Produce your own highly nutritious natural feed that compares with
popular pelleted feeds for only a fraction of the cost all year round!
When it comes to the health and wellbeing of our horses we all want to do the right thing.
Ensuring your horse is healthy and happy means better performance, whether you are
breeding, competing or riding for pleasure the same rule applies. Often doing the best by
your horse in terms of their health means you need to pay premium prices for feed or does
it? If you could grow your own superior feed on the farm that was high energy, had no
starch (fizz), provided protein and bioavailable
vitamins and minerals for less than the cost of hay, wouldn’t you want it?

The “sprout mat” is completely
edible and highly nutritious as
it is a living food. The animals
will eat the entire mat, roots
and green growth so there is no
waste.
Nearly all of the feeds you buy at a produce store are
dead, due to the fact that they have been highly
processed, by roasting steaming or extruding
(pressure cooking) and then they are forced dry. By
processing the ingredients all of the beneficial
enzymes and bacteria are destroyed.
Horses were never meant to eat dry dead feeds. Have
you ever wondered what horses use to eat before we
forced them to eat processed unnatural feeds? The
answer is all natural living grasses the types you find
in the paddock, how about having a paddock in a box?
The Fodder Solutions System has been designed
with sprouts in mind, research and years of
practical application has meant the guesswork
has been taken out of growing a low cost highly
nutritious feed on the farm.

“At Wattle Brae our system gives green
feed all year round. It’s a godsend.
We’re paying $800 for one tonne of
Lucerne hay and it is hard to get but this
feed is on demand. We also believe it
will be a key to keeping fertility rates up
in the present dry conditions. We know
there is a definite link between fresh

What water source can we use?
Rain water, dam water and bore water are suitable for use.
FODDER solutions systems can use any type of water to run the system provided it is
clean or filtered. If it is necessary to treat your water, FODDER solutions can supply
filters and water treatment devices.
Incredible Water Savings
Water consumption is minimal and passed through irrigation water can be used for animals.
The system uses only 2 to 3 litres of water to produce 1 kilogram of green grass. Conventional growing
methods require about 80 litres of water.
This represents an incredible water saving – using as little as 1/20 of a regular farm and little impact on
the water table from water use and farm chemical run-offs.
The team at Fodder solutions
understands that each horse is unique so we have
approached one of Queensland’s leading animal
nutritionists to independently research, test and for-
mulate our sprouts. Not only are our current barley
grass sprouts being put through rigorous testing, but
also our superior combinations of sprouts.
That will mean we can safely put the
GREEN back into your feeding scene.

