Building parent involvement is the single most important thing that parent
groups do. Often, it’s the most difficult too. And that’s too bad because there
are many compelling reasons why all parents should get involved in their
children’s education. Researchers have been studying the effects parent
attitudes and actions have on their children’s academic success for more than 30
years. Research shows that when parents are involved in their child’s education,
the children are more likely to:

RECYCLING
Do you recycle? If not, you can start. The school is recycling ink cartridges and old cell phones.
Why does the school recycle? Recycling does a lot more than people think. Recycling is just reusing something.
For example, if you drink a coke then take the can to a recycling place, they would wash it, crush it, and reshape
it into something else. What makes it even better is that it helps the environment. It reduces the amount of
wastes in landfills. It also saves money. You don’t just have to recycle your ink cartridges; you can recycle cans
and bottles, just to name a few. Just think how much we could save and how much we could help the
environment by recycling, and it doesn’t take that much effort. I hope you will start recycling by donating all ink
cartridges and old cell phones to our school. ~Danielle C.
GRANDPARENT’S DAY
On September 10, 2010 our Pre-K celebrated Grandparents Day. Grandparents Day has a three hold
purpose: to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s
children, and to help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people
can offer. By celebrating Grandparents Day, they decided to sing three songs for their grandparents and
sing one with them. Then they played a few games together. The songs they sang were “Tarzan”, “Five
Little Monkeys”, and “Tooty-Ta”. They sang “Tooty-Ta” again with their grandparents. They played the
Guess Who game together. They had a lot of fun this day honoring their grandparents.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR
The Starks High School Teacher of the Year has been chosen. To be chosen for teacher of the year, a
candidate should hold full state certification and be a classroom teacher. The faculty has chosen Jeremy
Carlile. He has taught middle school math for five years and English I for two years. Before Mr. Carlile
became a teacher he worked for a company that made cartoons. He graduated from McNeese State THREE
times. Mr. Carlile has many hobbies. He enjoys reading, exercising, and getting into adventures with his
daughter. Most of you know he as an unnatural love for COFFEE! Of course like most adults, he wishes that
kids would put down the cell phones and video games and pick up a book. He isn’t against video games, TV,
the internet, cell phones, etc.., but fears that these electronic conveniences have robbed children of their
imaginations, creativity, and sense of wonder. Mr. Carlile has been teaching here at SHS for five years.
Congratulations Mr. Carlile. It is a great honor to have you represent our school as Teacher of the Year
2010-2011. ~Kyra B.
MATHEMATICS EXEMPLAR
In our efforts to improve mathematical problem-solving and communication skills, teachers at Starks High
School have integrated Exemplars Math performance tasks into the curriculum. Each month, a sample
problem (including the solution) will be included in the school newsletter. This month we invite you to
explore a kindergarten problem.
CAR WASH
Amy’s school was having a car wash to raise money to buy a new computer.
When a car came to be washed Amy was in charge of washing the wheels.
Amy washed 20 wheels. How many cars did Amy help wash?
MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH
The 7th grade ELA students are starting their research on
Westward Expansion. Guest Jim Karr and Hershel Frazier were
here to share stories with them on Tuesday, September 14 th. The
students are excited about researching outlaws. As part of math
and social studies integration, they have worked to plan a wagon
tip to California. They had to figure the amount of supplies and
costs, and how long it would take to save the money. All income
and expenses are based on prices from the 1800s. Students have
been amazed at the prices of items back then.
The 8th grade ELA students have researched a person on whom to
write a biography. They will type their biography and use the Holt
Online Essay Grader to receive feedback on their essays. After
this, they will have to write a multi chapter autobiography. They
have been busy in middle school English classes!
