles seemed to be administrative. The permit to put up
the tower took months of waiting. The Dixon Hill site for the tower
had its own challenges. The HRGS staff had plenty of other things to
do to keep themselves busy. And, Satan wasn’t that happy that the
Gospel message would be able to go forth even more effectively.
Even so, the permit to erect the tower was granted, and, with the
help of several volunteers, the tower platform, tower base, generator
building and generator have been installed.

On March 16th, Jim Avella arrived from headquarters to join the field
missionaries in the final phase of the tower installation so Radio
HRGS can begin transmitting the message of the Gospel throughout
the Bay Islands using the new tower.

This has truly been a team effort. BBI missionaries at headquarters
have organized the planning, purchasing, and shipping of materials.
BBI missionaries in Honduras have been busy wading through the
government permitting procedures and working hard to get
everything ready and setup on site. Volunteers have come alongside
to help in the construction and installation. And, many of you have
given to make the project possible. Somehow, it seems like that’s the
way God intends for ministry to be carried out. It’s not about one
person or about who gets the credit. This is not a monument to the
work of BBI or HRGS. Let it be said that this tower stands as a
testimony to the faithfulness and the glory of God!

Team Tampa X
Team Tampa X is moving full steam ahead in planning for this year's English Camp in the
Czech Republic. This is one of the largest teams with fourteen members. This will be the
first English Camp experience for five of them. One of them is our own Shelley Cooke.
The other members are from Oakwood Community Church: Chris and Shannon Lehmann,
Lindsey Ernst, Dean Johnson, Rick & Brenda Smith, Mary Lynn Reilly, Andrew Reilly, Eric
Pratt, Kathy Long, Haley Conner, Tana Harper, and Alisa Linares.

Please pray for the team as they continue their preparations, pray for the Brno team as
they work through lesson level assignments, and pray much for those who will be
attending the English Camp. Reservations opened up just a couple of weeks ago and the
camp is almost full! All glory to God who is able to accomplish infinitely more than we
might ask or think [Ephesians 3:20].

Small Group Opportunities
Here at Candlewood Community Church, we take the word “community” seriously. It is our
desire to provide not only genuine love and concern for the neighborhoods where we
worship, but for our members and attendees to experience
genuine community through loving relationships in the setting
of a small group.
It is here in small groups that we unite relationally. Each person
can really be listened to, cared for, and prayed for on a regular
basis. Through this fellowship, the members can meet the
practical needs of one another through the week. Candlewood
Small Groups help to develop vital, practical, supportive
friendships.
We ignite hope as we spend time discovering the meaning of God’s word and its relevance
to our lives. Here character transformation that leads to Christlikeness can flourish as we
encourage each other to apply biblical truths and principles. Our groups also provide
positive opportunities for us to talk and listen to God and see His unique answers to our
prayers.
We believe that it is in a small group that members can begin to identify how God has gifted
them uniquely for significant ministry. It is the place where these gifts can be used as part
of the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. It is also in the context of these
supportive relationships that individuals can be identified, trained and commissioned for
spiritual leadership.
As “children of light” we seek to provide His Light to attract others and bring them into the
life of the small group and the church. As these groups grow numerically, they give birth to
new groups that will further accomplish Candlewood’s mission to share God’s light, igniting
hope, and setting hearts on fire.

Are you involved in a small group? If not, try it … you’ll like it!

May Prayer Emphasis
Without reducing prayer to a formula, in the book 7 Prayers That Will Change Your Life Forever,
Stormie Omartian outlines seven basic types of prayers that can bring lasting peace and positive
change to life: confession, salvation, release, submission, praise, promise, and blessing. Pray these
verses and their truth back to God this month...
May 1-9
Confession
Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose
record the LORD has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty! When I refused to confess my sin,
my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My
strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to
hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the LORD.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.
Psalm 32:1-5
People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.
Blessed are those who fear to do wrong, but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble. Proverbs 28:13-14
Salvation
But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you
will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your
mouth that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”
Romans 10:9-11
May 10-16
Release
Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. John 14:1
When we were controlled by our old nature, sinful desires were at work within us, and the law aroused these evil
desires that produced a harvest of sinful deeds, resulting in death. But now we have been released from the law,
for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the
letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit. Romans 7:5-6
Submission
And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:21
But he gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud
but favors the humble.” So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close
to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is
divided between God and the world. James 4:6-8
May 17-23
Praise
I will praise you seven times a day because all your regulations are just. Those who love your instructions have
great peace and do not stumble. Psalm 119:164-165
Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name.
Hebrews 13:15
May 24-31
Promise
Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence. Ephesians 3:12
For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this
battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:4-5
Blessing
Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be
tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult
you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.
1 Peter 3:8-9
May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show
you his favor and give you his peace. Numbers 6:24-26

What’s In A Name?
Candlewood Community Church …

The term candlewood is any resinous wood that is burned to
produce light, but there actually is a candlewood tree. For
centuries the roots of this tree have been set on fire and used
as torches. In a similar way, we want to bring God’s Light
                               into the darkness.

Our name, Candlewood, is a perfect picture of our willingness
to be used by God to bring His Light to an unconvinced world,
igniting hope, and setting hearts on fire.
