CONFIDENTIAL - Release Notes for Voyager Version 2001.2.
RELEASE NOTES
Voyager 2001.2 & Extension Products
Release Overview
Endeavor Information Systems builds on its existing success as the provider of the most comprehensive integrated
library management system with Voyager 2001.2. Focusing on the needs of academic and research libraries and the
patrons they serve, Endeavor provides a wide array of completely integrated tools to manage library collections,
regardless of location or format. In response to customer feedback, Voyager’s 2001.2, release significantly extends
Circulation module functionality while strengthening Voyager’s industry-leading staff productivity tools in other
modules. Here are just some of the new features coming in Voyager 2001.2:
• Circulation enhancements, including Circulation Clusters
• New Course Reserves capabilities
• Newly designed System Administration
• Security features, including data encryption
• Enhanced productivity in Technical Services
• Additional search limits in WebVoyáge
Voyager 2001.2 delivers the first phase of Circulation enhancements designed to accommodate a broad range of
local policies and practices. Circulation clusters provide a new level of policy control enabling library consortia
and other multi-political organizations to coordinate the independent circulation operations of a group of libraries.
Many enhancements in Circulation focus on staff productivity. To serve patrons more effectively, libraries will have
increased control over the display of pick-up locations in WebVoyáge for circulation requests, as well as increased
flexibility when implementing circulation security overrides –these are just a few of the new features.
Course Reserves enhancements in Voyager 2001.2 provide library staff with improved searching options –
courses associated with each title display immediately in the results list, eliminating the need for further searching.
With automated Course Reserves activation an offline batch process allows libraries to manage course reserves
more efficiently and track reserve statistics for each item on reserve.
System Administration has been redesigned for Voyager 2001.2 to provide better navigation and improve staff
productivity in setting up Voyager. Productivity improvements include easier navigation between screens, capability
to multi-select dates and entry of date ranges.
Security features in Voyager 2001.2 include encryption to ensure that data moving between Voyager clients and
servers is secure and in the Circulation client, patron privacy is protected by masking Social Security
Numbers from unauthorized operators and clearing patron information from charge screens after a new
time-out interval has elapsed.
Productivity enhancements also include a variety of new BulkImport options - libraries may copy holdings fields
into a new MFHD when importing records and to create MFHDs, items and purchase orders, even when
bibliographic records are not added to the database. Bi-directional merge allows libraries to only add selected fields
from incoming bibliographic records to existing bibliographic records when bibliographic records are imported into
the database via BulkImport. A new email shortcut in Acquisitions makes it easier than ever for staff to correspond
with vendors. Granular global data change gives libraries the ability to easily and only change subfield codes and
contents in bibliographic records.

In Voyager 2001.2, libraries may configure WebVoyáge so that patron searches are automatically limited to a
location limit group so it’s even easier for patrons to find exactly the resources they need.
Linking patrons to library resources and responding to feedback from its library partners and trends in library
automation, Endeavor continues to provide a powerful integrated library management system that meets the
demands of today’s academic and research libraries and consortia.
Although this document lists features that we expect to make available to our customers in Voyager 2001.2,
Endeavor reserves the right to add or remove any features as necessary.
Circulation Enhancements
Voyager 2001.2 includes a host of new features and capabilities in Circulation that provide libraries increased
flexibility to perform circulation activities the way they need to – accommodating local practice and policy as well
as patron needs. A direct result of circulation enhancement committee rankings and recommendations of the
Circulation Task Force customer members, this first phase of Circulation module enhancements delivers the staff
productivity tools customers ranked as most important. In succeeding releases of Voyager, Endeavor will continue
to work with the Circulation Task Force until their list of enhancements is incorporated into Voyager.
Circulation Clusters
Circulation Clusters in Voyager 2001.2 add a new level of policy control to the Circulation module, providing
consortia and other multi-political organizations a way to use a single Voyager database to manage the independent
circulation operations of a group of libraries. Each circulating unit within the database will have independent
circulation policies and be able to control access to its collection from other units. Within a single Voyager database,
administrators will be able to define sets of Patron Groups and Policy Groups (and, by extension, locations), which
operate as independent entities for circulation purposes. Circulation clusters will also provide routing and requesting
between clusters so libraries can manage circulation of materials between different library units. Each Cluster will
have an independent patron file; patrons' circulation transactions will be controlled by Universal Borrowing-like
policy controls outside their home cluster.
Item Status–Claims Returned
In Voyager 2001.2, libraries will have the option to stop accruing fines and the generation of notices when a patron
claims materials have been returned, that is, when the Item Status is Claims Returned.

