WHAT IS DIRT LATE MODEL RACING?
The history of dirt Late Model racing can be traced back to the origins of the automobile
and competitive auto racing itself. However, what is viewed in today’s terms of a “dirt
Late Model” has grown, flourished and evolved substantially over the decades. Today,
the evolution of dirt Late Model racing as it has become today began to form around
1965 when technology in the sport had its birth.
By 1967 this particular form of motorsports had begun to attract more and more
competitors and race fans which then resulted in higher paying, higher-profile racing
events. By 1971 promoter Earl Baltes produced his first WORLD 100 dirt Late Model
race that paid the winner the then-unheard of sum of $4,000 to win. Today, the race
has become commonly known as the “granddaddy of all dirt Late Model races” and
annually attracts in excess of 200 race teams and over 30,000 race fans. In 2006 the
WORLD 100 paid winner Earl Pearson, Jr., of Florida $38,000.
Since 1971 several sanctioning groups have formed and produce high-profile major
racing events all across the United States in front of full grandstands with race teams
utilizing state-of-the-art equipment. Today’s ultra-modern dirt Late Models are “factory”
produced and can cost a team nearly $100,000 to assemble a car, motor and other
necessary equipment.
Since the 1960’s, when dirt Late Model racing usually paid $200-400 to win a main
event, today it is not unusual to attend sanctioned races that pay $15,000, $20,000,
$30,000, $50,000 and $100,000 to win. In 2001 there was even a MILLION DOLLAR TO
WIN dirt Late Model race at Eldora Speedway.
Today dirt Late Model racing, in the world of short track racing, holds an esteemed
position in terms of teams that compete, racetrack facilities that host the events and
the untold thousands of race fans that attend weekly. It is now televised on television
and has a major presence in every major auto racing trade publication as well as some
mainstream outlets.
Dirt Late Model racing has grown and expanded on such a broad base that even
internationally known NASCAR Winston Cup drivers compete occasionally in dirt Late
Model events across the country, so exciting, competitive and accepted has the sport
become.

Clint Coffman Aims At Title
By Doc Lehman
With the 2006 season upon us Ohio-based dirt Late Model driver Clint Coffman has started his 18th season as a
driver. With an early season trip to Florida to race with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, Coffman is now primed
and ready to tackle his home track, Wayne County Speedway and shoot for the championship in his Barry Wright
Race Cars/Malcuit Racing Engines #2c.
A number of years ago Coffman relocated to Florida and raced in the southeast until deciding to return to WCS and
for several years flew from Florida to Ohio each weekend to race. After returning to Ohio to reside and relocate the
family business, Coffman Corvette with his father, Ernie Coffman, the friendly driver is not only racing his sleek
black #2c but is now also helping the family operate Wayne County Speedway. The Coffman’s purchased WCS
three years ago.
“Plans for this year is Wayne County Speedway for the season and take a shot at the championship and win some
races,” stated Coffman, a husband and father of two sons. “It would mean a ton to win that championship. There
are guys like Blaine Aber, Jim Gentry, Ryan Markham who have won championships there and to win that would
make you part of the elite.”
Coffman utilizes one of the few Barry Wright Race Car chassis in north central Ohio but he wouldn’t have it any
other way. “I think Barry’s stuff is the best on the market,” commented Coffman. “The craftsmanship is second to
none and Barry is a great guy to work with. The cars are safe. I tested it out when I got upside down in Florida and
they are the best.”
“I think I’ve been with Barry since 1998. I like Barry, he is really good to work with, an excellent guy and you can
talk to him. And I think he builds the nicest car, workmanship wise. A good guy and I get feedback from him all the
time. I talk to him often.”
“We run a Malcuit engine and I like them. Brad (Malcuit) is a good guy. Brad also helps a lot especially down in
Florida; he checked the motor and the car.” Coffman will be running a Mopar engine this season out of the Malcuit
shop.
Another thing Coffman is looking forward to is the competition at WCS. “I think they are the best guys in the area,”
said Coffman. “You’ve got 35-40 Late Models there and I’d say all of them can win. When you go there on Saturday
night with the first reason being just to make the feature. One mistake and your in the B Main and maybe not
making the feature.”
In addition to his duties at Coffman Corvette and keeping his race team going Coffman also assists his father at
WCS during the week in addition to being called upon on race nights. “Whatever needs done, whatever we have to
do to get the show on Saturday night,” explained Coffman. “From helping Tim (Myers) run the water truck or
running the grader, whatever it is. Cooking hamburgers, hot dogs, whatever needs done.”
And as far as Coffman is concerned, the main thing to get done is win some races and perhaps take a run at the
title. Regardless, Coffman will be in attendance each and every night at WCS trying to make that very thing
happen.
