5 Practitioner action plan
In drawing up our action plan we have concentrated on actions to effect Principle 1 but, with a view to
our journey towards Juno Champion, we have also considered actions pertaining to Principles 2–5.
For each of the actions in our Action Plan, the description is intended to give enough information to
understand the purpose of the action at a glance, but without going into too much detail or providing
additional evidence.
Many of the monitoring processes outlined in our Action Plan are already in place, but they still need to
be formalised in order to ensure that the procedures do not change whenever a new person takes on
one of the Department’s senior roles such as HoD or DoT. For example, the Committee membership
lists are available to all Physics staff members on an internal website, but so far monitoring the
membership in order to ensure fairness and diversity has been done at the discretion of the HoD. This
is now being changed such that the HoD will report on this annually at the first Physics Committee
meeting of the academic year.

5.1 The Action Plan in detail
The Action Plan is presented in full below. A glossary of the terms, accronyms and abbreviations
used is provided in Appendix A.2.
The “Timetable” column is colour-coded as follows:
   • Green indicates that the action has been achieved; it is fully implemented in the Department
procedures and, although it might yet be improved, it is running smoothly.
   • Yellow indicates that implementing the action is ongoing; steps have been taken to implement
it into Department procedures, some processes have already been implemented but it is still a
work in progress. The date in the box indicates when the action will be achieved in the sense
     given above.
   • Pink indicates that an action is planned but implementation has not yet begun. Again, the date
indicates the when the action will be achieved.
In some cases, the description of an action includes a statement that a report will be submitted to the
Physics Committee meeting. It should be emphasized that the reporting of Juno data or information
to the Physics Committee is typically a beginning rather than an end: action of some kind will always
be initiated to deal with any apparent anomalies or infelicities that are identified in the material being
reported. This might take the form of an immediate decision, for the simpler issues where the remedy
is obvious, or the matter might be referred to a subcommittee (e.g. the Admissions Committee or
the Postgraduate Studies Committee) for further analysis and consideration, or a special working
party might be set up. In the latter two cases, the matter would return to the next meeting of the
Physics Committee coupled with a recommendation for appropriate action or, possibly, that no action
is required.
