NBC And Yahoo! Chat Launch "NBC Live" Service
NBC Stars Featured on Yahoo! Chat Service to Kick Off July 19 with All-Star Chat Party
SANTA CLARA, Calif. and NEW YORK -- July 14, 1997 --
Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) and NBC today announced an online chat alliance, teaming the world's most popular
Internet navigational guide with the No. 1 television network. Beginning this month, Yahoo! Chat users will be able to
talk online with NBC "Must-See-TV" stars from the network's stellar prime-time, late-night and daytime lineup, in
regularly-scheduled interactive live chat events.
Building on NBC's leadership role in new media and convergence and Yahoo!'s strength as a leading Web-based
chat service with more than one million registered users, NBC viewers and Yahoo! Chat users will be able to tune in
to NBC Live, a new dedicated NBC chat area on Yahoo! Chat. Each week NBC Live will feature two chats with stars
from NBC's prime-time series, daytime dramas, movies and miniseries, and other network fare, available on the
World Wide Web at www.chat.yahoo.com.
To kick off NBC Live, NBC and Yahoo! Chat will host a gala All-Star Chat Party on Saturday, July 19, at 7:30 p.m.
PST/10:30 p.m. EST, originating from the network's semi-annual press tour headquarters in Pasadena, Calif. Slated
to appear at the party are stars from a wide array of the network's new fall 1997-98 season, including cast members
from "Jenny," "Veronica's Closet," "Sleepwalkers," "Built to Last" and other new shows.
Regularly-scheduled NBC Live chats will occur twice weekly, Monday through Thursday evenings, and will originate
from wherever NBC's stars choose to be÷in limousines, buses, subways, on show sets and studios or in their own
homes.
"This deal is yet another example of giving consumers what they want in the converging worlds of television and new
media," said Edmond Sanctis, senior vice president and general manager, NBC Digital Productions. "Everybody talks
about the importance of building community online. We have heard loud and clear from the communities of fans who
love our shows that they want more of their favorite stories and stars online. With this partnership between the
number one television network and the number one Internet guide, we will get lots of NBC stars communicating
directly with more of their fans at NBC Live on Yahoo! Chat."
"Yahoo! Chat continues to build a range of entertaining features to appeal to our broad, diverse audience," said Ellen
Siminoff, director of Communities, Yahoo! Inc. "Our program with NBC is an exciting opportunity to connect Yahoo!
Chat users with some of the most dynamic stars on television, and to extend awareness of Yahoo! Chat to NBC's
huge audience."
As part of the new agreement, NBC will devote on-air prime-time promotion to publicize NBC Live chat events on
Yahoo! Chat, and will feature NBC stars in an interstitial campaign promoting the new service. Yahoo! will, in-turn,
promote all NBC Live chats on its main site (www.yahoo.com) and will feature a permanent NBC Live button on
Yahoo! Chat.
Advertising on the new NBC Live area on Yahoo! Chat will be sold by Yahoo! Inc, with assistance from NBC
Interactive's Advertising and Client Marketing Division.
About NBC
NBC, a leader among traditional media companies in the interactive field, maintains NBC.com (www.NBC.com), the
network's primary entertainment site on the World Wide Web. NBC.com features original interactive episodes of some
of NBC's most popular shows from daytime to prime-time to late-night, boasting characters and plot twists only found
online, as well as information about NBC shows, stars, stations and international activities. Launched in August 1995,
NBC.com was the first full-time Web offering from a major television network, later becoming the first to feature
original episodic programming.
NBC also manages NBC Interactive Neighborhood, a new local Internet service offered to NBC's 215
owned-and-operated stations and affiliates. Additionally, NBC has pioneered new technologies such as Intercast,
developed with Intel, to enable users to watch television on personal computers while accessing related online text
and graphical content. NBC in June entered into an interactive television programming alliance with enhanced-TV
specialist, Wink Communications Inc. NBC's NBC Interactive division serves as development center for new
businesses such as MSNBC, the unique cable and Internet service that resulted from a partnership between NBC
and Microsoft.