Lisette New had the following answers to a few of our questions:
How many horses and what type of horses are they?
I have 7 horses to feed: two young Warmblood geldings, two young Paint horse geldings, one Warmblood
broodmare, one Quarter horse broodmare and an aged Shetland pony gelding.
What climate conditions do you face where you are?
I have lived in the Lockyer Valley for 6 years and my property has received minimal to ‘just enough’ rainfall in
that time. 2007 saw the worst condition of my property with scarce grazing availability. Buying enough hay
and ‘hard feed’ to keep them hunger-free was an enormously expensive task, and frequently had to be rationed
due to hay shortages. It was very stressful keeping a routine quantity available and I worried about colic due to
changes in hay quality from dusty mouldy hay, to prime lucerne which only produces scours in horses on dry
paddocks.
What did you feed your horses before fodder?
Each horse was provided with an extruded feed appropriate to its age and development. Foals were prepared
on excellent pre-mix and as they progressed from weaning to yearlings the feeds were upgraded to provide for
their appropriate growing requirements. I had studied Feeding and Nutrition in Applied Equine Science and
was certain that my horses were receiving adequate and appropriate nutrition through commercially available
pre-mixed grain feeds..
What were your costs?
I was spending between $600-$800 per fortnight during the peak of the 2007 drought. I had heard of the Fod-
der Solutions System and just assumed that it would be out of my reach financially. It wasn’t until I saw a dis-
play unit at the 2008 Toowoomba Royal Show that I realised how affordable and cost-effective this system is.
What are you feeding now?
My Fodder Solutions System has been in place for 3 months now and my horses are all completely on sprouts,
taking about 10 days to accept the sprouts but now they can’t get their sprouts quickly enough each morning and
evening! I mix barley, sunflowers and lupins and feed ½ biscuit to each horse per feed, with the pony receiving a
few handfuls from the other biscuits with this being quite sufficient for all of them. The quality of the sprouts is
the same week-in, week-out, I no longer have to worry about dusty feeds or weevils.
What is the cost?
I would like to draw a comparison with this system to feeding hard feeds. The Fodder System requires 1.2kg of
seed per tray, which produces a matt of sprouts weighing between 8-10kg. This biscuit is enough for one horse
per day, and I feed half morning and night. 1.2kg of barley, sunflower seed and lupins costs approx 88 cents per
horse per day, add electricity and water to run the Unit which rounds to about a dollar per horse per day.
The previous system involved feeding roughage and between 3-5kg hard feed per horse per day, at a cost aver-
aging $30 per 25kg bag - $5 per horse per day.
All that I additionally require now is roughage – adequate pasture grass or grassy / barley hay for the stabled
horses, so I no longer need to buy expensive lucerne hay.
How hard is the unit to use and maintain?
Minimal maintenance! Seeding up takes less than 10 minutes per day. The unit does all the hard work as every-
thing is automated.
What difference have you noticed in your horses?
I have had 2 horses stabled and prepared for the winter showing season but the other five have remained in pad-
docks. To my amazement, every horse’s coat is positively gleaming, even dappling, which is normally only seen in
their coats when prepared on the most expensive Show Preps! The young horses’ body conditions were main-
tained and improving even though winter was quite harsh, the older horses have consistently maintained excel-
lent body condition through-out winter. But the most amazing difference has been the change in tempera-
ments. One 2 year-old has been an extremely challenging horse due to an accident and injury he sustained as a 9
month-old colt, which left him traumatised. I decided to embark on a Show Season with this youngster to give
him some exposure and experience, believing that an early and gentle introduction into competition would be of
a psychological benefit.
He had 2 Shows ‘before sprouts’: nervous, arrogant and fidgety. ’After sprouts’ we still had 3 more Shows on our
programme for him. We were astounded at the complete turnaround of his attitude both at home, and out in
public, he became so mellow and gentle, and took the Show scene with all its noise and drama with all the ease
and aplomb of a seasoned professional, with Championships to his credit! His nature is now pleasant which is
testament to the cool energy available by feeding sprouts.
Why do you recommend this system?
Results! Cost-effective, consistently highly nutritious, palatable green feed available ALL YEAR ROUND. If you
want fantastic results – prepare your horses on barley sprouts!!!!
Fodder Solutions is Dr Green
Fodder Solutions “Dr Green” equine fodder may look just like grass but on closer examination it is far
better. Fodder Solutions manufacture a specialized growing system that transforms dry dead grains,
such as barley, sunflowers and lupins, into a lush highly nutritious feed known to many as “Dr Green”.
This feed contains as much energy (DM) as many popular pelleted feeds and grains but with very little
starch. The protein levels are comparable to any quality processed feeds.
Over 80% of the feed is digestible; meaning more of what you are feeding is being utilized by your
horses. Most importantly this feed is alive – alive with the enzymes, antioxidants, natural sugars and
fibers that horses crave and need. Fodder Solutions can provide you with a simple cost effective way to
feed “Dr Green” living feeds every day of the week.
“A Fodder Solutions controlled environment growing cham-
ber produces safe, highly nutritious ready to feed “Dr
Green” sprout mats and results in the following improve-
ments to your feed.”
Sprouting grain increases its moisture content and enzyme
activity. These enzymes work to convert storage compounds
into their more digestible fractions – proteins are converted
to amino acids, starches are converted to simple sugars and
fats and oils are converted to free fatty acids. It is essentially
like feeding “pre-digested” grains.
Even digestive work requires burning of energy, so by feed-
ing sprouted grains there is a net energy saving. This is an important consideration for performance of
horses in heavy work. Anything that reduces the metabolic heat of digestion will reduce the net heat
load on that animal.
Richard and Marisse Kinnon of “Outamorella Station” Longreach have been using their Fodder Solu-
tions unit for two years now and have never looked back. Richard runs around 15 coach horses out of
his stable in Longreach towing a Cobb & Co. coach for the local tourism industry. Each horse is in
full work, running around 30km each, on a day about roster. There is a lot of bitumen work involved
and the horses need to be in peak physical condition.
Richard says, “I have been using this system for two years now and still cannot believe the benefits. My
feed costs are down two thirds on what they were two years ago and my horses are just a ball of health.
I feed 15 horses in the paddock at a rate of 5kg of fresh barley fodder per horse twice daily; the only
other feed they are getting is low grade grass hay. Rain, hail or shine I can confidently feed spring
fresh green feed daily without worrying about performance levels. Even my farrier has said their hoof
condition is excellent, with no cracks or signs of lameness.”
The team at Fodder solutions understands that each horse is unique so we have approached one of
Queensland’s leading animal nutritionists to independently research, test and formulate our sprouts.
The results are in! Recent tests showed that 8.75kg of barley sprouts provides an average of over 110%
of the recommended daily amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, zinc and
iron.

