Chapter 1
Introduction. What is a Thin Client…

how does it work, and what are its advantages
A Thin Client is generally a desktop device like a display terminal. To some, it has a lot of resemblance with a
traditional terminal except for the fact that the terminal logic is usually not integrated with the display
monitor. To others, it has a lot of resemblance with a small footprint, or scaled down PC. Both resemblances
are more than a coincidence; they reflect the evolution from a) fixed function terminals to b) Personal
Computers (with many of them used as terminal emulators) to 3) the Thin Clients of today.

Traditional terminals provide access to corporate applications that run on IBM, Unix or other similar host
systems. Thin Clients, like the ones offered by CompuMaster provide access to a wide range of office
applications that can be IBM, Windows, Linux or Unix applications. But instead, those applications run on
powerful PC-based application servers, not in the Thin Clients. As you can see, this centralized approach is
not new. And that is in part why Server-based computing and Thin Clients are increasing in popularity …it is
a proven architecture.

Traditional terminals feature very little intelligence and provide a very limited set of functions that cannot be
changed. For the most part, they provide means for a user to enter information, view information and initiate
tasks that would be accomplished by software applications running on a central host computer. While Thin
Clients feature more intelligence, and are more flexible, their primary purpose is to enter information, view
information, and initiate tasks that are accomplished by applications running on application servers.

Personal Computers are self-contained; they contain a processor, permanent and removable storage and run
business applications locally. Most of us have experienced a hard disk failure or a virus infection. And all of us
are confronted with regular software maintenance tasks like upgrading the Operating System and
applications, making backups, maintaining up to date virus protection software, etc. And if that was not
enough, PCs easily becomes obsolete because newer PC applications continuously demand more resource.
Now, imagine companies with hundreds and thousands of PCs!

CompuMaster Thin Clients do not contain a hard disk, a floppy disk, a CD reader, or even a fan. That allows
them to be smaller and because they have no moving parts, they are far more reliable than PCs. Thin Clients
do not run business applications locally, therefore are not affected by viruses and they do not require
constant Operating System and application updates like PCs.

Much like PCs however, CompuMaster Thin Clients connect to their application servers over a LAN and use
popular Internet protocols like TCP/IP. Considering most corporate LANs today are Ethernet and TCP/IP
based, deploying Thin Clients merely involves connecting it to the existing LAN.

To the majority of corporate environments, Thin Clients can cost effectively replace aging traditional
terminals and most PCs. Business applications that used to run on individual PCs now run on an application
server. Companies no longer have to dispatch service technicians to remote locations to carry out PC
maintenance tasks. Virus protection is centralized, hardware and software maintenance tasks are centralized,
server resources utilization are optimized. Software and hardware upgrades on the application servers are
immediately available to Thin Client users.

Centralizing resources also means centralizing management. To this end, Thin Clients excel; they can be
completely managed remotely. The same personnel responsible for the application servers can accomplish
their deployment, configuration and on-going management.

It is no surprise that an increasing number of companies have endorsed, or are in the process of endorsing
Server-based computing. It is an extremely cost-efficient computing model. Thin Clients like the ones offered
by CompuMaster are an essential component of this new model.

CompuMaster XP Thin Client Quick Reference Guide

Introducing the XP series
The XP terminal models are the CompuMaster solution for those companies that require a native Microsoft
terminal with the security of a Thin client and the flexibility of a Microsoft® Xpe Operating System.

The powerful new VIA Eden 533/600 MHz and 1.5 GHz processor models provide optimal performance for
virtually any type of application.

The CompuMaster TN5250E / TN3270E Emulator makes it possible to connect to IBM AS/400 or
Mainframe hosts exactly as traditional terminals. The CompuMaster emulation supports Split Screen, Hot
Spot, Macros, and printer emulation features not found in other products.

Resident ICA and RDP clients provide access to Microsoft Terminal Servers and Citrix applications.

CompuMaster XP models are Flexible, because they are based on a platform derived directly from the classic
Microsoft® XP operating system, allowing the support and installation of peripheral, drivers and Microsoft
compatible applications.

CompuMaster XP models are Secure, because they are specifically developed for an embedded architecture
which provides a “locked down” configuration.

CompuMaster XP models are Simple, they appear and operate as a classic Windows XP device, without the
hard drive.

CompuMaster CrossRun Client, supports the access of crypted and compressed applications via SSH,
seamless windows, and load balancing, on a Microsoft Terminal Server with CrossRun Server software.

The native Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 integrated Browser with JVM, ActiveX, Flash player, and PDF viewer
provides a powerful browsing environment for accessing Internet or Intranet information.

The flexibility of the operating system allows easy integration of browser specific plug-ins for support of
future browser enhancements.

The absence of Fans and hard disks make the reliability of these terminals 9 times higher than a normal PC
or laptop while consuming less power.

Chapter 2. Additional Windows XPe Features
The operating system of the Microsoft Windows XPe-based thin client has extended features not found in the
standard Microsoft Windows XP operating system.
With the exception of the pre-installed applications like Remote Desktop client, Citrix ICA client (Program
Neighborhood), Terminal Emulation application, controls for extended Windows XPe features are only
available through the Administrator logon account.

NOTE: A write filter is enabled on the thin client for security and to prevent excessive flash write activity.
Changes to the thin client configuration are lost when the thin client is restarted unless the write filter cache
is disabled or a commit command is issued during the current boot session.
See the write filter chapter of this guide for detailed instructions.
Remember to always enable the write filter when you no longer want changes to be permanent.

2.1 First device Logon

Write filter
The Enhanced Write Filter Manager provides a secure environment for thin-client.
It does this by protecting the thin client from undesired flash memory writes (flash memory is where the
operating system and functional software components reside).
The write filter also extends the life of the thin client by preventing excessive flash write activity.
It gives the appearance of read-write access to the flash by employing a cache to intercept all flash writes
and returning success to the process that requested the I/O.

The intercepted flash writes stored in cache are available as long as the thin client remains active, but will be
lost when the thin client is rebooted or shut down. To preserve the results of writes to the registry, favorites,
cookies, and so forth, the contents of the cache can be transferred to the flash on demand using the
Enhanced Write Filter Manager.

After the write filter has been disabled, all future writes during the current boot session are written to the
flash, with no further caching until a reboot occurs.
Always enable the writer filter after all of your permanent changes have been successfully made.

Write filter tool is available from Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tool -> Flash Disk Write
Protection.

Click on the “Flash Disk Write Protection” to open the following window:
