James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His
families moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There a schoolteacher asked the youth his name.
“J.C.” he replied. She thought he had said “Jesse”, and he had a new name.
Owens ran his first race at the age of 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State
University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second-year student,
in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a
year later.
A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back
hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car
that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he
would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book.
The stage was set for Owens’ victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his
success would come to be regarded as not only athletic (运动的) but also political. Hitler did not
congratulate any of the African—American winners.
“It was all right with me,” he said years later. “I didn’t go to Berlin to shake hands with him,
anyway.”
Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone call from the President of his own
country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his
death.
Owens’ Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking
after a school playground and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles, and
dogs.
“Sure, it bothered me,” he said later. But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.”
In time, however, his gold medals changed his life. “They have kept me alive over the
years,” he once said. “Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard.”
58. Owens got his other name “Jesse” when his teacher took “J.C.” for “Jesse”
59.In the Big Ten meet, Owens hurt himself in the back
60..We can infer from the text that Owens was treated unfairly in the U.S. at that time because
he was the son of a poor farmer
61.The underlined sentence means that the medals encouraged him to overcome difficulties in
     life
62.Owens’Olympic victories made little difference to him.

The best way to help your children do well in school is to show them that you care about
their education and lives. Here’s some helpful advice.
You are your children’s first and most important teacher.
You know your children better than anyone else, and you probably care about them more
than anything. Get involved in their education at every step — from homework help to
parent-teacher conferences.
A close relationship with your children can keep them from having problems in school.
Children need help to make decisions about school, relationships, work, and so on. This can be
easier if your children can talk to you about their problems.
Be a good listener.
Young children want to talk about their school days, so take time to talk and listen every
day. As children get older, especially during high school, they might not want to talk to their
parents. They usually think their friends may understand them better. At this time, parents should
be patient and think of ways to get involved in your children’s lives. You need to be a
cheerleader (啦啦队队长) for your children. Tell your children you’re proud if they deserve it.
Offer your personal support.
Help your children practice multiplication tables (乘法表) or have them read you one of
their essays. If your children are having trouble in school, offer to help them get through it.
In a word, having an honest and positive relationship with your children will help them succeed
in school. Even if you didn’t have the best experience in school, you can still help your
children be successful. Besides, parents should know some effective ways of creating a great
homework space.
63. Why are children unwilling to talk to their parents when they grow older?
    A. Because their parents are too busy to listen.
    B. Because their parents don’t want to get involved in their lives.
    C. Because they don’t think their parents can understand them better.
    D. Because they are too shy to speak out their secrets.
64. What does the underlined sentence mean?
    A. Parents should never hurt their children’s feelings.
    B. Parents should encourage children when they make a real effort.
    C. Parents should never point out their children’s mistakes.
    D. Parents should always be on their children’s side no matter what happens.
65. The passage suggests that parents should be ________ in helping children do well in school.
    A. positive B. critical C. indifferent D. well-educated
66. What would be talked about in the following paragraph?
    A. How to be your children’s best teacher.
    B. How to improve yourself to give your children more help.

                                                7
   C. How to communicate with your children.
   D. How to make a good homework space for your children.

                                                   D
Nearly everyone is shy in some ways. If shyness is making you uncomfortable, it may be
time for a few lessons in self-confidence. You can build your confidence by following some
suggestions from doctors and psychologists.
Make a decision not to hold back in conversations. What you have to say is just as
important as what other people say. And don’t turn down party invitations just because of your
shyness.
Prepare for yourself for being with others in groups. Make a list of the good qualities you
have.
Then make a list of ideas, experiences, and skills you would like to share with other people . I
think about what you would like to say in advance. Then say it.
If you start feeling self-conscious in a group, take a deep breath and focus your attention on
other people, Remember, you are not alone. Other people are concerned about the impression
they are making, too.
No one ever gets over being shy completely, but most people do learn to live with their
shyness. Even entertainers admit that they often feel shy. They work at fighting their shy feelings
so that they can face the cameras and the public. Just making the effort to control shyness can
have many rewards. But perhaps the best reason to fight shyness is to give other people a chance
to know about you.