Now the technology is available so can start going your own Equine Sprouts today!
Trainers are experiencing that EBS (Equine Barley Sprouts) provides an opportunity to maximize a horse’s health
and performance, to a degree not previously possible. Grown within a controlled environment facility, you can
produce superior nutritional feeds. Sprouting requires very little water and no arable land.
EBS contains the following nutritional qualities:
• 18 amino acids, including the 8 essential ones.
• Leaf proteins which promote cell metabolism.
• A wide spectrum of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants.
• Buffer minerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium
which help to maintain a healthy pH level.
• Chlorophyll which assists in stimulating tissue growth
and production of red blood cells.
• Anti-drug prevention and control of gastric ulcers.
• Anti-inflammatory properties.
FODDERsolutions has developed a special highly profitable technology of growing highly nutritious fresh grass from cereal
seeds and grains in a totally organic environment without pesticides, herbicides or other harmful chemicals. By sprouting seeds
and grains such as barley, corn, sunflowers, fenugreek, ect, you can customise your own feed rations to grow fresh green fodder
We all know how nutritious sprouts are for humans,
so you know how much your horses will appreciate sprouts.
Sprouted Barley provides essential amino acids and vitamins which encourages the early
breeding of thoroughbreds. (D Cuddeford. PhD Royal School of Veterinary Studies)
⇒ EBS is acknowledged to have anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory and anti colic properties in equines.
⇒ EBS is high in digestible fibre, which is digested into volatile fatty acids and readily absorbed into the bloodstream as a source of energy.
⇒ EBS Fed daily maintains a horse’s well being by aiding the digestive process and supplying high quality protein and energy. This allows a horse in
work to maintain the bulk essential for extending each racing campaign, so maximizing returns for both trainers and owners.
⇒ EBS gives exceptional growth rates in yearlings.
⇒ EBS gives higher milk production in lactating mares.
⇒ Trials have shown that, in the fodder produced by fodder solutions, there are higher concentrations of the minerals important for animal nutrition
than were measured in the unsprouted grain.
⇒ EBS Fed daily replaces essential fluids lost in work and keeps the horse hydrated and in good health, especially in regions where heat causes ex-
cessive loss of fluids from sweating.
⇒ EBS Fed after extreme exertion (racing, trialing or fast work) is a great feed for a horse because it is cool, moist, easily digested and packed with
nutrients that help pick the horse’s energy levels up quickly without making them fizzing and hot.
⇒ EBS Fed daily maintains a horse’s well being by aiding the digestive process and supplying high quality amino acid proteins and cool energy.
Veterinary studies of racehorses have exposed the serious problem of ulceration of the horse's digestive organs, particularly when
fed on concentrated feed diets such as grain. Trainers have found that sprouted barley fed daily over 3 months prevents ul-
cers in a horse. EBS is an ideal fresh feed as it is alkaline and the digestion of it helps neutralize excess acidity in the horse's
stomach. EBS can therefore replace expensive ulcer-treating drugs which may have many detrimental side-effects. If drug
treatment for ulcers is stopped, the ulcers most likely recur by race day and inhibit the horse’s performance. EBS is, the cost
effective drug free ulcer treatment, that can help prevent ulcers in your horses.
