Changes since the last update are highlighted in YELLOW
Before raising any campaign funds, candidates for the state Assembly or Senate must file a
form with the CA Secretary of State called a “Statement of Intention” (SI).
Shown in this Supplement to the California Target Book are those individuals who have filed
an SI to run in one of the Assembly or Senate districts that will be OPEN SEATS in 2010 due to the
incumbent being termed out, is giving up their seat to run for another office or retiring.
Not included are those who may have announced their interest in running in one of these
districts but have not, as of this date, filed an SI.
Also excluded are those who filed an SI but have since publicly announced that they are not
running. Candidates running in safe Democratic or safe Republican districts of the opposition party are
also excluded.
Candidates who raised campaign funds from Jan. 1 through June 30 of this year totaling
$50,000 or more were required to file electronic reports with the Secretary of State’s office no later
than 5 PM July 31. All dollar amounts shown in this Supplement were obtained from these electronic
reports.
Candidates showing no dollar amounts either did not reached the $50,000 threshold at the close
of filing and therefore were not required to file an electronic report, OR organized their campaign
committee AFTER the 6/30/09 filing period.
Included in this Supplement are many candidates who filed a Statement of Intention after the
2009 First Edition of the California Target Book went to press. Candidate profiles on these candidates
were included in a subsequent Target Book Hot Sheet and the date of that Hot Sheet is noted in this
Supplement. Subscribers can view past Hot Sheets on the California Target Book web site at
