1982 – 2002: TWO DECADES OF MEMORIES
D
ramatic and rapid change. That’s the best way to describe the twenty years since we “walked” for
graduation in June 1982. This year’s senior class had yet to be born. We learned to type on
electric typewriters. Computers were the things that made Asteroids work. The Soviet Union was
entrenched in Afghanistan. The Ayatollah Khomeni was leading Iran’s fundamentalist revolution and giving
President Jimmy Carter fits. We got “The Knack,” went to “The Wall” with Pink Floyd and jammed to The
Ramones. (Well, at least Sweet did.)
Since then we’ve seen: Personal computers move from the desktop to the laptop to the palmtop. The fall of
the USSR, the USFL and the XFL, the Berlin Wall, and Apartheid. Three Olympic Games on American soil
(Los Angeles 1984, Atlanta 1996, Salt Lake City 2002). Lech Walesa’s Solidarity and the Iranian Hostage
Crisis. Reaganomics. Ivan Boesky and the glamorization of greed. Donald Trump and the Art of the Deal.
Bhopal and Chernobyl. Junk bonds and the S&L scandal. AIDS. Gorbachev. Black Monday. Yasir Arafat.
The Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars). Oliver North. Tiananmen Square, Desert Storm, and
Perestroika.
We’ve heard George Sr. ask us to “Read my lips,” Ross Perot tell us he’s “all ears,” and Bill Clinton swear
he “didn’t inhale.”
We’ve watched Stormin’ Norman Swartzkopf vs. Saddam Hussein. Holyfield vs. Tyson. Somalia. Ethiopia.
Kosovo. Tammy Faye Baker. Ethnic Cleansing. Oklahoma City. O.J. Simpson. Monica Lewinsky. Princess
