BrightFalls.net community interview with

Remedy

Remedy’s content team hard at work

Very similar to last community interview we held, a month ago we asked the community to start

submitting questions for an interview with Remedy Entertainment. We had

an amazing response and so armed with a great selection of questions we

decided to force Markus Maki to answer the questions that were on the tips

of everyone’s tongues.

Markus is one of the founders of Remedy and works as a Development

Director at the company. He was the project lead for Max Payne 2 and prior

to that worked at Remedy’s sister company Futuremark as the CTO and

leading multiple benchmark projects. With almost 15 years of game

development experience, he now helps where most needed at any given time

to make Alan Wake the best game it can be. He can occasionally be seen

posting on the Remedy Alan Wake forums as well.

Now on to the interview, we’ve split up the questions in to categories similar to how we’ve set up

the Alan Wake FAQ.

Joystiq interviews Remedy’s Oskari Häkkinen

Posted by ADM on 16/07/09

Joystiq have published an interview with Remedy’s Head of Franchise Development, Oskari

Hkkinen. The interview covers a range of questions and finds out a bit more about the Open

world situation with Remedy:

Since daylight drives away the horrors of Bright Falls, what will players be doing in the

daytime? Also, how are weather effects being integrated into gameplay?

During the day there is a possibility for further NPC interaction, uncovering the mystery and the

town of Brightfalls, however, even in daylight there are places that are dark therefore the player

should always be on his toes. We control the day and night cycle and the weather to create drama

and suspense, these factors will dramatically affect gameplay.

It’s true – Remedy comments on No PC

version rumors.

A bit of bad news for those out there who are looking to play Alan Wake on the PC. Remedy

recently confirmed that Alan Wake is currently in development for Xbox 360 only and that plans

for a PC version are now entirely up to their publisher, Microsoft.

“Thank you for your continued interest in Alan Wake. It is accurate that we are currently working

exclusively on the Xbox360 version of Alan Wake. PC plans are currently open, and therefore it?s

safe to say that at least a simultaneous launch with the Xbox version will not happen at this late

stage. Remedy has a deep heritage in PC gaming and would love to see a PC version available to

its PC followers, ultimately however this decision lies with our publisher.”

We’ve also taken the time to update the FAQ to correctly reference the new situation.

Alan Wake to be shown at Comic-Con 2009.

Microsoft recently announced that they plan to showcase Alan Wake and many

of their other games at Comic-Con, which takes place from July 23rd – July

26th.

Microsoft will be holding a media reception on the evening of Thursday, July

23rd which I assume is when they’ll be showcasing Alan Wake off to everyone.

So hopefully we see some new footage around that time, but I can’t make any

promises.

Alan Wake and the Open World.

It seems that many are misconstruing the recent news that Alan Wake is no longer a sandbox

game. Thomas Puha, Creative Director for Pelaaja, recently commented on both Bright Falls and

the official forums stating corrections from the translated article.

“There is still an open world, but due to the story the action is more directed to tell the story better

as you?d expect from Remedy. You can still go explore the world between missions, talk to npc?s,

but the story and the missions are the key things, not open world roaming in the woods.”

“[...] the experience is a bit more directed because of the story and you’d expect that from

Remedy. There’s *plenty* of exploration in the game that the player can do if he wants.”

As was originally stated by Remedy: ?The player must not feel they?re being pulled from strings.

The player must feel like they?re making the decisions themselves?.

Finnish gaming mag Pelaaja recently had a chance to visit Remedy for the first time in 4 years.

In the indepth interview we find out some new information that was still up in the air. Here’s a

quick summary of it all:

- Alan Wake is not late. Before E3 2009, Remedy have never given a release date and all previous

dates found floating on the web were made up by other sources. In fact Remedy have never missed

a release date for any of their previous games and does not intend to with Alan Wake. Alan Wake

will be released Spring 2010 for the Xbox 360.

- The original vision hasn’t changed but the way the game plays out has been experimented with

along the development process. One of the major changes is that the game is no longer a sandbox

type of game where the player can roam freely (ala Grand Theft Auto). Since Remedy wanted to

focus heavily on having a compelling storyline, sandbox style gameplay does not mix well with

what Remedy wanted to achieve. Remedy stressed that this does not mean the game will be linear

and that you have to follow a set path throughout the game. “The player must not feel they’re

being pulled from strings. The player must feel like they’re making the decisions themselves”.

- Throughout the game the player will be finding the missing pages from Alan Wakes new

manuscript, however not all the pages will be found through the normal game’s missions. Similar

to how Bioshock handled it’s audio logs, Alan Wake will allow you to roam freely around looking

for manuscript pages.

