Japan has experienced almost two lost decades, much to its own frustration as well as that of its
economic and political partners. What are the sources of these frustrations and how can they be
explained? What concerns do they pose? What are the opportunities that Japan presents? Why is
engagement with Japan more important than ever before? Thierry Porté is an Operating Partner of
J.C. Flowers & Co., LLC, a private equity firm, Chief Executive Officer of NPG Wealth Management, a
Luxembourg-based insurance group, and Chairman and non-Executive Director of Equita, a Milan-
based investment bank. He was previously Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Shinsei Bank Limited, Tokyo. Mr. Porté has also served in various capacities at Morgan Stanley in
New York, London and Tokyo, including President and Branch Manager of Morgan Stanley Japan. In
2009, he was a Research Associate in the Program on US-Japan Relations at the Weatherhead Hong Kong
Center and the Reischauer Institute at Harvard University. Mr. Porté is Chairman of the Japan-US Center
Friendship Commission and the US-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange. He
first moved to Japan in 1983 and resided in Japan for more than 17 years. Mr. Porté received his 13/F Baskerville House
