FAT ASS 5k Walk and Run for Multiple Sclerosis by keralaguest

FAT ASS 5k Proceeds to Benefit Multiple Sclerosis
Photos and Story by Terri Noel

The first annual Fat Ass 5k & Street Party Run-Walk for Charity was held in downtown
Springfield on May 10. This year the charity selected to receive the proceeds was the National
Multiple Sclerosis Society. The event drew 380 participants and countless others that enjoyed
the Street Party with a pig roast, cold beer, and live music. The MS Society was presented a
check for $17,500 from entry fees and sponsorships raised during the event.

Race winners for the women participants were Pamela Stevens, first place; Patricia Schaefer,
second place; and Kim Sharpe, third place. For men, Mike Witsman, took first place; Jason
Beeler, second place; and Jay Wessler, third place.

Corporate Philanthropists at the $1000 plus sponsor level for this year’s premiere event were
Eck, Schaefer & Punke, LLP; Celtic Mist Pub, Coors Light Chick Fritz Distributing; Springfield
Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co.; Robert’s Sysco Food Services; Marine Bank of Springfield; Lake
Pointe Bar & Grill; Refreshment Services, Inc. and Famous Ferg’s Graphic Design.

An estimated 400,000 Americans have MS. Most are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50
(though MS has been found in young children as well), and about two thirds are women. The
disease is more frequently found among people who grew up in colder climates. Studies indicate
that genetic factors make certain individuals susceptible to the disease, but there is no evidence
that MS is directly inherited.
