ASK The Old Guard Riders
GYPSY Poker Run for Vets
Back on April 23rd the weather was perfect for the Old Guard Riders “Poker run for Vet’s”, kick stands were up almost
right on time as the group pulled out of the Maverick headed towards VFW Post 1433. After that it would be on to Char-
ley’s Place, the T-Bird Road House and when turn the motorcycles back towards the Maverick for the end party.
The Maverick Bar hosted both the sign in and the after run party, and what a party they hosted. There was plenty of

maintainence. So will the Keihan carb the ‘94 came with. Both will get you
about 38 to 40 mpg and are equally likely to pass emissions tests if properly
tweaked. So what do YOU prefer? The carb is a mechanical device, every
part on it is subject to wear and can be replaced, usually on the side of the
road while you enjoy the scenery. Fuel injection, on the other hand, is me-
chanical devices controlled by electronics. When they go “south” you call for
a tow. Carbs are simple devices; dont be afraid to learn new things. ‘Course if
you’re not the “hands on” type, fuel injection is the way to go. Which ever you
choose, get a service manual.
Gypsy
Dear Gypsy
I just brought home my first motorcycle, an ‘06 FLST. One of my girl friends
gave me a little silver bell as a gift and told me to “hang it on the bike to
chase off the Gremlins.” What is she talking about!?! Is she pulling my leg or
is this some obscure piece of “biker” folk lore?
Biker Barbie
Barbie,
When I first started riding, a lot of the guys had little brass bells they got from
hippies or head shops. Most times they hung ‘em on their scooter in a hidden
location to act as an “alarm system” when they nodded out at a party or run,
theory being the noise would wake ‘em when someone tried to push their
bike. Some time later, someone began selling similar bells and the story of
gremlins was tossed about. What it means today is someone likes you and
wishes you well, so hang your bell & tinkle.

A couple of months ago I mentioned some modifications we were doing to
the Demented Elf’s ‘07 XL 1200. We installed a set of Paughco’s new drag
pipes for fuel injected Sportys and an Arlen Ness “Big Sucker” air cleaner
AND since D.E.’s scoot is injected, a device called “O2 enrichenment device”
from Namz Cycle. A couple hundred miles later I’m able to report her bike

no power any where in the rpm band. She’s happy, we were treated like
kings by Custom Chrome & their local rep, Mike Score & I’m looking for
louder pipes so I can hear MY scoot. The “enrichenment device” cost about

Red & White Boxing Night Barmaid Of The Month
Bye far, my favorite event this month was on May 1 when the Nomads held a
boxing match at Kid Chilleens Bad Ass BBQ. Busted Knuckle Boxing in Phoenix
brought some tuff boys to punch it out for our entertainment. The fights were
amazing, but what I loved best was that Mike from the Nomads picked up a
group of military veterans and brought them to the show! This had to be one of
the most amazing days for these guys, because it is the same day that Osama
Bin Laden was killed by one of our elite Seal Teams.
The event was great, from the live band, Return to Custody, to some of the best
BBQ in Arizona. There was something for everyone including bikes, boxing and
sexy girls. What’s not to love! This is exactly what being a free American is all
about! Thank you to all who put on the event.

SEEKING JUSTICE FOR A FRIEND
A friend of mine was killed on his motorcycle in Tucson, Thursday, April 21st 2011. He was wearing a full
face helmet, wasn’t speeding or high on drugs or alcohol. He was just riding. According to the newspaper,
a 62-year-old woman saw the light was about to turn & not willing to wait for the next one; she turned in
front of my friend. He didn’t stand a chance.
He was thrown through her windshield & came up through the sunroof. Now think about that for a minute.
This man was over 6ft. tall & he came up through her sunroof. He was hit so hard that his full face helmet
was ripped from his head. The police found it about 300 ft. from the scene of the accident. She was sent
to the hospital with ‘minor non-life threatening injuries.’ He was sent to the morgue in a bag.
How many motorcyclists are killed every year in the state of Arizona? According to the statistics I was able
to get from ADOT (Arizona Department of Transportation), there were 155,722 motorcycles registered in
our state in 2009 (latest year available). Also, according to ADOT, there were 122 motorcycle fatalities that
year.
In a state with so many days of sunshine and good riding weather, as well as our state being known for its
appeal to “Snow-birds”, it is inevitable that cars and bikes are going to interact. Sadly of the 1617 motor-
cycle/vehicle crashes reported to ADOT in 2009, there were 57 motorcyclist fatalities. Helmet used or not,
doesn’t really seem to change the statistics much either. Of the accidents reported, where a helmet was
used, 3.35% of the riders died. With no helmet used, 6.93% of riders died.
According to Margie F. President of ABATE of Arizona, “There are 4 Motorcycle Rights Organizations in
this state that are trying to make people on the roads be more aware of motorcycles by putting up bill-
boards & ‘Look Twice For Motorcycles’ signs on the roads throughout our state, running Public Service
Announcements, holding motorcycle awareness classes at some of the local schools, & more. “What we
really need is for drivers to pay more attention. Stay off their cell phones; stop texting while driving or doing
anything that distracts from driving & look twice before changing lanes or turning left. People just have to
remember that motorcycles deserve the same respect on the roads as any other vehicle & to pay attention
to them (motorcycles) when driving. When you hit another car your get a dent, when you hit a motorcycle
you could easily take a life”. Hopefully ABATE will be successful in their efforts, but they need everyone’s
help with this uphill battle.
ABATE (American Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education) is pushing for stricter laws for the motorists who
kill bikers, but it’s a slow process. Some police and sheriffs departments still treat us (bikers), as second
class citizens, not worthy of full justice. This HAS to change.
Oh, and by the way? The woman who hit my friend? She was given a ticket for “failure to yield,” one point
against her driver’s license and not even ticketed for causing a vehicular fatality.
Post Script: In the week following the death of my friend, two other motorcyclists were hit by motorists.
My own husband was nearly hit by “a guy in a van who wasn’t looking.” Fortunately, no one was killed.
This time.
Rest in peace My Friend.