Notice intervals
Voyager 2001.2 enables authorized operators to define unique intervals for item types and patron groups, providing
libraries more flexibility over the notices generated and sent to patrons.

Due date/time for overnight loans
Libraries will be able to set a fixed due date/time for overnight loans without any manual editing by staff. This
feature also applies to short loans and reserve items, greatly reducing operator training time and errors while
increasing efficiency. The library specifies a fixed due time as the next open day as well as a time at which that fixed
due time becomes effective. For example, the library may specify that after 10pm (the effective time), all overnight
loans are due at 10am the next open day—regardless of the item’s loan period interval.

Email shortcuts
Voyager 2001.2 adds a new email shortcut to patron records, enabling library staff to easily send email messages to
patrons. This new feature uses the email address stored in a patron’s record and the email application used by the
library.
The new email shortcut in the Patron record appears next to the patron’s last name
Granular display of patron-initiated request block reasons
So that patrons will have as much information as possible about their requests, in Voyager 2001.2 the reasons why
requests are being blocked are available for patron viewing, without requiring intervention by library staff. In the
Patron Information page of WebVoyáge, the patron will be notified of any Circulation patron blocks they have
incurred.
Override maximum loan limit
In yet another feature designed to accommodate both libraries and patrons, at the library’s discretion, patrons will be
able to renew any or all of their items if they have reached the Maximum Items Borrowed limit for their policy
group.

Improved handling of exception dates
To increase staff efficiency, the handling of exception dates has been improved in Voyager 2001.2, resulting in the
elimination of a significant number of keystrokes. The Exception Dates tab will be sorted by year first, then month
and date, allowing an operator to see all of the dates for a particular year in one “chunk” of the list. As exceptions
are deleted from the list, Sysadmin will highlight the next date in the list rather than jumping the operator back to the
top of the exception list. Operators will have the capability to multi-select exceptions dates for deletion, rather than
deleting one at a time.
Date intervals added
Data entry is also minimized with Voyager’s new date interval feature. Operators will be able to enter date intervals
in Circulation calendars rather than entering each date separately. For example, if a library is closed for 10
consecutive days, Voyager will allow the date range to be entered, instead of the 10 days individually.

Circulation Security
Voyager 2001.2 provides Circulation staff with increased flexibility in handling overrides for patron and item
blocks. Libraries will be able to define explicitly which of the 23 patron blocks and which of the 18 item blocks an
operator has the security to override – no longer will staff have to perform overrides for blocks the library has
determined do not require special intervention. Additionally, only one override will be necessary for multiple blocks
on one transaction, eliminating the need for staff to override one block at a time for a single transaction.

The new Circulation Security Profiles for Patron Blocks in System Administration
Status Patron Groups
This feature allows libraries to use the circulation subsystem to display messages to the patrons. For example, the
library can indicate to the patrons that an item is kept in a particular study carrel or that an item is at the bindery. The
“Charged” status of such items will display in WebVoyáge using library-configurable text.
Pick-up location in WebVoyáge
With Voyager 2001.2, libraries will be able to control which circulation “happening” locations will display as
appropriate pick-up locations in WebVoyáge for Circulation requests. The library will also be able to define a
default pick-up location.
Call Slip
The Voyager Call Slip Daemon will be able to print any variable data field elements from MARC bibliographic
records. This allows libraries to print the information they need and increases staff efficiency by eliminating the time
spent looking for the needed information.

