1. INTRODUCTION :





This method statement deals with insulation of CHILLED WATER PIPE WORK

AND ANCILLARIES ( above ground ). Before commencement of insulation

activities, all Insulation material must be conform to approved shop drawings and

material submittals.





The purpose of this document is to define the procedure for the above-mentioned

work. The implementation of correct practice for the insulation of Chilled Water

Pipe Work and Ancillaries through the general procedures contained herein.









2. REFERENCE

3. GENERAL





The insulation of pipe work and ancillaries will be achieve in accordance with

requirement of the local codes, manufacturer’s recommendation as per the

material submittal and the following international codes.

4. RESPONSIBILITIES





4.0 All works associated with the above-mentioned project to the supply and

installation of Chilled Water Pipe Work and Ancillaries, will be the

responsibilities of the sub-contractor (*INSERT CONTRACTOR NAME HERE) in

accordance with the

contract documents.





4.1 *INSERT CONTRACTOR NAME HEREresponsibilities for the particular personnel are

as follows :





4.1.0 Project manager will have the overall responsibility for the execution

of the mechanical works.

4.1.1 The Planning Engineer will be responsible for the onward planning

requirements associated with the works the submission to Main

Contractor of all related Projects Plan.

4.1.2 The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the technical

aspect of work.

4.1.3 The Site Mechanical Engineer will be in-charge for the execution of

work at site.

4.1.4 The QA/QC Engineer will be responsible for the quality control of

insulation of works and verification of installed material including

documentation and inspection.





5. MATERIALS HANDLING AND STORAGE AT SITE

5.0 All insulation of Chilled Water Pipe Work and Ancillaries shall be carefully

off-loaded at site using necessary work force/ shifting machinery/ equipment

to ensure that no damage is caused to the materials.

5.1 All materials shall be stored in a clean , dry place and adequate cover shall

be provided to avoid damages.

5.2 Materials shall be shifted to workplace from storage area with the help of

sufficient manpower and equipment if required.

9. INSULATION TYPE

The type of insulation has been classified as fiberglass as AFICO fiberglass

perform snap-on extra rigid pipe section as per relevant specification of ASTM

and BS standards. AFICO K-450 with factory applied glass reinforced flame

retardant aluminum foil jacket laminated on one side. The insulation comply

with Fire Classification per BS 476 ( Part 4 ) ASTM E-84, E-136.





9.0 SPECIFICATION OF PREFORMANCE INSULATION





9.0.0 AFICO fiberglass preformed rigid pipe insulation K-450 as manufactured

Saudi Arabia Insulating Materials Manufacturing Co. ( AFICO).

9.0.1 Density of 4 ib/cu ft. (64 kg. /cu. m. ) and with a K – factor of 0.21

BTU in. /sq. ft. hr. F ( 0.030 W/m. K) at a mean temperature of 77 deg.

F ( 25 deg. C).

9.0.2 Fire Classification as per BS 476 ( Part 4 ), ASTM E- 84 and E- 136 as

non-combustible material. The glass reinforced aluminum foil/Kraft

laminating facing (FSK) are UL classified as flame spread = 5 and

smoke developed =0.

9.0.3 Vapor permeance of 0.00279 perms . 40 mm thick . ( Applicable to

Interior building ) & 50 mm thick . ( Applicable to exterior building –

exposed to ambience temperature ) and supplied to standard length

size of 1200 mm.





10. PREPARATION AND INSTALLATION

10.0 On successful completion of pressure testing of pipes , a mock-up

installation work will be carried out and approval will be obtained from

Company / TPI.

10.1 All insulation work will be carried out in accordance with the approved

manufacturer’s recommendation.

10.2 The external surface of pipe should be clean thoroughly and made

free of dust , oil and grease etc. before application of adhesive.

10.3 Adhesive shall then be applied to surface of pipe strictly according to

manufacturer’s recommendation. The type of adhesive shall be the

approved specification section 230713 – Duct Accessories.

10.4 The insulation shall be placed on the pipes and longitudinal overlap

Sealed with a 75 mm wide vapor barrier seal strips adhered neatly in

place with a vapor barrier adhesive and /or self-adhesive aluminum

tape. Bend shall have insulation with mitered segments of

insulation.

10.5 The joint shall have close butted together and sealed with a 50 mm

wide self adhesive aluminum tape.

10.6 Fitting and valves shall be insulated with molded fittings /mitered

segments of pipe insulation or 0.45 kg. Density of fiberglass blanket

compressed 2 to 1 secure with self adhesive aluminum tape. The

thickness of insulation shall be the same as adjoining insulation.

10.7 Flange shall have section pipe insulation extending a minimum of 25

mm beyond the end of the bolts. Bolt area shall have filling of

insulation material and adhesive.

10.8 All pipes / fittings shall be finish with canvas cloth smoothly adhere

and coated with lagging adhesive.

10.9 The cladding shall be formed true to shape and secured around the

insulation with the self tapping screw or rivets at center not more

than 150 mm or as required.

10.10 The longitudinal overlap of cladding shall be at least 40 mm and the

circumferential overlap shall be at least 50 mm. All joints shall be

lapped to shed the water and the joints sealed thoroughly against

moisture. Bends fittings shall have covering to match aluminum

cladding , tailored to fit and appropriately sealed.

10.11 Pre – fabricated purpose designed boxes shall be used to cover

Valve and flanges.









10.12 Pipe sleeves provided for pipes penetrating floor slabs, walls and

partitions . The insulation carried through the pipes sleeves and the

gap between the sleeves and the insulation packed with rigid loose

fiberglass and sealed with adhesive/ mastic.

10.13 Anodized aluminum sheet or galvanized metal escutcheons

provided both sides of walls exposed to view. The escutcheon

inside diameter shall closely fit to pipe insulation and making a good

finish.

10.14 Insulation pipe hanger shield or saddle shall be installed at hangers.

at the point of support, a wooden insert incased in a sheet metal

shield / saddle protect insulated pipe.

10.15 The insert material and applied insulation shall be tightly joining the

insert. Seal insulation to insulation insert with adhesive or sealing

compounded recommended by the insulation materials

manufacturer.

10.16 Care to consider during the installation ensuring the integrity of

vapor barrier throughout the brackets, supports, and penetration

where vapor barriers indicated.





11. SAFETY





11.0 All installation / construction work will be undertaken in accordance

With Health, Safety, and Environment Plan P- 1215-3-501 and

P-1215-3-502.

11.1 All site personnel shall be provided with necessary personal safety

protective gadget like the hard hat , pair of safety shoes & gloves,

safety belt & goggles and shall be worn at all times if required on

site.
