NEA Foundation for the Improvement of Education Offers Funding for
Public School Innovation
Created by the National Education Association in 1969, the NEA Foundation for the Improvement
of Education works to help public education employees improve teaching and learning in U.S.
society. The foundation is currently accepting applications for a number of funding programs.
Innovation Grants support two or more public school teachers, education support personnel,
and/or faculty in public institutions of higher education who collaborate to develop and implement
innovative ideas that result in high student achievement. The foundation will award up to 200
grants per year in the amount of $2,000 each. Grant funds may be used for resource materials,
supplies, equipment, transportation, software, and professional fees. Grant funds may also be
used for professional development necessary to implement the innovative idea. Applications may
be submitted at any time.
Learning & Leadership Grants fund high-quality professional development for public school
teachers, public education support personnel, and public higher education faculty and staff,
enabling them to lead their colleagues in efforts to improve teaching and learning. Both individual
and group grants are available. The individual grant amount is $1,000; group grants are $3,000.
The foundation will award approximately forty-five individual grants and ten group grants a year.
(Groups consist of two or more educators.) Applications postmarked by October 15, 2001, will
receive a decision by February 28, 2002.

Random Acts of Kindness Foundation Announces Teachers Lesson Plan
Contest
The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation supports the global Kindness Movement by
encouraging and assisting individuals and groups who wish to perform kind acts. The foundation
provides leadership, inspiration, guidance, educational and promotional materials, and
opportunities to connect with people around the world.
To help fulfill its mission, the foundation collects lesson plans and makes them available to others
interested in promoting Kindness in their schools. To honor the efforts of these teachers, the
Random Acts of Kindness Foundation will award $500 each to the teachers who submit the ten
best Random Acts of Kindness lesson plans. Teachers (or past/retired teachers) involved in
Kindness projects and/or activities in their classrooms are eligible to participate.
