Dog walkers -

know your rights

Waltham Forest Council is reminding dog owners that there

are designated areas in the borough where they can let their

dogs run free.

Dogs must be kept on a leash, less than eight metres

long, and be under control at all times except in Higham Hill

Recreation Ground, Chestnut Fields and Highams Park (the park

itself) where they can run free.

A person is only allowed to walk a maximum of six dogs at a

time on their own and dogs cannot be taken onto sites where

they are specifically banned, such as children’s play areas.

While they might seem a long way off, work has already begun

to prepare for next year’s Council and general elections.

Local government elections will take place on May 6 and

while the general election date is yet to be announced, the

Waltham Forest 2010 Electoral Register has just been published.

Despite sterling work by doorstep canvassers and the

electoral services team sending out reminders, around 8,000

people still haven’t returned their voter registration form.

Remember, it’s not just about being able to have your say on

who runs the Council and country – not being on the electoral

register can also adversely affect your credit rating.

Our Safety

In brief

Youngsters train

police in stop and

search techniques

A groundbreaking scheme organised by Waltham Forest Council

has seen young people training territorial support group (TSG)

officers in stop and search techniques.

The training, by the borough’s Youth Independent Advisory

Group, looked at how to more effectively stop and search young

people without causing unnecessary offence.

The young people also patrolled with the TSG, monitored their

stop and searches, and made recommendations on how they

should be conducted in future.

If the scheme is successful it will be rolled out across London.

Advisory Group and what it does, contact Waltham Forest

The Lady Poet

Ethel Dyall, 84, has lived and raised her

family in her council home of 54 years. The

house was built 1919 for returning war

heroes after the first World War.

Ethel got the writing bug after attending a

creative writing course in the 1980s and has

been writing poetry and rhymes ever since.

One of her latest poems captures her ordeal of

being stuck in her toilet for nine hours, not de-

terred by the experience, she put pen to paper.

Ethel is currently working on a collection of poems titled, ‘Pride, Poverty and

Piano’ which she hopes to get published next year. Due to Ethel’s physical

difficulties, and as a result of her entrapment, adaptations were made to her

toilet and bathroom that include a new walk-in shower. Ethel is delighted with

the changes that have been made.

Ethel was full of praise for the Ascham Homes and Breyer Group staff in-

volved and said, “Thank you very much for looking after me, I miss you all

being around. Many thanks for what you have done for me.”

Ethel recently had another fall and broke her funny bone, of all

the bones to pick, Ethel certainly picked the funniest! We wish

her a speedy recovery and a healthy new year!

Leyton

In brief

Coping Through

Football

Coping Through Football is an innovative project aimed at adults

living in Waltham Forest who have mental health problems. The

sessions are run by coaches from Leyton Orient Community Sports

Programme and provide an opportunity to get fit, improve physical

and mental health, meet people and improve football skills.

The project can also help people to take FA level 1 coaching

courses and has opportunities for volunteers to assist in the

project as well as a range of social activities such as watching

Leyton Orient matches and five-a-side tournaments. Coping

through football sessions are held on Thursdays between 2-4pm

at The Score Centre, Oliver Road, Leyton.