3M Standard Interface Protocol (SIP)
The 3M Standard Interface Protocol (SIP) allows a third-party system, whether it’s a selfcheck machine or a
telephone renewal system, to send a Patron Information request message as a superset of the Patron Status message.
The Voyager’s support for this message gives you a broader selection of selfcheck equipment.
Course Reserves
Improved searching options in Course Reserves
With Voyager’s new Course Reserves functionality in Circulation, library operators will be able to search by
barcode to find materials on course reserve. The results list retrieved will show all courses associated with each title.
Automated Course Reserves activation
In Voyager 2001.2 libraries will have an offline automated (batch) process to activate and de-activate course
reserves. Additionally, there will be a an option that permits libraries to ‘zero out’ the reserve counter when an item
goes off reserve – this feature enables libraries to retain reserve statistics for each item. Operators will also be
alerted when reserve items are added, deleted or updated to indicate that the item is on multiple reserve lists.
Streamlined addition of Course Reserve items
Adding many items to a Course Reserve list is easier than ever. Staff can enter scan many item barcodes to a list,
one right after the other, without having to hit the Enter key and then reopening the barcode entry dialog box. This
change increases staff efficiency and reduces Course Reserve processing time.
Security
Encryption
Recognizing that security is a critical issue for our customers, with the implementation Voyager 2001.2, all
communications between Voyager clients and servers will be encrypted.
Masking of Social Security Number in the Circulation client
To protect patron privacy, Social Security Numbers will be masked from unauthorized operators in Voyager 2001.2.
Time-out interval to clear patron information
This new security feature in Voyager 2001.2 adds a library-defined ‘time-out’ interval to the Charge function in the
Circulation module. When library staff first access a patron record in the charge window in Circulation, a timer will
begin to count. When the time-out interval has elapsed, the patron and charge information will be cleared from the
screen completely. When an action takes place, charging an item

System Administration
Newly designed interface
The Voyager System Administration interface has been redesigned for Voyager 2001.2. The new interface increases
staff productivity by making it easier to navigate the screens and find the information that is needed. It is also more
consistent with other interfaces in Voyager, making navigating the many screens much easier and reducing the
training time for staff.
Productivity Enhancements in Technical Services
Bi-directional merge
A new type of “Merge” profile, called a “bi-directional merge” has been added. This profile extends current merge
functionality in that it will retain fields in an existing bibliographic record when that record is replaced (as in
Voyager 2001.1) but will also add fields to an existing bibliographic record if the record is not replaced by the
merge process. In other words, when an imported record matches an existing record, but does not replace it because
of the profile’s quality hierarchy, the merge fields from the incoming record will still be added to the existing record.
All other fields in the existing record will be preserved in this case. In addition to consortia, multi-library institutions
that do not have a de-duplicated union catalog may use the bi-directional merge feature to enhance bibliographic
records by, for example, adding specific access points for titles they may have in common.
In the following example, the 650 fields is to be protected during BulkImport.
Incoming Record: Existing Record of higher quality:
100 $a Tims, JoEllen P. 100 $a Tims, JoEllen.
245 $a Technical Reports. 245 $a Technical Reports.
590 $a Special series on Superfund sites 650 $a Reports $x Indexes
650 $a Reports $x Periodicals
Using Voyager 2001.2’s new bi-directional merge feature, the 590 field in the incoming record is added to the
existing record even thought the incoming record is not replaced:
100 $a Tims, JoEllen P.
245 $a Technical Reports.
590 $a Special series on Superfund sites
650 $a Reports $x Periodicals
Additional BulkImport options
Option to Create Subsequent MFHDs
In Voyager 2001.2 libraries will be able to create a MFHD, items and PO line items, if they choose, even if a
bibliographic record is not being added to the database. The incoming bibliographic record will be discarded during
the BulkImport process if the record already exists in the database.

