Placement/Proficiency Exams

CHEMISTRY PLACEMENT EXAM (GCPT)



Chemistry Building, Room 101

Freshmen - August 11, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. (The day before orientation)

Transfers - August 12, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. (The day before orientation)



All students planning to take General Chemistry I [CH131 and CH 131 Lab] are required to take the General Chemistry Placement

Test (GCPT). A passing score is required in order to register for CH 131 and CH 131 Lab. Students who do not make a passing score

must take CH 100 Fundamentals of Chemistry prior to taking CH 131. Students must bring their student number (J00), a #2 pencil

and their own calculator to this test. There is no fee for this exam.

General Chemistry I is required primarily for students in the colleges of Allied Health Professions, Engineering and some Arts and

Sciences programs. If you have questions, please call the Department of Chemistry at (251) 460-6181.







COMPUTING PROFICIENCY/PLACEMENT EXAM (CPE)

Computer Science Classroom Building, Room 19

Freshmen - August 11, 2009 at 9:15 a.m. (The day before orientation)

Transfers - August 12, 2009 at 9:15 a.m. (The day before orientation)



All undergraduate students must demonstrate basic computing skills prior to graduation from the University of South Alabama. This

requirement may be satisfied by:

1. passing the Computer Proficiency Examination,

or

2. passing CIS 150: Introduction to Computer Applications, or another CIS course specified by the major,

or

3. for students who are pursuing a major leading to teacher certification, passing EDM 310: Microcomputing Systems in

Education. This course is required for all teacher certification programs,

Students are advised to complete the computer requirement in their freshman year since computing skills are used in most courses.

Students who do not pass the CPE may repeat the exam one time. Those students who do not pass the CPE two times must comply

with either #2 or #3 above.

In addition to New Student Orientation, the proficiency exam is administered four times during the semester. Times, dates and

location can be found by calling the School of Computer and Information Sciences at (251) 460-6390 or online at

www.cis.usouthal.edu/proficiencyexam. The exam takes approximately one hour and 15 minutes to complete.









MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT EXAM

AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY!





All students who plan to take a mathematics course and have not taken this exam online or have not successfully completed and

transferred a college level math course of MA112 or higher are required to take the online Mathematics Placement Exam 48 hours

prior to orientation. Calculators are not permitted during this exam.

Students are encouraged to take the Math Placement Exam online before coming to campus for orientation. The exam is ONLY

available online from any computer with Internet access at: www.southalabama.edu/mathplacement/. If you have questions, please

call the Department of Mathematics at (251) 460-6264.

Important note to new USA students admitted as “Freshmen with Special Requirements”: Do not take the online Math

Placement Exam. You will take a math placement exam on the day of your orientation session. Questions, contact the Academic

Success advisor at (251) 460-7155.









Note: Failure to take the proper exams could result in delayed class registration.
