Welcome to The Pentagon - Orientation and Guide

The original site selected was a tract of land known as Arlington Farms,
situated between Arlington Cemetery and Memorial Bridge. The site was
bordered by five roadways, thus dictating the concept of a pentagonal-
shaped building. Fearing that the enormous building would obstruct the
view of Washington, DC, from Arlington Cemetery, President Franklin
Delano Roosevelt directed that the building be moved three quarters
of a mile down-river. The new location chosen was at the site of the
old Hoover Airport, a brick factory, a pickle factory, a race track, and a
low-income residential area known as Hell’s Bottom. On this site, the
final design concept of an open air court surrounded by five concentric
pentagonal rings, traversed by 10 spoke-like corridors, was executed.

The architectural style of the Pentagon is termed “stripped classical.”
This style carried forward the early 20th century interest in classical
design, thought to be an ideal vehicle for expressing the dignity of
democratic institutions. However, the classicism was tempered by a
decorative austerity characteristic of the “Modern” style, found all over
the world during the 1920s and 1930s. “Stripped classical” brought the
Pentagon into symbolic relationship with other government structures
Scale model of the Pentagon Reservation
in Washington’s Monumental Core, including the Department of the
Interior Building and the Federal Reserve Building, constructed at about
the same time and along similar principles. The Pentagon was listed on
the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and was designated a
    National Historic Landmark in 1992.

At the height of construction, more than 1,000 architects worked
in an adjacent hangar, producing enough prints to supply the
14,000 construction workers and tradesmen who worked at the
site daily. Three shifts worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
constructing the Pentagon wedge by wedge. The wedges were
    occupied as they were completed.

The Pentagon encircles a five-acre central courtyard and has 17 1/2
miles of corridors. It is said that, in spite of its size, it takes just seven
minutes to walk between any two points in the building—assuming that
                                                                                     The Pentagon’s “stripped classical” style

HOW TO FIND A ROOM IN THE PENTAGON

If you need to travel any distance inside the building,
one of the best ways to move around is to walk
to the A ring, continue walking on the A ring until
you find the corridor you need, then walk on that
corridor, crossing the other rings, until you reach
the ring that you need. Otherwise, for example, if
14 you try to circle around the building on the E ring
to get to your location, you will be walking the long
way around, since the outer E ring is the longest
walking distance. Weather permitting, you can also
cut across the central courtyard to decrease the
     walking distance.

For example, Room 3A736 means that the location
is on the third floor, on the A ring, near the seventh
corridor, room number 736. The address BE834
means that the location is in the basement, on the
E ring, near the eighth corridor, Room number 834.
Room numbers can be interpreted as follows:

l The first number or letter indicates the
floor on which the room is located (B =
             Basement, M = Mezzanine, 1-5 = floors).
l The next letter is the ring on which the
room is located. The main rings of the
building are designated A,B,C,D, and E.
l The next digit(s) indicate the corridor on
which the room is located. (Corridors are
             designated 1-10.)
l The last two digits indicate the specific
bay or room number assigned to an
             office.

 PENTAGON RENOVATION

Prior to the renovation of Wedge 1 (Corridors
3 and 4), beginning in 2001, the Pentagon had
not undergone a major renovation since its
construction in World War II. After more than
60 years of operation and use, renovation
was essential in order to meet current health,
fire, and safety codes, and to provide reliable 15
electrical, air-conditioning, and ventilating
services. The passage of time and the
cumulative effect of decades of deferred
maintenance had left this historic structure in an
advanced state of deterioration. The extent of
the decay, in the context of steadily increasing
operations and maintenance costs, mandated a
total slab-to-slab renovation.

The Pentagon Renovation and Construction
Program Office (PENREN) supports the
Secretary of Defense, departmental leadership,
and other customers in accomplishing its core
mission: to provide the Pentagon Reservation
with safe, secure, and high-performing
facilities and information technology through
renovation, construction, and modernization.
The renovation has also improved accessibility
throughout, notably for people with mobility
impairments, by the inclusion of more elevators
and the addition of escalators. Under the
program, exterior historic elements are being
preserved, food-service facilities upgraded,
and modern telecommunications-support
features installed.

