,Google has put out a new Webmaster Help video, featuring (as usual) head
of web spam Matt Cutts. This time, Cutts is answering his own question, rather
than a user-submitted question. The question is: What is the ideal keyword
density: 0.7%, 75, or 77%? Or is it some other number?―A lot of people there‘s
some one recipe, and you can just follow that like baking cookies, and if
you follow it to the letter, you‘ll rank number one,‖ he says.Shockingly,
that‘s not the case. There‘s no set percentage for keyword density, that will
help you rank, according to Cutts. ―That‘s not the way that search engine
rankings work,‖ he says.―The way that modern search engines, or at least
Google, are built,‖ says Cutts with a slight chuckle, ―is that the first time
you mention a word, you know, ‗Hey, that‘s pretty interesting. It‘s about
that word.‘ The next time you mention that word, ‗oh, OK. It‘s still about
that word.‘ And once you start to mention it a whole lot, it really doesn‘t
help that much more. There‘s diminishing returns. It‘s just an incremental
benefit, but it‘s really not that large.‖―And what you‘ll find is that if
you continue to repeat stuff over and over again, then you‘re getting in danger
of keyword stuffing, or gibberish and those kinds of things.‖―So, the first
one or two times you mention a word – that might help with your ranking.
Absolutely. But just because you can say it seven or eight times, that doesn‘t
mean that it will necessarily help your rankings.‖―The way to think about
it is this,‖ Cutts wraps up. ―Think about the keywords that you‘d like to
have in your copy. Make sure your copy is long enough that you can work those
keywords into your copy in a natural way and not an artificial way. And my
recommendation is to either read it aloud or read it to someone else or have
someone else read it, and sort of say, ‗Do you spot anything that‘s artificial
or stilted or that doesn‘t quite read right?‘ And if you can read through
the copy, and have it read naturally where a person isn‘t going to be annoyed
by it, then you‘re doing relatively well.‖Another tip for surviving Panda?
Don‘t annoy readers.,,I wrote a post earlier today about YouTube‘sthis
Christmas season and, while those ideas are okay, YouTube seems to have
dropped the ball with their list of helpful hints because they left out one
amazing suggestion: a rainbow sponge.Dee Gruening, sponge-enthusiast and
lover of 80′s-style MC Hammer-pants patterns, is a purveyor of rubber stamps
and rainbow sponges that can be used to make wavy color patterns on anything.
Paper, wood, faces – you name it. If it‘s got a surface, it‘s asking for some
Dee-treatment. In fact, Gruening humbly admits that she ―was one of the first
to establish rubber stamping as a rage.‖ Gruening is also the reigning
Stampstress Supreme at her business where you can acquire all of the means
necessary to indulge your stamping stampede (I can‘t believe I just tried
that joke).Gruening is pretty enthusiastic about her craft, especially when
it comes time to use some rainbow sponges to show that smug white paper who‘s
the color boss. From her website,Dense compressed sponges provide application
of colors and effects like no other for backgrounds, tiles and original art
designs. Use is limited only by one‘s imagination as it is the tool for the
adventuresome and artful. Delightfully different from any other stamping,
scrapbooking or paper arts product. Inkabilities inks work well not only on
paper, but are wonderful to provide enhanced colors for polymer clay, Suze‘s
melting pot creations and most surfaces. In other words, you have no excuse
to not create mind-bending art that will undoubtedly rend any recipient of
this gift to a wad of gleeful tears. How does the sponge work, you ask? Gruening
is more than delighted to introduce you to this craft of arcana. So now,
without further ado, I present to you Dee Gruening‘s whole video devoted to
the Rainbow Sponge.I have to say, listening to Gruening squeal and moan and
effuse about wiggling while she rasps about what that rainbow sponge is doing
for her, I don‘t think I‘ve ever been that excited or felt that great about
anything in my life (and I feel like I‘ve had some pretty awesome experiences,
too). Like, I don‘t have a rich enough vocabulary to explain to you what‘s
happening in my brain right now; my gears fly off of their pinions whenever
I hear her exclaim, ―Of course you can go straight,‖ and then creates a swirl
of rainbows. And at 1:14, I halfway expect her to start hissing about ―the
preshuzzz‖ with her next wiggle.As a post-script to this article – because
how can one be expected to dutifully sum up this phenomenon – I really think
D-Wiggles should be my rap name.,,Facebook announced that its final wave of
employees have moved into the company‘s new campus in Menlo Park from its
previous Palo Alto location. The campus consists of 10 buildings. There are
2,000 employees in the East Campus, with a vacant lot next door for ―further
developments‖. The company says it is hoping to accommodate a lot more in
the years to come.from John Tenanes, Facebook‘s Global Director of Real
Estate, says:Some features of the campus might be familiar. We‘ve always
believed in ―hacking out‖ our space—putting up posters and scribbling ideas
on the walls—so we lined the hallways with chalkboard paint and put a box
of chalk on everyone‘s desk. Everywhere you go is stimulating and different.
