What Not To Wear On A Job Interview Source: CAMREPORT Facts & Trends,
December 15, 2011
You’ve probably heard the expression “you never get a second chance to make a first
impression,” and that adage is never more important when it comes to interviewing for a job.
While your communication skills and educational achievements will be key components of the
interview package, it is important to remember the third tool for success in the job interview –
your appearance. Like it or not, how you look will affect your potential employer’s perception
of your competence and ability and, ultimately, your chances of being hired. Here are some
suggestions for avoiding a fashion faux pas during the interview.
Wear Clean Pressed Clothing.
Going to a job interview with wrinkled clothing, unpolished shoes, a shirt with a frayed collar,
etc. tells the employer that u are not taking the interview or job seriously. If you appear slovenly
at the interview, what can the employer expect from you if you are hired?
Avoid Showing Skin.
Showing too much skin is inappropriate in any interview. Wear clothing that covers your body
appropriately, Save your more revealing outfits for casual time with friends.
Tone Down the Jewelry.
Avoid wearing excessively large earrings or other jewelry. You want the attention to be on you
not your jewelry.
Tone Down the Piercings.
Pierced ears are standard for women these days, but more than a single piercing in each ear
should be avoided (unless, perhaps, you bare applying to a creative employer). Lip, eyebrow,
and nose piercing should be generally avoided. Men should probably skip all piercings unless
they are planning to work in a creative industry.
Cover Tatoos.
Some companies may find your tattoos offensive or distracting. If you can, cover your tattoos in
order to focus the attention on you, not the artwork on your arm.
Don’t Dress Too conservatively.
You don’t want to look too dated or boring.
Pay Attention to Company Culture.
Know the dress code before you interview.