- Remedy has said from the beginning that light will be an important element of the gameplay.

Alan Wake’s most important weapons are his flashlight and other light sources found in the game

world. The dark force can possess both the residents and animals in Bright Falls and make even

lifeless objects attack Alan. They are vulnerable only in the light. (Just an addition to this. Light

seems to strip the shield that the darkness adds and once that shield is stripped you can use

conventional weapons, like a gun, to get rid of the enemy -ADM)

- Even though Microsoft is publishing Alan Wake, Remedy still own all rights to the game and

Alan Wake is planned to be only the beginning of the story. Remedy arn’t covering the fact that

they want to expand out into other forms of media as well. Although Remedy have yet to make

any decisions on this.

- Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Remedy haven’t spoken about the PC version of the game yet

and the release of a PC version is up in the air. When asked about it Remedy replied saying that

both Microsoft and them are only speaking about the Xbox 360 version at the moment.

That’s about it. The rest of the article (which you can read here) talks about the demo that was

5 of 47 shown at E3 and how it’s riddled with little details that we all love from a Remedy game. 15/08/09 2:01 AM

Back in 2005 when we were running the site as AlanWAKE.net we held a community interview

where the fans got to submit their questions and Remedy answered them!

It’s that time again and so if there is a questions you’ve wanted Remedy to answer about Alan

Wake then now’s your chance!

There are several ways you can submit questions, you can submit them via email to pete {at}

brightfalls(.)net (please make sure to include the nickname you wish to be credited by) or you

simply send a @reply via Twitter to @remedyalerts!

Please do not submit questions via the comments here!

Also please note that while Remedy would love to answer all questions there are simply some that

they can’t at this time, also not all questions submitted are guaranteed to be answered.

The deadline for all questions is Tuesday 16th June 2009, so you have a little over a week to send

those questions in.

What an eventful week it’s been, especially for the Remedy staff who after presenting the game at

the Microsoft E3 Press conference spent the next 3 days holding backstage demos for all press.

This demo was more or less the same as the one shown at the Press Conference, with one major

exception, this demo was almost twice as long!

While, unfortunately, this footage is not available on the Internet there has been quite a few

Hands-on impressions posted from a lot of sites. In addition to this many previews about the game

were posted. While there’s a bit too many to list all here there is a list being updated at the official

forums here.

Some noticeable highlights are hands-on impressions by IGN, Gamespot, Kotaku and G4.

A lot of these updates were posted on our twitter feed where we keep a more real time tracking of

the news, we like to keep the important updates for this site so that way we don’t flood the front

page with pointless news ;)

Some highlights over the past couple of days were Markus Maki’s E3 behind-the-scenes updates

that he was posting on the official forums.

These are E3 Day Zero – Keynote, E3 Day One – Backroom demos start and E3 Day Three –

Wrap-up.

Also no we can’t forget the interviews with Max Payne .. umm I mean.. Sam Lake at IGN and

Gamespot.

So that’s it. As always you can join us at the official forums to talk with the developers and also all

the news gets posted there quite quickly as well.

I hope you enjoy the flood of Alan Wake news!

Dear people,

We feel we owe you all a small heads up, and our apologies for lack of updates. This

is just part of our psychological thriller, is it all real or imagined…

Seriously, yes, we’re still here and working hard on getting Alan Wake for you to

enjoy. Sure, we’ve been in development for a long time and if everything had gone

perfectly smoothly there probably would be a game out for you guys to play already.

But designing a completely new game can be hard, and sometimes you need to take a

detour to find the best route forward.

We want to entertain you guys in the best possible way and our team is putting in

every effort possible in order for that to happen. That is the way Remedy wants to do

things. I’m sure you will enjoy Alan Wake when we’re done.

Just follow the light…

Remedy respond to TGS 2008 showing

rumours.

The recent news on Alan Wake making the rounds was the old Microsoft Vista promotion

competition which was held early 2007. In this promotion the winner of the competition would

have their face digitized and shown in the game.

The winner who goes by the nickname “duffty” on the Alan Wake forums posted about his

experience over a year ago on the 2nd of July 2007:

“I want to thank remedy for showing myself and my mate round their offices a couple

of weeks back. They are exactly what you expect.. friendly, hard working, fun, finnish,

and bloody clever paople. Thanks again mika and the team who gave us their valuable

time.

ps. use my ugly face as you wish. mark”

Recently this promotion resurfaced and was posted on some major gaming news sites and blogs

and caused quite a stir due to a comment in the promotion which many people confused as

confirmation that Alan Wake will be shown at the 2008 Tokyo Game Show. The comment was

“Let the games begin with a trip to Finland to be digitally mastered into Alan Wake?s world, then

jet off to Tokyo to the 2008 Tokyo Games Show to be on the scene and on the screen!”