The new Child Development Center (CDC) opened at Fort Myer on July
15, 2008. The services of the 50,831 square foot facility are available
to those who work at the Pentagon, Fort Myer, Fort McNair, and other
Military District of Washington facilities, as well as at Henderson Hall, a
Marine Corps facility.

The new CDC can accommodate 438 children: 348 children ages six
weeks to five years old, and 90 children ages six to twelve. The CDC
space is shared with the Child and Youth Services and the Youth and
School Age Services programs, making it more convenient for DoD
personnel and their children. The center has activity rooms, computer
labs, a multi-purpose room, a kitchen, laundry space, and outdoor
activity space. In addition to being the largest CDC that the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers has built to date, the facility serves as a model for
66 others planned to open in the next few years.

    The Air Force Memorial
Dedicated on October 14, 2006, the Air Force Memorial honors the
millions of men and women who have served in the U.S. Air Force and its
predecessor heritage organizations, including the Aeronautical Division,
U.S. Signal Corps; the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps; the Division
of Military Aeronautics, Secretary of War; the Army Air Service; the U.S.
Army Air Corps; and the U.S. Army Air Forces. More than 54,000 have
died in combat while serving in the Air Force and these historic service
    arms of the military.

The memorial is situated in Arlington, adjacent to Arlington Cemetery and
overlooking the Pentagon, the Potomac River, and Washington, DC. It is
within walking distance of the Pentagon Metro Station.

The Memorial design, both bold and graceful, is intended to evoke flight
and the flying spirit. Central to the design are three stainless steel spires
that soar skyward, with the highest reaching 270’ above the 3-acre
elevated promontory site. These spires are meant to express the strength
of the Air Force, which rests on the contributions of many specialist
functional areas which come together to create aerospace power. The
number “three” resonates with significant associations for the Air Force,
including the three values it holds highest: “Integrity first, Service before
self, and Excellence in all we do.” 57

Other key elements of the memorial include an ever-present bronze
Honor Guard, an Air Force Heritage/Core Value inscription wall, a
Courage/ Sacrifice/ Valor inscription wall, and the Missing Man Formation
glass contemplation wall, all landscaped to create a memorial lawn and
parade ground overlooking the nation’s capital. The memorial is open April 1–September 30, 0800-

           INSIDE THE BUILDING
The following memorials are located inside the Pentagon building. They can only be seen by Pentagon personnel who have badges or by
members of the public on tour or with an escort.

         The America’s Heroes Memorial
As a result of the 9/11 attack, all five floors of the three outer
rings (E, D, and C) of the Pentagon in the vicinity of the
aircraft’s impact, between Corridor 4 and 5, required complete
structural demolition down to slab-on-grade. The America’s
Heroes Memorial opened in September 2002 after repairs to
the Pentagon were complete. Located in the vicinity of 1E438,
the memorial pinpoints the location where American Airlines
Flight 77 crashed into the building.

The memorial includes a book of photographs and biographies
of the victims. It also includes five large black acrylic panels,
which honor the 184 victims of the crash. One panel displays
the Purple Heart medal awarded to military members killed
in the attacks; another shows the medal given to civilians.
Two back-wall panels are etched with the victims’ names,
and a center panel bears tribute statements. Pencils and
58 commemorative tracing paper are available, so that visitors
can make rubbings of the names.

A small chapel in an adjacent room (1E438), has stained glass
         windows with patriotic designs.

The memorial and chapel are open 24 hours a day,
7 days a week. For a virtual tour, please see

    The Navy Reflection Room
The space selected for the Navy Reflection Room (1D463) was
formerly the site of the Navy Operations Center, destroyed during
the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon. It was felt to be appropriate to
construct a small memorial for the members of the Navy who lost
their lives both at the Pentagon and on American Airlines Flight 77.
The memorial opened on September 11, 2003.

At the center of the room stands a large stone monolith, donated by
the Pentagon’s Renovation Program. On it are engraved the names
of the Navy family members being commemorated, with the header
“Lest We Forget.” An American flag stands at one side of the monolith
and a Navy Departmental flag stands at the other side.

Inscribed in the adjacent wall is an excerpt from World War I poet
Lawrence Binyon’s “For the Fallen.” Nearby is a limestone reflection
bench, made from stone, also donated by the Pentagon Renovation
    Program.