We‘ve exposed the ductwork along the high-ceilinged corridors to give the
place an unfinished feel and remind us that our work is never done. There are
no private offices or cubicles. We tore down those unnecessary walls so that
everyone could sit out in the open with their teams. We‘ve scattered hundreds
of conference rooms and ―cozies‖—little breakaway spaces filled with couches
and brightly colored chairs—throughout the buildings. As people run into each
other in hallways or at the micro-kitchens, it‘s important that they can
quickly duck away somewhere if they want to chat or hash out ideas. Every
conference room features a glass wall or panel so that you can quickly see
what‘s going on inside. This is because we believe transparency and openness
help us move fast, even as we grow. The whole campus is connected through a
central courtyard. Right now it‘s still filled with bulldozers and dirt, but
when it‘s finished, we‘ll have two full-service cafes, two coffee shops,
on-site doctors, a fitness center, and much more. And as always, we still
offer other perks like free dry cleaning and endless snacks in our
micro-kitchens.Facebook has donated laptops to Meno Park‘s Belle Haven Middle
School, is running safety workshops, and has sponsored Zimride to come to
the city.Tenanes says Facebook will soon launch ―Facebucks,‖ which is
described as a program that incentivizes employees to ―get out, enjoy and
spend money in downtown Menlo Park.‖He adds that the company is ―relentlessly
focused‖ on minimizing its impact on the environment, and is pursuing a LEED
Gold certification, offering recycling and composting bins everywhere for
employees. He says the company has reused as much of the existing structure
as possible, and is offering a transportation program to provide alternatives
to single-car commuting (including free shuttles from the surrounding areas,
vanpools, bicycles, and a partnership with Zimride). The company says it
doesn‘t plan to add a single new parking space to the existing campus as it
grows.,,When the Samsung Galaxy Nexuson Verizon‘s network late last week,
it did so without Google Wallet, Google‘s much anticipated mobile payment
platform. Verizon blocked the app on the device, vague security concerns about
the platform‘s integration with the phone‘s hardware. Despite afrom a
security firm suggesting that Google Wallet really does have security issues,
many speculated that Verizon was trying to kill Google Wallet in order to
make room for ISIS, a mobile payment platform co-founded by Verizon, AT&T,
and T-Mobile.Unfortunately for Verizon, though, Android has a thriving
community of people who specialize getting features on their phones that they
aren‘t supposed to have. The result is a fairly easythat allows users to
install Google Wallet on their phones – and a $10 prepaid MasterCard, to boot.
While Google‘s vision for Google Wallet is that it be tightly integrated into
the hardware – specifically the near field communication equipment – the hack
installs it just like any other app, though reports seem to be that it works
just as well. There is no word yet on when, or if, Verizon will officially
be bringing Google Wallet to the Galaxy Nexus. Nor do we know yet if AT&T
and T-Mobile will follow Verizon‘s lead in shutting Google out of the very
lucrative mobile payment market by blocking Google Wallet on their versions
of the device as well. If they do, we can be sure that it won‘t keep determined
users from getting it anyway, thanks to Android‘s determined rooting
community.Meanwhile, Verizon‘s blocking of Google Wallet strikes many on