Markus Maki, Director of Development at Remedy Games, recently posted squashing this rumour

stating:

Sorry for the confusion and possible disappointment, but this was not an annoucement

that Wake would be shown at TGS 2008. Remedy’s team is just getting back from a

bit of holiday and we haven’t had time to chat with Microsoft on upcoming

shows/showings yet.”

I can safely say that Remedy is hard at work on Alan Wake and when they are ready to show

information you’ll see it here. The game is not cancelled or abandonware.

For all currently known information you can check our extensive collection of quotes in our Alan

Wake FAQ which is updated whenever new information is confirmed by Remedy.

Ilkka Villi talks Alan Wake

Finnish site Tietoviikko recently released an interview with Alan Wake

himself, Ilkka Villi. Alan Wake was modelled after the Finnish actor and in

the interview Villi mentions that he’s visited Remedy several times over the

past couple of years, the most recent session time being last year.

Unfortunately we don’t have a translation of the article but Kotaku had a

paragraph of the article translated where Ilkka mentions that being in a

production this huge in Finland is the closest to being in Hollywood that

he’ll ever get. If you are able to translate the article for us please contact us.

Huge thanks to Nils (and also Henna Lehto) for providing translation to the

their surprises a secret until the show actually starts. We will just have to wait and see…

Computer And Videogames.com recently interviewed Microsoft Game Studios Shane Kim and in

the interview he mentioned that Alan Wake will not be shown at the Spring Showcase as they are

controlling the release of new information very carefully with Remedy.

“When you can announce a game and get people really excited about it, the last thing you want to

do is show it before it’s ready. Alan Wake is pretty ambitious, in terms of what it’s trying to do. It’s

taking a very different approach to storytelling and gameplay and it’s taking a lot of work to get it

right.”

Wait before you started screaming “Where am I going to see the screenshots!?” let me first explain

that the media gallery was a real pain in the ass to keep up since we had screenshots in news posts

and also in that gallery. We had to maintain each one and that was quite annoying.

Also since BrightFalls.net is not a fansite and the site is and has always been a news site dedicated

to the game we thought we need to focus more on the news than on other sections like that.

Now having said all that the screenshots (and videos) have all been back posted in the news

Yes we know it’s not really major news and that it’s been quite slow

around here lately, we’ve had some interesting rumours surface in

the past month that we were quick to dismiss as false. Just a heads

up to everyone that we will only publish news stories here that

aren’t rumours or false in any way, if we do we will specifically

state it’s a rumour and should be treated as such.

Anyway now that’s out of the way onto the “news”. The Corporate

Vice President of Microsoft Game Studios, Shane Kim recently

answered 10 questions for gaming website Game Daily. In there he

still mentions Alan Wake as one of the games that we can look

forward to “later this year and beyond”, note the word beyond there.

Wired.com recently interview Shane Kim, corporate vice president

of Microsoft Game Studios. Shane talked about Alan Wake and

what lies ahead and why they are holding back on releasing

information about the game.

… “it is an ambitious, different kind of game. It’s exactly like the

conversation we just had about Too Human. We’ve got to be careful

about how we unveil that, right, so that we build on the excitement

that people have and we don’t do any damage there. The good news

is that it remains one of our most anticipated titles. Everybody’s

asked me about it, which is awesome. Remedy’s a great partner for

us. I think we’re going to have a huge hit on our hands.”

Alan Wake to be shown at GDC 2008?

Well according to Robbie Bach, President of Entertainment & Devices Division at Microsoft it is.

In a recent interview by Sith Gamer Robbie said this:

SG: One thing you talked about are the games- so far I think the 2008 year seems

to be lacking. Especially when put up against the PS3 or Wii.

RB: Well were saving a lot of stuff for GDC, which is where we plan on showing off

some big titles such as Halo Wars and Alan Wake.

Now I don’t know how accountable a site like Sith Gamer is, especially for a web blog hosted at

wordpress.com, so take this with grain of salt for the time being. Also GDC is the Game

Developer’s Conference held on the 18th to 22nd February this year.

Alan Wake – Most Wanted Game roundup.

A couple of big name sites have listed Alan Wake on their most wanted game of 2008 lists.

- PC Gamer – “The only question is whether the developers can marshal their impressive

technology around a creepy ghost-town ride without resorting to clich. Given that Remedy’s last

game was the hilariously tongue-in-cheek shooter Max Payne, we kind of hope not.”

