Seminar on “Learning from the UK experience: the use of mediation in commercial
disputes” by Mr Stephen Ruttle QC and Mr Michel Kallipetis QC

Mr Ruttle was accredited by CEDR in 1998 and now spends almost all his time acting as a
mediator. He has mediated over 300 disputes involving sums in dispute up to Pounds 200
million. He has conducted mediations involving insurance and reinsurance, shipping,
professional negligence, pensions, IT, banking, financial services, construction, IP and general
commercial disputes.

Mr Kallipetis is an Accredited Mediator with CEDR and ADR Chambers, and is a Chartered
Arbitrator. He is also Chairman of the Bar Council ADR Committee, and was a member of the
working party which drafted the EU Code of Practice for Mediators. Mr Kallipetis regularly
mediates civil and commercial disputes. He has mediated claims for several hundred million
pounds.

Both Mr Kallipetis and Mr Ruttle QC have been invited to Hong Kong for the Judicial Studies
Board mediation training programme primarily aimed at giving Hong Kong judges and judicial
officers an understanding of mediation in the context of legal proceedings. They have agreed to
speak to members of the HKMC during their forthcoming visit later this month.

3.00-4.00pm       “Learning from the UK experience: the use of mediation in commercial
                  disputes” - Talk by Michel Kallipetis QC and Stephen Ruttle QC
4.00-4.30pm       Recent mediation developments in Hong Kong – Group discussion with
                  HKMC Council Members
