If there is one thing that several guitarists of yester years have learned from the most, it would
arguably have to be guitar tab or tablature. If you have been playing guitar for a while then you
would probably be already familiar with this notation method, and may in fact have been already
using it yourself. If you are as yet unfamiliar with what tab is and are eager to find out, you have
come to the right place! Here I will give you a basic primer on guitar tab, which should give you
enough information for further study.
Guitar tab is a notation method in which the notes on the guitar fretboard are graphically
represented on a grid. From left to right, the grid approximates the fretboard of the guitar from the
headstock towards the body. Horizontal lines symbolize the strings of the guitar, and vertical lines
represent the guitar frets. On the strings of this graphical representation are placed numbers that
represent the fingers that will be used to fret the note. Guitar tablature therefore gives you the
following information: where the note will fall on the fretboard and what fingers you will use to fret
the note.
Now as you can imagine, this makes for quite an easy notation system to understand, which is
why most beginners are unsurprisingly drawn to tablature as a learning tool. This makes it
possible for beginners to learn their favorite songs quickly, since there is a wealth of guitar
tablature out there which covers most of the current popular songs. In one sense, guitar tablature
can help a beginner get better a lot quickly, since he or she can immediately start playing even
fairly complicated parts without having to learn how to actually read music.
The downside to all this however is that guitar tablature is a relatively limited form of musical
notation, particularly when compared to standard notation. Guitar tablature for instance only
specifies the notes to be played and the fingering, and doesn't really give you information relating
to subtleties of expression and timing that you can use while playing. While learning guitar
tablature will definitely teach you a few things, you will want to augment this rudimentary
knowledge later on by exploring traditional learning methods.
You should also keep in mind that most of the guitar tablature that you find on the Internet is
almost always transcribed by guitar players such as yourself. This is not necessarily a bad thing,
although you do have to be careful about guitar tablature that has been less than accurately
transcribed.
While guitar tablature will definitely get you a long way at the beginning, this should be seen as a
means to an end. Use it as a starting point for further exploration into the various aspects of guitar
learning, and you will be well on your way to a great future as a capable guitarist.
Playing guitar is a skill which can be mastered with patience, perseverance and proper guidance.
Following the correct approach will keep you interested while learning and make you a master
fast. If you are looking for a tutorial which answers all your queries related to learning guitar and
