Although many products are marketed as air purifiers, not all of them are created equal. In fact,

many so-called air purifiers actually generate ozone, a chemical that is fine when it's safely

contained within the Earth's atmosphere - but not so great when inhaled by human beings. In

order to be a savvy air purifier shopper, you need to be aware of the dangers of ozone, and how to

avoid inadvertently purchasing a purifier that actually compromises the indoor air quality of your

home instead of improving it. Learn more about ozone and problematic air purifiers by reading on

below.

What is Ozone?

Ozone is a special kind of molecule that is made out of three oxygen atoms. Most of us are

familiar with ozone due to the ozone layer, the special part of the Earth's atmosphere that helps

deflect harmful UV rays. Concerns about the depletion of the Earth's ozone layer have given it a

prominent place in the news for some time now - but there are even more pressing concerns when

it comes to this molecule. In fact, exposure to ozone and breathing high quantities of it can cause

a laundry list of health problems.

Why Ozone is Dangerous

Surprisingly, you don't even need to be exposed to exorbitant amounts of ozone in order to feel its

ill effects. Even in small doses, ozone can cause shortness of breath, coughing chest pains, and

an irritated throat. Some studies also suggest that ozone can exacerbate conditions like asthma,

and can make people more susceptible to coming down with various other illnesses. Without a

doubt, living a healthy lifestyle means avoiding ozone; it's shocking, then, to discover that many air

cleaners actually produce ozone as a byproduct, introducing it to the air in your home and

exposing you and your loved ones to it.

The Trouble with Some Air Purifiers

Several air purifiers that are on the market today are being protested by watch groups for

generating ozone as a byproduct. Ion generators are one of the most common examples of this

phenomenon. Ion generators create charged particles, which are called ions, and send them out

into the air in your home. Those charged ions then become attached to particles in the air,

weighing them down and making them fall. Instead of pulling them from the air, then, these

generators simply bog them down - they are still present in the home. All the while, ozone is being

created.

What Environmental Groups Have to Say

Several watch groups, including the California Resources Board, have released warnings about

ion and ozone generators. People who are shopping for air purifiers often get misled and purchase

one of those machines instead of one that actually cleans and purifies the air. In turn, their homes

are filled with ozone, which actually compromises the health of those who live there. Talk about

backfiring! Truth in advertising is imperative, and ion and ozone generators need to come clean

with the public about the harm they actually cause to those exposed to them.

How to Avoid Ozone Generators

Shopping for an air purifier can be confusing, what with the dizzying array of products that are on

the market today. The number one thing to keep in mind is to steer clear of any product that touts

itself as being an ion generator or an ozone generator. If the air purifier does not involve a filter of

any kind, or if it makes mention of either of those characteristics, then it will not improve the indoor

air quality of your home and you should not purchase it.

Buying a Truly Effective Air Purifier

The number one way to ensure that the air purifier you buy improves the indoor air quality of your

home is by purchasing a HEPA air purifier. Genuine HEPA technology can pull up to 99.97% of

impurities from the air. Airborne particulates as small as.03 microns in size can be pulled from the

air in your home by a HEPA air purifier, ensuring that your family's health is protected.
