Guideline for Conducting Interviews
Below is a short list of guidelines for the purpose of increasing the effectiveness of selection
interviews
Preparation
Set up a professional job interview area
Be sure you will not be interrupted during the interview (allow 45 –60 minutes)
Set aside time after the interview so you can review your notes and make and evaluation
Establish rapport, striving for a relaxed business like atmosphere
Listen And Observe
Let the candidate talk
Give the candidate time to think about his/her responses to your question
Allow the candidate to do most of the talking
Do not be too quick to speak if there is a moment of silence
Question
Observe the candidate’s behavior as he/she responds during the interview
Keep questions simple, straightforward and open-ended
Ask additional questions when you need more information or clarification
Get accurate and complete answers-pay attention to what the candidate is saying
Make frequent use of “why” and “how
Be sincere and show respect for all candidates
Take Notes
Inform all candidates that you will be taking notes
Take comprehensive notes during the interview process
Use your notes to clarify information or questions
Taking notes increases accuracy and reduces bias in evaluating interview information
Scoring/Evaluation
Add the points in each of the nine evaluation categories to determine score
After your interview, evaluate the candidate qualifications based on overall score together with
your own observations
Decide whether or not to continue with the selection process for particular candidate
If unsure or question remain, schedule an additional interview