- Gamespy – “The developers at Remedy have created an impressive engine that sports nifty

weather and lighting effects, allowing them to craft highly atmospheric environments. We can’t

wait to lose ourselves (and our minds) in this one.”

- Voodoo Extreme – “Remedy is the company that developed the Max Payne series, and it’s hard

to not become excited.”

- The Sun – “Then there’s Alan Wake, another that’s been in development for more than two years

but looks fantastic.”

Know some more? Email us and we’ll update the list!

Interview with Markus Mäki at PCGH.

Posted by ADM on 22/01/08

German site PC Games Hardware has an interview with Remedy’s Director of Development,

Markus Mki. The interview answers some basic questions that weren’t known before such as

Quad Cores will receive up to 30% of a performance gain and the official name of the Alan Wake

engine is .. well just that. Who would have known?

One thing to clarify from this interview is that the title states “DX10 support still uncertain” which

can be misread as it being unlikely that Remedy will support DX10. Remedy is keeping quiet

about anything DX10 related but I’m sure we’ll start hearing more and more as time goes on.

Another thing is that it seems a lot of gaming sites out there (*cough* Kotaku *cough) are for

some reason thinking that Alan Wake being Vista exclusive is “news”, even though that’s been

known since 2006.

Keep hangin’ in there everyone.

Hello gang! We are proud to finally launch BrightFalls.net, the premier news source for Alan

Wake and Remedy Entertainment.

We have been hard at work for the past couple of months developing a news site that allows you to

interact and comment on the latest Alan Wake news direct from Remedy or the community.

Through services like Facebook and our inbuilt RSS feed you are able to follow the news very

easily.

Just a little history for all you new folk out there. BrightFalls.net has been around in some form or

another since early 2005 where we launched the community site AlanWake.net, the first Alan

Wake fansite on the net and what would later become the official community site. AlanWake.net

went down at the start of 2006 where it was merged into AlanWake.com and can now be found in

the form of the Alan Wake official forums. Since then the news was one area which wasn’t

handled very well within the forums and there were a number of attempts to get a dedicated news

site up.

BrightFalls.com was one of those attempts, which due to a database corruption prematurely exited

the online world. BrightFalls.com no longer is running and for anyone who still has the bookmark

for that site please update it to BrightFalls.net.

We tried to recover as much older news as we could and theres even a nice little Christmas present

from Remedy which offers you a new screenshot. We know it’s not much but it’s the best we could

do during this media blackout. If you crave some info on the game then may I suggest heading

over and checking out our in-depth Alan Wake FAQ where we answer every single question

currently known about the game?

So that’s about it. Browse around the site and be sure to comment on the news (don’t need to

register but it would be nice, it would also allow you to enter competitions and more features in

the future!). If theres something you’d like to see here then feel free to post a reply here.

We hope you like the new replacement for the Alan Wake news forum, BrightFalls.net.

Not really Alan Wake related but it’s news worthy anyway. Max Payne and Max Payne 2 are now

Unfortunately the Max Payne games still have issues on Vista but those who have found it hard to

find the games in stores can now purchase them very easily.

Gamepro.com has a new article up on their site titled “The 48 Best Games of 2008″ and our

beloved Alan Wake falls in at the 17th position:

Why you should care: Horror writer A. Wake (get it?) finds himself trapped in one of

those nightmarish situations that video game characters so often get themselves into.

As Wake, players will have to use light-what little there is-to good advantage, as the

game’s monstrous enemies are susceptible to it. Wake will also have to piece together

what’s happening to him in the creepy, haunted world of Bright Falls.

Why you shouldn’t: If A. Wake is simply dreaming, someone is going to get

punched. In the neck.

Tilt.tv Alan Wake Interview

Posted by ADM on 14/01/07

Finnish television show Tilt.tv had a interview with Petri Jrvilehto, Sami Jrvi (aka Sam Lake)

and Saku Lehtinen a couple months ago which we unfortunately missed. The interview was

recorded and uploaded on YouTube, albeit in very low quality.

What distinguishes this from the rest is that throughout the interview pictures are shown of the

Pacific Northwest in Washington, where Alan Wake is based on. Some of them are very cool to

check out; especially the motion capture one.

While the whole interview is in Finnish (can anyone send a translation over?) you still get a good

idea by watching.

Alan Wake preview at Hooked Gamers

Posted by ADM on 18/12/06

Hooked Gamers has an preview up which does a good job in summarising all available

information, though unfortunately without offering anything new.

