1. Twice the difference of number and 8 is equal to three times the sum of the number and three.

Find the number.



2. A wedding gift of $15,000 is divided so that the wife ends up spending twice as much as the

husband. How much does each person spend?



3. A wire is 40 inches long. It is cut into three pieces in such a way that the second piece is three

times the length of the first piece and the third piece is 5 longer than the first piece. Find the

length of each piece.



4. One more than 5 times a number is the same as 11 less than 9 times the number. Find the number.



5. A piece of wire that is 480 meters long is cut into three pieces. The second piece is 3 times as long

as the first. The third is 4 times as long as the second. How long is each piece?



6. The 1977 Super Bowl was played in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. In that football game, the Oakland

Raiders scored 18 points more than the Minnesota Vikings. If the total number of points scored

was 46, what was the final score of the game?

7. A 20-ft pipe has been cut into two pieces. One piece is 3 times as long as the second piece. How

long is each section?



8. John made a robotic arm for the science fair. The arm, which is divided into three parts, will

extend a total distance of 18 feet. The second piece is 4 feet longer that the first piece. The

third piece is 5 feet less than the second piece. Find the length of each section.



9. An up-and-coming rock group plans to tour 3 different countries in North America for a total of 38

weeks. They will be in the U.S. for 4 weeks more than they will be in Canada. Their stay in Mexico

will be two weeks less than their stay in Canada. How many weeks will they spend in each country?



10. The calories in a slice of pie are 100 more than twice the calories in a scoop of ice cream. Together

the pie and ice cream account for 850 calories. How many calories in the ice cream? How many

calories in the pie?







11. Jenny, Donna and Sally bought an 18-inch sandwich at Subway to share. Since they have different

appetites, they cut the sandwich so that Donna gets half of what Jenny gets. Sally gets of what

Jenny gets. Find the length of each girl’s share.







12. A 240-in. pipe is cut into two pieces. One piece is 3 times the length of the other. Find the length

of each piece.
