Engineering Specifications for Sand Filter System
PART 1 – PRODUCTS

 1.1        GENERAL:
 1.1.1      The contractor shall furnish and install a Filtration System as shown and detailed on the
            contract documents. The unit shall be installed in accordance with this specification
            Section, and perform at the conditions as listed.

 1.1.2      Approved Manufacturers: Griswold Filtration

 1.1.3      Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering products that may be
            incorporated into the “Work” include, but are not limited to, the following: Griswold

 1.2        FILTRATION SYSTEMS FOR COOLING TOWERS
 1.2.1      Furnish and install a filtration system such as the Griswold Filtration Sand Filter. The
            system shall be used on condenser water, cooling tower recirculation systems and closed
            loop systems as specified herein.

 1.3        SYSTEM DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION:
 1.3.1      For Condenser water, cooling tower, recirculation systems, the Griswold Filtration’s Sand
            Filter unit shall consist of a skid mounted self-contained side stream basin sweeper
            system with sweeper piping and “eductors”. [Recommended range of 10 to 15%, modified
            as required due to operational considerations] [Sweeper piping requires a HH pump].

 1.3.2      For Closed Loop systems, the Griswold Filtration’s Sand Filter unit shall be a skid
            mounted self-contained side stream system [Recommended range 8 to 10%] [normally
            LH pump].

 1.3.3      The skid mounted self-contained side stream filtration system will remove debris via
            filtration and keep the system free from debris on the fill material, pipes, heat exchangers,
            valves and other components in the system.

1.4               SPECIFICATION

1.4.1             The Griswold Filtration’s Sand Filter provides a factory-assembled water filtration of the
                  permanent media type for removing contaminants from the recirculating water of cooling
                  towers, condensers, chillers, and /or heat exchangers. The standard filtration system
                  shall consist of Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, or Fiberglass filter tank of suitable size for
                  20 gpm/sq.ft. flow rates and shall include:


        • complete filter media                                • top service port
        • bottom drain outlet                                  • automatic and manual air relief valve
        • inlet-outlet pressure differential gauges            • removable under drain stainless steel
        • recirculating pump                                      wedge-wire screens
        • Control panel prewired in NEMA 4 enclosure           • automatic backwash valves


1.4.2             Sand Filter Tanks: Carbon & Stainless Steel shall be rated at a maximum working
                  pressure of 80 psi, and a maximum temperature of 100 Degrees F. Fiberglass shall be
                  rated at a maximum working pressure of 50 psi, and a maximum temperature of 73
                  degres F. Both shall be provided with an internal overdrain pipe assembly with
                  underdrain designed to balance flow and evenly distribute the water over the filter media.

1.4.3             Pump & Motor: End suction close coupled cast iron pump with bronze impeller, TEFC
                  motor with 1.15 service factor, mechanical seal to include carbon rotary, Sil-Carbide
                  stationary, and Viton Elastomer.

1.4.4             Control Panel: NEMA 4 watertight powder coated enclosure, disconnect starter with
                  thermal overload, 120VAC magnetic contactor, multi-terminal connection, differential
                  pressure switch, HOA selector switch, backwash by differential pressure switch, manual
                  override backwash push button, and by scheduled clock, door disconnect, 460/120VAC
                  transformer with primary/secondary circuit breakers, PLC backwash timer, pump “run”
                  light, backwash “on” light.

1.4.5             Media: The No.20 silica sand media used in all Griswold Sand Filters are designed to
                  remove up to 95% by volume of the suspended solids 10 micron and larger.

1.4.6             Lateral/Under Drain Assembly: 316 stainless steel standard wound wedge wire screen
                  is used with Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel filter tanks. Fiberglass Tank uses a plastic
                  screen.

1.4.7             Basket Strainer: Cast iron pump basket strainer with ¼” perforated 304 stainless steel
                  internal screen with quick opening cover.

1.4.8             Piping: Schedule 80 PVC piping with exterior enamel finish.

1.4.9             Y-Strainer (Tower Water Backwash Only): Cast iron y-strainer with 100-mesh located
                  between pump and lower backwash valve assembly.

1.4.9.1          Frame: Carbon steel metal frame with exterior powder coat finish. Complete systems
                 [16”-36”] shall be mounted on the powder coated steel frame. Sand Filters larger than 36”
                 will be shipped as a separate component, and the associated pump, control panel, and
                 frame will be shipped as an additional unit.

1.5       INSTALLATION
1.5.1.    Install per Manufacturers IOM.

1.8       Warranty

1.8.1     The sand filter shall be warranted to be free of manufacturing defects for a period
          of 60 months from date of installation, or 66 months from date of sale, whichever
          is first.
          Griswold Filtration warrants System Components, Sand Filter Accessories be
          free from defect in material and workmanship for a period of twelve (12) months
          from date of install, or eighteen (18) months from date of purchase, whichever is
          less. Griswold Filtration will repair or replace, at its discretion, a component,
          which has failed due to material or workmanship. This twelve-month period
          applies to all products used in the manufacture of Separator Systems except the
          separator.