This level of commitment really shows in the game. The town and the nature around it

are more realistic that anything we’ve seen to date. The draw distance of 2 kilometres

(1.2 miles) ensures that buildings and trees will not just pop up out of nowhere as you

cruise down a mountainous road and admire a view of a beautifully rippling lake

surrounded by mountains on your left. Try to imagine this scene and add to this a

realistic movement of the sun on the sky (and resultant shadows cast by the mountains

and every other item in the landscape), sunsets and sunrises as well as eerie night-time

lighting from street lamps and flashlights. Now, try to throw in ultra-realistic fog

effects and twisters that rip apart houses piece by piece, sucking them up to the sky

and throwing them around the landscape.

Check out the rest of the preview at HookedGamers.com.

ComputerAndVideoGames.com has a preview up featuring quite a bit of new information and also

some new screenshots from Alan Wake.

?Missions are built around a single linear storyline, so that the player always knows how to

progress, but then there are other story fragments spread all around the world – smaller games for

the player to mess around with,? continues Jrvilehto. ?While we allow for free-roaming

exploration, we don?t want you to get lost or frustrated.?

Check out the preview here and you can view the screens below.

Thanks SlamDunk for the heads up.

PCPowerplay Alan Wake Preview

Posted by ADM on 21/11/06

Another Australian magazine has a Alan Wake preview up and this time it?s

PC gaming magazine, PCPowerplay. There?s a tiny bit of new information

and a cool little Q&A with Sam and Petri. ?We set out to build the first

psychological action thriller in games,? says Lake. ?We wanted to clearly

raise the bar for story telling in video games and set out to build a movie-like

atmosphere, compelling situations, and memorable characters.? It?s a

sentiment echoed by the game?s creative director Petri Jrvilehto. ?Alan

Wake feels like a logical step forward,? he says, ?taking some of the things

that worked in our previous games further, such as themes aimed for grownup

gamers, cinematic atmosphere, and storytelling. We have a record of creating games with unique

cinematic presentation and exceptionally high production values – but felt that we could take this

so much further.?

?Mystery is an important part of a good thriller,? says Lake, ?as are tight atmosphere and

suspense. But on the other hand we are known for action and there will be plenty of cool and

cinematic engagements. We wanted to steer clear of horror and gore, which often means buckets

and buckets of blood. The idea is to stay in a more stylised and tasteful area.?

Hyper Magazine Alan Wake Preview

Posted by ADM on 21/11/06

Australian magazine Hyper has a writeup on their impressions of the Alan Wake showing at X06.

?The game is played form a third person perspective similar to that of Max Payne, although the

screen is devoid of the usual HUD. Instead players get the occasional hand writing mission

briefing and Wake?s own internal narrative to let them know what to do. Although we have only

seen a brief amount of gameplay the use of first person narrative looks as though it will work very

nicely for both exposition and immersion. After a little running around and showing off the

character animations and cloth physics of Alan?s flapping coat, the first actual gameplay segment

of the demo began with Alan talking to a gas station attendant who tells him to head on up to the

cabin in the nearby mountains. Jumping in a 4WD, Wake begins the drive up the mountains. We

haven?t had any hands on time with the game but from what we were shown the driving engine

looks solid and realistic. More importantly it was also explained to us that as well as utilizing the

episodic narrative, Alan Wake is going to be an open world game in which players can approach

the story as they see fit and will have ample opportunities to explore the mysteries of Bright Falls

and be rewarded for their inquisitiveness.

During the drive up the mountains the voiceover kicked in, explaining how the drive seems to

mimic a passage in his notebook, if only a hitchhiker would appear. Lo and behold a stranger with

his thumb out does turn up and, contrary to conventional wisdom, Wake picks him up. Just as we

begin to internally groan at the ?coincidence?, the voiceover, with immaculate comic timing

laconically says ?creepy?. Alan comments to his passenger that in his book a man picks up a

strange hitchhiker. The hitcher assumes he?s meant to be the killer in the story but Wake sets him

straight telling him that in fact it is the hitchhiker who dies. A little further up the road Alan comes

across what appears to be the scene of a hit and run accident. A body lays bloodied in the centre

of the road (a body that seems to be dressed almost identically to Alan Wake) and our hero goes to

investigate. Shortly after he gets out of the car an out of control truck slams into it killing the

hitchhiker, proving more of the mysterious written notes to be true. To make things even stranger

the body on the road is no longer there and Alan remembers the next part of the writing that says

that the hitchhiker will stalk him in some fashion, before finally passing out.?

Unfortunately since they were pictures taken of a moving demo they came out quite blurry. Even

so they still give you a good idea at what the media saw behind those doors.