Copy holdings fields into new MFHD
Voyager 2001.2 enhances BulkImport functionality and increases productivity with this new feature. When
importing a bibliographic record, libraries will have the option to copy holdings fields, like the 85x and 86x,
automatically into the newly created MFHD. The holdings fields will only be copied when records are added using
an “Unconditional” BulkImport rule.
A new BulkImport option allows libraries to copy holdings fields when importing records

Improved Prediction of Serials for Continuous Enumeration
Responding to customers, Voyager’s serials prediction capabilities have been enhanced to predict continuously
enumerated titles correctly. With Voyager 2001.2, libraries will be able to easily manage publications with
continuous numbering in multiple enumeration levels.
New capabilities will permit more accurate prediction of continuously enumerated serials by allowing operators to
add incremented levels where each level can be designated as continuous or restart with the associated number of
issues, if any. The operator can also specify an issue on which to base a restarted prediction level.
The new Prediction of Serials for Continuous Enumeration
Granular global data change - the ability to change subfield labels
Enhancing Voyager’s current Global Headings Change capabilities, Voyager 2001.2 enables libraries to change
records in which the old and new headings differ only by the subfield code. With this new feature, when authority
control staff edit an authorized subject heading but change only a subfield delimiter (changing "‡x Periodicals" to
"‡v Periodicals", for instance) the change in subfield delimiter will be sufficient to queue all affected headings for
global change. Presently a change in the normalized text is required to queue headings for global change. In
addition, staff can create new headings by replacing the old subfield text in the affected headings with new text. For
example, “650 $a Reports” can be changed to “650 $a Bulletins.” Improved Global Data Change functionality such
as this simplifies database maintenance activities for today’s busy technical services staff.

Client/Server Version Check
Starting in Voyager 2001.2, when an operator launches a client application, Voyager will automatically check to see
if the client and server versions match. If they do not, Voyager will display an informational alert. Additionally,
libraries will be able to specify a URL in the “voyager.ini” file for each client, allowing the operator to easily
connect to a web site, ftp site, etc. in order to obtain the new client(s). Note that while Voyager will provide the
functionality to define and connect to a remote server, the library will be required to maintain its server and any
software on it.
Email shortcut for vendor correspondence
This new feature in will allow users to send email messages to a vendor, using the electronic mail address stored in
the vendor record. Library staff will be able to access this function using a new email button added to several forms
in the Acquisitions module such as those for line items, purchase orders, invoices, vendor information and in the
subscription maintenance workspace.
.
The new email shortcut appears next to the Vendor Code field in the Order Detail screen

Updated MARC tag tables
Voyager’s MARC tag tables have been updated in 2001.2 to include changes announced in:
• OCLC Technical Bulletin 244
• RLIN Memory Aid 4th ed, 10/01
• Update No. 2 (October 2001) of the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data
RLIN Character Mapping
This is a name change. The new name will be RLIN Legacy.
Spine Labels
Spine label processing was completely rewritten for this release. This solved many reported problems and improved
on the processing. Some examples of printing that are now correct are:
• Line wrapping
• Truncation
• Font size changes
• Long Dewey numbers
WebVoyáge
Default location limit
Voyager 2001.2 makes it even easier to link patrons and library resources by permitting libraries to configure
WebVoyáge so that patron searches are automatically limited to a location – or location limit group – by default.
Particularly useful for sites whose databases include the catalogs of several libraries, all subsequent searches the
patron conducts during a session will have this initial location limit applied (unless the user chooses another
location). When a new WebVoyáge session is started, the default initial location limit will be reset.
Patron Web Service Authentication Adaptor
WebVoyáge will have the capability to allow a library to use its own or a third party authentication system in
conjunction with the WebVoyáge patron login functionality to validate patrons. The library can have the patron use
the standard WebVoyáge login screen or can have the patron use the external authentication system. The library also
has the ability to bypass the standard WebVoyáge login screen and use the external authentication system in its
place. This allows the library to set up its own login procedures and requirements and allows the library to use login
parameters other than what is supplied with the standard WebVoyáge patron login screen.
Generating Links in OpenURL Format from WebVoyáge
It will now be possible to create an URL from a bibliographic record in Open URL format. This will allows
WebVoyáge to interface with Endeavor’s LinkFinder Plus and other OpenURL compliant linking servers. The
OpenURLs can be created from any database the Voyager OPAC accesses, including the local Voyager
bibliographic database.

