HISTORY
of the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale
The Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale began as the joint inspiration of Coors Brewing Company and the
National Western Stock Show. Since 1993, Coors and the National Western have worked together to develop
what is now considered one of the finest western art exhibits in the United States. We give special credit to
Swede Johnson for his inspiration and enthusiastic encouragement of the show. Swede believed that an art
exhibit was a wonderful way to celebrate our western heritage and define the American West.
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
W elcome to the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale. We’re honored to share the work of the nation’s best
Western artists with you.
During your visit to our gallery, please enjoy the many expressions of Western painting, sculpture and
photography. From traditional to contemporary, the artists whose work you see are all representative of our
Western heritage — a lifestyle the National Western is committed to preserving.
Inspired by our non-profit and charitable purpose of providing educational opportunities, the National Western
commits to serving producers and consumers throughout the world by being the premier Stock Show, Rodeo,
Horse Show, and center for year-round events.
In addition to providing a distinctively cultural aspect to our show, the Coors Western Art Exhibit is a
significant contributor to the National Western Scholarship Trust, which provides scholarships to college
students in Colorado and Wyoming; and we are most grateful for the generous support of our sponsors —
MillerCoors, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, The Western Union Company — and our patrons, buyers
and dedicated volunteers.
All of this makes the Coors Western Art Exhibit a truly unique event. We hope you enjoy our show.

2010 FEATURED ARTIST
G. RUSSELL CASE
Western painter G. Russell Case is inspired by nature, but he places little value on
literal translations. His sweeping, idealized versions of the western landscape are
compositions that combine the beauty of the natural world with the rich imagination
and originality of an artist’s mind. While there is an unmistakable honesty present
in his painted environments — stemming from his engagement with the land
painted directly from nature — viewers may be reminded of other great artists of
the West, whose work is marked by distinctive artistic philosophies. Case’s work is
unfettered by philosophy and intellect, though he is surely a student of his artistic
forebears. The monumental scale of Maynard Dixon, or the unfiltered color and light of Thomas Moran both find
their way into his visual language. Yet Case’s work is simple, pure, and fresh; his painting draws in the viewer
and delivers timeless landscapes. We are immediately transported into a world created by shadow and light, of
immense vistas punctuated by jagged mountains and inhabited by lonesome cowboys. Although Russell Case was
undoubtedly stirred by the philosophies of the great artists and fueled by the freedom of painting from nature, this
artist maintains that his most profound inspiration came from those in his own life who bolstered his career and
remained faithful to his vision.
Born in the small town of Brigham City, Utah, Russell Case’s artistic enthusiasm was first fostered by his
father, Garry Case, who was also an artist. His father encouraged his artistic talents and helped him seek
exposure through marketing and local galleries. For fifteen years the younger Case translated his surroundings
into watercolor, creating a foundation for the liquid vibrancy found in his later oils. This transition developed
during his college years, where Case studied with the intent to become a professor of art. After graduating from
Utah State University in 1990 and with the support of his wife, Susanne, Case decided to dedicate himself to
painting full-time. It comes as little surprise that Case’s work eventually attracted the attention of collector Dr.
Mike Edson and his wife Karen. Case credits Edson as being a major factor in his success due to his attentive
monitoring of the young artist’s progress: his vigilant observation, unwavering support, and learned guidance
helped develop Case’s talent and channel his artistic energy.
Around the year 2000, fine art dealer Paul Bingham became acquainted with Case and developed into an
invaluable force in the success of the young artist’s career. Bingham, a dealer from San Jose who had purchased
the estate of Maynard Dixon, developed a friendship and partnership with Case and became his exclusive
representation. The dynamic partnership launched Case’s exposure to the national level, and he began getting
attention from collectors and dealers, including a very influential contact — gallery owner Jeff Mitchell in
Scottsdale, Arizona. With Mitchell’s help, Case gained even more exposure, attracting the notice of other galleries,
including the Gerald Peters Gallery.
Today, Russell Case’s work is represented in galleries including: Trailside Gallery in Jackson, WY; Michael Hollis
Fine Art & Antiques in South Pasadena, CA; David Ericson Fine Art in Salt Lake City, UT; Bingham Gallery in
Mt. Carmel, UT; Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe; and Mitchell Brown Fine Art in Scottsdale. Case has also won
numerous awards including Best of Show and First Place Oil Painting, Phippen Western Art Show in Prescott,
Arizona in 2001; First Place at Southwest Magazine Artist to Watch Show in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in
2002; and Best of Show, People’s Choice, and Artist’s Choice, Maynard Dixon Country, Mt. Carmel Junction, Utah
in 2003. Among the shows that Case has been invited to in the last few years are the Western Visions show in
Jackson, WY; Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale, Denver, CO; and Maynard Dixon Country, Mt. Carmel.
Russell Case now resides in Brigham City, Utah with his wife, Susanne and their three children.

available.
Each year the Stock Show produces a poster by the featured artist that sells as part of the benefit for the

AWARDS
BEST OF SHOW
A select group of prominent art professionals are convened each year to select the piece of art to receive this
$2500 cash award. This award is graciously donated by Tom and Jane Petrie. In 2009 the award went to
William E. Sharer for “Cemetery at Grafton, Utah”.
ARTISTS’ CHOICE
This award is selected by the Coors Western Art Show artists on the evening of the Blue Jean Preview. It is
their choice of the work or body of work by a fellow artist that stands out among his or her peers. The 2009
award went to Dean Mitchell.
MARY BELLE GRANT
Mary Belle Grant was one of the creators and early visionaries of the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale. She
served on the advisory committee since its inception and every year had been a patron and passionate friend
of the arts in the Denver community. Beginning in 2000, the Coors Western Art Exhibit created this award
in her memory to honor an individual who embodies the spirit of the western way of life and symbolizes the
passion of the West through art. This year the advisory committee has selected Nancy Petry to receive the
Mary Belle Grant Award.
PEOPLE’S CHOICE
This honorary award is selected solely by the patrons who visit the exhibit each year. They cast their votes,
which are tallied throughout the event. At the end of the show, the artwork with the most votes wins. Last
year’s winner was “Salt Gap” by Teresa Elliott.
SOUTHWEST ART AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Selected by the editors and publisher of our media patron, Southwest Art magazine. In 2009 awards were given
to painter Terry Gardner and sculptor Steve Kestrel.
RELEASE OF WORK
The exhibit ends on Sunday, January 24. Buyers who have made prior arrangements at the time of purchase
may pick-up artwork on Monday, January 25 in the art gallery between 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. You must have
a copy of your sales invoice to retrieve your purchase(s). All other artwork will be packaged and shipped within
two (2) weeks by Craters & Freighters.
If you purchased a multiple edition of a bronze sculpture, please allow at least two (2) months from the
conclusion of the show for delivery. If you purchased an etching or photograph, please allow up to 4-6 weeks.
In many cases, the artist must create this work if they do not have multiples on hand.
INCOME TAX CONSIDERATIONS
This is for general information only. Please consult your own tax advisor or professional advisor for additional
information. $50 of each individual ticket for the Red Carpet Reception is tax deductible. Each work of art is
sold at the full retail or market value as set by the artist. For silent auction artwork, you will receive a letter
stating tax benefit if applicable.
