Obscure Points from Chapter 12
      (Network Basics)
 A Personal Area Network (PAN) is Defined as:
    • Phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs), that communicate with
each other and/or your desktop computer. These devices frequently
have a distance limit of one meter, or a theoretical limit of about ten
      meters.
 A Local Area Network (LAN) is Defined as:
    • A local area network (LAN) is a network that covers a relatively small
area, such as a building, home, office, or campus. The typical
distances are measured in hundreds of meters
 A Metro Area Network is Defined as:
    • A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a network that covers a
metropolitan area, connecting various networks together using a
shared, community network, and often providing WAN connections to
      the Internet.
 A Wide Area Network is Defined as:
    • A wide area network (WAN) can cover the largest geographic area. It
is defined as two or more networks connected over long distances.
Obscure Points from Chapter 12
      (Network Basics)
 What frequency range does the 802.11a wireless standard
    use?
     • 5 GHZ
 What frequency does Blue Tooth Use?
     • 5 GHZ
 What frequency range does the 802.11b wireless standard
    use?
     • 2.4 GHZ
 What frequency range does the 802.11g wireless standard
    use?
     • 2.4 GHZ
 Are the 802.11a and 802.11g standards compatible? (Why
    or Why Not)
     • NO – They use different frequency ranges

     • Integrated Service Digital Network
 Basic Rate Interface (BRI) ISDN Service has how many Data/Voice
Channels and how many signaling channels and what are their
    bandwidths?
     • 2 Data/Voice Channels at 64kbps each and 1 signaling channel at 16
        kbps
 What is the primary difference between ADSL and SDSL?
     • ADSL is Asymmetric (different upstream and downstream data rates)
whereas SDSL is Symmetric and provides the same upstream and
        downstream data rates