Table Border Customization
In order for you to better control and manage the look and feel of WebVoyáge, the border size on the table of the
titles is now customizable. That is, you can set the size of the border with a number starting with zero. The lower
the number, the smaller the borders on the table will appear. The default is one. We do not recommend anything
larger than three.
Media Type Graphic
You can now configure WebVoyáge to display a graphical representation of the media type of an item in the result
set display. For example, you can use an image to represent a book, versus video, versus audio. This will help
present a more visually exciting and modern display for your patrons.
Reporter
Reporter now supports Office XP.
Resource Sharing
Universal Borrowing
Editing Stub Patron Records
Stub Patron Records can now be edited. When an operator edits a stub record, the changes in the stub record will be
preserved even if the information in the parent record is updated. Any information that is not changed in the stub
record will still be replicated from the parent patron record. For example, if the temporary address is changed in a
stub record, that address will be preserved, but the stub patron record's permanent address will still be updated if the
permanent address in the parent patron record changes. Stub patron records can have independent addresses, phone
numbers, expiration dates and purge dates. The institution ID, SSN and name information will always be replicated
from the parent patron record.
Manual Mapping of Patrons
Universal Borrowing Libraries will be able to specify that some remote patrons must be “Manually Mapped” into
stub patrons as part of the Universal Borrowing process. A patron whose patron group is one of the “Manually
Mapped'”sets will not have Universal Borrowing privileges until the patron visits the circulation desk at the library
they wish to borrow from and have a patron group assigned by a circulation operator. This allows libraries to
provide Universal Borrowing privileges to patrons selectively. The “Manual Map” policy is controlled by patron
group.
UB/Demerits Integration
With Release 2001.2, demerits is being integrated into UB and Circulation Clusters. Demerits are a non-monetary
fine levied for overdue items. Demerits will be reported to the patron’s home library for blocking purposes at the UB
Policy Definition level. Accrued demerits will also be reported back to the patron’s home library. Demerits from all
UB databases and/or clusters will be displayed in the Patron Information screen of WebVoyáge.

As part of the UB/Demerits Integration, accrued monetary fines are being incorporated into UB. This allows
Voyager to indicate to staff and patrons, the fines the patron owes up to the time the staff or patron views the amount
of fines owed.
Interlibrary Loan
Check Local Holdings in Borrowing
Staff will be able to check the local database to see if a patron’s request is held locally. This will allow libraries to
provide faster service to patrons if a request can be filled from the local database. It will also reduced a libraries ILL
expenses if they can fill a patron’s request locally.
Interface with CISTI (Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information)
Voyager will be able to interface with CISTI. In order to communicate with the ILL module, CISTI requires an
uniquely formatted email. The ILL module will have an interface that uses this unique email format to communicate
with CISTI. Libraries can now use CISTI as their document supplier or one of their document suppliers.
Peer-to-peer ISO
The Voyager ILL module will be able to communicate with other ILL products through the ISO standard. This
eliminates the need to define email formats for each external ILL product.
Delivery of Ariel files to end users
Libraries will be able to send Ariel files direct to patrons. This reduces the ne need for patron’s to physically go to
the library to pick up a document. This also allows staff to spend time on other issues than having to “hand out”
documents to patrons.
