Downloading, Installing, Configuring and Using the Voyager Clients
Downloading the Clients
• The clients are available on the ILCSO website at:
http://www.ilcso.uiuc.edu/web/voyager/execute
• At that URL, you will be prompted for a username and password. Use the following:
Name: ILCSO
Password: GetClient1
• You will be downloading the three files under the heading "Clients 2001.1 GOLD
(Build 1717)”. These files are named:
1) voyagerconfig.exe
2) voyagerprograms.exe
3) voyagersystem.exe
• Click on each file separately to download them to your PC. Load these executables
to your PC desktop for ease of installation.
NOTE: if you have previously installed earlier versions of the Voyager client on
your PC, you MUST follow the instructions below for deleting a font on your PC
before installing the updated version. If your PC has never had the clients installed,
you can skip this process.
BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE NEW CLIENTS: There is a font issue that needs to be
corrected. People who have previous versions of Voyager must do this process before
client installs. The old Voyager font must be deleted but in only one way:
Start
Settings
Control Panel
Fonts
Highlight Voyager Font
File
Delete
Only in this way will the delete be done correctly. Don't use the keyboard or any
shortcuts, else the registry will be wrong.
Then the clients may be installed.

Installing the Clients on your PC
• To install the clients, click on each .exe file in order (1-3). It is recommended that you
choose to place the files in the default folder (Voyager). The installation wizard will
take you through this process painlessly; however, please make note of the following
points before you install the Gold clients:
• Once a database is upgraded to 2001.1 Gold, you can use either the 2001.1 Gold or
2001.1 Early Release (ER) clients to access the upgraded database. However, you
cannot use the 2001.1 Gold clients to access a database that has not yet been
upgraded to 2001.1 Gold. Attempts to connect to a library's 2001.1 ER (non-
upgraded) database with the 2001.1 Gold client software will fail.
• The most recent version of the client defaults to the Voyager folder. Libraries should
note that installing the 2001.1 Gold clients in the same directory on the PC as the
Early Release client will replace all files in the directory, including the Voyager.ini
files as well as the cataloging tag tables. Since staff have been making changes to
some of these files, they should either be placed in a different directory prior to the
Gold client installation to allow access to the information after the install, OR, you
can rename the folder which has previous version of the client prior to installing the
Gold version (and thus retain both client versions). A suggested naming convention
for earlier versions is to include the version number within the folder name (e.g.,
Voyager2000, Voyager2001ER, etc.).
• When you install voyagerprograms.exe, you will reach a screen that allows you to
select the components you wish to install. You do not have to install all of these
components on each machine. Only install those that are useful to the operator of
that machine. Also, since there are no security restrictions for the Callslip and
Reporter components, they are accessible to anyone with an operator ID. Therefore,
you will probably want to think carefully about which machines require these
modules.
Configuring the Clients
Voyager.ini file:
After you’ve installed a new version of the client, the Voyager.ini file will no longer have
your server and port information. You will need to re-enter the server/port info, following
the directions below, OR, (if you have kept the earlier client version) you can simply copy
the voyager.ini file from your previous version, into the current Voyager folder (and skip
the rest of this section).
In order for the clients to function properly, they must be configured to point at the
correct server/port combination. Within the Voyager folder that was created by the client
installation process, you'll see a text file named "Voyager" (often referred to as the
"voyager.ini").
• Click on the Voyager file. This will open it up in Windows' Notepad.
• In the file, you'll see eight stanzas, one for each client application (OPAC;
Cataloging, etc.). Each stanza contains the following components:
June 2002
• Server=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Port=70xx (the xx value will differ in each client stanza)
Timeout=60
On each PC, the values in the Voyager.ini file for Server and Port will need to be
replaced with your library's actual data. You will use the same values that you used with
your Voyager Early Release client.
Cataloging tag table files:
If you have edited the cataloging tag table files, Hmarc0xx and Bmarc0xx, in the earlier
version, you will either need to copy and paste those files into your new Voyager
directory: Voyager/Catalog/TagTable/Oclc/ OR make the edits suggested in the memo
entitled “Voyager cataloging info, slightly revised,” which was emailed to the TechSig
and Liaisons lists on June 6.
Callslip.ini file:
If you have edited the callslip.ini file in the earlier version, you will either need to copy
and paste that file into your new Voyager/Misc/ directory, or make the needed edits
directly to the callslip.ini file.
Circ.ini file:
If you have edited the circ.ini file in the earlier version, you will either need to copy and
paste that file into your new Voyager/Circulation/ directory, or make the needed edits
directly to the circ.ini file.
Using the Clients
It might be convenient to make a shortcut for each client module and drag it onto your
PC desktop for ease of access. Remember that to be able to use the Voyager Gold, you
will need to wait until your database has been upgraded to Voyager Gold, as per the
upgrade schedule posted at
To start using a client:
• Click the client icon. At the prompt, enter your Operator ID and Password.
• Please note that your preference and default settings within the Acquisitions,
Cataloging, and Circulation modules will not transfer to the new client. Each
operator will need to set these again, once they have logged on using Voyager Gold.
Problems with client download, installation, or configuration should be
reported to the ILCSO Office.
