Welcome to
The Calgary Corporate Blood Donor Challenge 2011
The Canadian Blood Services’ Blood Donor Challenge is a great way for
all your employees, friends and family members to get involved in the
games, earn points and save lives!
We want to thank you for your commitment and support. The blood you
donate will bring life and hope to hospital patients – possibly a cancer
patient, a premature baby, someone with a blood disorder or someone
who has suffered a serious trauma.
Special messages from blood recipients
“I’m so grateful to blood donors and I want them to know that they don’t only impact the
recipients of blood products – they also impact the lives of friends and family members. In
my case, that donor made it possible for me to be a mom again.
Tiffany – Recipient
“ You’ll never meet any of the people whose lives that you save, but you’ll know they’re out
there, and what better feeling can there possibly be than to know that you are actively
involved in saving lives?” Paul – Recipient
“Thank you for saving my life!” Russ – Recipient
Your donations and time are a wonderful gift for a future recipient,
thank you.
Please make sure that all donors sign the Calgary Corporate Challenge
binder at the clinic!

Platelets are often used to help patients with diseases such as cancer and bleeding disorders. These
patients usually need large quantities of platelets as part of their treatment. Platelets are small cell
fragments essential in creating blood clots. These fragile cells must be used within 5 days of collection
so the demand is constant. Specializing your donation by donating platelets means that you can give in

Plateletpheresis is a process that allows the collection of platelets from a donor. When you donate
platelets your blood is collected and separated into components via automation. The platelets are
retained and the remaining blood components are returned to your body. A platelet donation takes
approximately 90-100 minutes from registration to refreshment.

Earning Credits
Win In Your Division
Start early – the winning teams usually have their appointments booked a few
months in advance.
Take advantage of extra credits.
Make sure every donation counts – remind donors to sign the Challenge binder.
Set a company goal based on your past year’s results or check out the list of
participants and decide who you want to beat.
Donate Plasma once a week or Platelets every two weeks. Ask about Large
Volume Platelets to earn DOUBLE POINTS
Corporate Challenge Points
Every team which participates in the Calgary Corporate Blood Donor Challenge
will be awarded 2 points for signing up. These points will go towards your overall
score for the entire games.
The top six teams in each division (who earn the most credits) will be awarded
points towards the Calgary Corporate Challenge Games (as per the Calgary
Corporate Challenge scoring rules).
Earning Credits
Each blood, plasma or platelet donor will be awarded one credit toward their team’s
score. Whole blood donors are eligible to donate every 56 days.
A half credit will be awarded to donors who attend a clinic but are not able to donate
that day (as a result of a deferral).
Participants from the company, family and friends should sign the Challenge binder.
Who Can Donate For Your Team
We encourage everyone who meets the eligibility criteria to donate. However, if you
know you aren’t eligible to donate, please do not take a life saving appointment space
away from someone who may be eligible.
Staff, family, friends, suppliers and other contacts can donate on behalf of your team.
When at the clinic, please do not solicit donors who are not connected to your team to
sign the binder on your behalf.
Please make sure that all donors sign the Calgary Corporate Challenge
binder at the clinic!

Easy Ways to get Extra Credits
There’s a first time for everything:
One extra credit will be awarded to first time donors in whole blood, plasma
and platelets.
Saddle-up:
One extra credit will be awarded to all donors donating during Stampede
(July 8th – July 16th ).
Good things come in groups:
Ten extra credits will be awarded when your team books 3 group appointments
with at least 5 - 8 donors each time (extra credits will be withdrawn if
appointments are not honoured).
Turn up the frequency:
Remember, platelets can be donated every two weeks and plasma can be
donated every week! A great way to get extra credits.
Earn two credits for every large volume platelet donation. (*contact a CBS Rep
to find out more.)
Long weekend special:
Earn two credits for all donors attending long weekend clinics. Two credits are
awarded for donors who attend a clinic on the Friday, Saturday or Monday of
any long weekend. What to boost your points? Adopt a long weekend clinic
and fill it with donors from your company for a ‘jackpot’ of points. Contact us
to find out more!
Here’s a tip!
In order to ensure the maximum numbers of staff are eligible to donate, try
making your group appointments in sets of 3.
Because there is a 56 day wait period between donations, one person can make
a maximum of three whole blood donations if their first donation is made
between April 15th and May 20th, the second donation is made between May
21st and July 15thand third donation is made between July 16th and September
9th
In order to ensure the maximum numbers of staff are eligible to donate, try
making your group appointments in sets of 3. After May 20th you are eligible to
book again July 15th.

Donating Blood - A Safe Procedure
Donating blood does not put you at risk of disease. All needles are sterile, used only once and
discarded. You cannot give or get the flu through blood donation. The usual blood collection
(a “unit”) is about half a litre, or one pint. Your body soon replaces all the blood you donate.
9
The Donation Process
Bring your Donor Card or photo ID to our Donor Services Representative (DSR)
who greets you at the front end of the clinic. The DSR will check you in, give you
a number, an appointment reminder card and some important information to
read.
Once you are checked in, we call your number and your iron level is tested by one
of our Clinic Assistants.
Then, in a privacy booth, you complete a questionnaire to determine your
eligibility. Place your appointment reminder card in the holder provided to make
sure you are called in turn.
A nurse calls your name and in a private and confidential setting, the nurse asks a
number of questions to ensure you are eligible.
Your blood pressure and temperature are measured.
You rest on a bed and the blood donation begins. The actual donation usually only
takes about 5 or 10 minutes. The better hydrated you are, the more quickly the
donation will go.
When you’ve finished donating you will stay on the bed for about 5 minutes.
Your body soon replaces all the blood you donate. Each donation is
approximately 455 ml of blood; only about 1/10 of your blood volume.
Each donation is sent to our lab to be tested and split into different components:
plasma, platelets and red blood cells. Each component can be used to help a
different person depending on their need.
After the donation you will rest and enjoy some refreshments.
You leave the clinic with your colleagues feeling great and knowing that you have
just helped to save or improve 3 lives!
Please make sure that all donors sign the Calgary Corporate Challenge
binder at the clinic!
