      SAY: Look at the photos on pages 2-3. How many of the things in the photos can
      you name?

Write how you would introduce the person sitting next to you to your friend.
       SAY: How would you introduce the person sitting next to you to your friend?



Lesson 3
Pronouns
Write a sentence about the person sitting next to you. Underline the pronoun.
       SAY: What pronoun would you use to describe the person sitting next to you?



Lesson 4
Present Tense Be
Write a sentence about where you are from. Underline the verb be.
       SAY: Where are you from? How would you tell me about where your friend is
       from?



Lesson 5
Personal Experience
Write about how you felt on your first day of school.
       SAY: How did you feel on your first day of school? Were you happy? Were you
       scared? Write about it.

Write a sentence or two that describes something about you.
       SAY: What would you say about yourself to a friend? Write about it.

Write about something you read in your classmate’s paragraph.
       SAY: What would you like to tell your classmate about his or her paragraph?
       Write about it. Remember to be constructive in your comments.

Describe how you feel about speaking in front of a group.
       SAY: How do you feel about speaking in front of a group? Are you nervous? Do
       you feel confident? Write about it.

Write about one way you use numbers in your life.
       SAY: How do we use numbers? Do you use numbers to pick teams for a game?
       Do you use numbers when you make an after-school snack? Describe one way
       you use numbers.

Description
Describe what is happening in the illustration on page 39.
       SAY: Look at the illustration on page 39. What do you think Carmen, Maria, and
       Liliana are doing? Describe what you see.



Lesson 12
Syllables
Write a sentence that uses at least one word that has more than one syllable.
       SAY: Put your hand under your chin and say the word cat. How many times does
       your chin drop? Now say your name. How many times does your chin drop when
       you say your name? Now say the word vocabulary. How many syllables does
       vocabulary have?


Lesson 13
Plural Nouns
Write a sentence that describes more than one of something. Use the correct form of the
noun.
       SAY: To form the plural of most nouns, you simply add –s or –es. For nouns
       ending in y, you change the y to i and add –es. How would you make the object
       you chose plural?

Activate Prior Knowledge
Write something you already know about Maria.
       SAY: The students are in math class. Do you think Maria likes math class? Why
       or why not?

Write about the first time you tried something new.
       SAY: How did you feel the first time you tried something new? Were you scared?

       signs you saw on your way to school today. Write a description of it.



Lesson 18
Giving Feedback
Write about one of the student presentations you saw today.
       SAY: Choose one of the presentations you saw today. What did you like about the
       presentation? What would you improve about it?



Lesson 19
Description

Write a description of one of the objects in the classroom.
       SAY: Turn to page 8. What objects in the picture are in our classroom? Choose
       one object and describe it.


Lesson 20
Steps in a Process
Write briefly about how to play your favorite game.
       SAY: What games do you like to play? How would you tell a friend how to play
       the game with you? Write at least three steps to playing the game.

Describe an object one of your classmates owns. Use a possessive to show ownership.
       SAY: Point to something your classmate owns. How would you describe that
       object as belonging to your classmate? Write about it using a possessive.



Lesson 23
Personalize
Use what you already know to describe something that might be in a classmate’s
backpack.
      SAY: Think about some of the things you bring to school. Do you think your
      classmate might need some of the things you bring to school? Now make a guess
      about what might be in a classmate’s backpack.



Lesson 24
Comprehension Check
How can Carlos tell Mr. Gomez has his sister’s backpack?
      SAY: Read Carlos’s Backpack. How do you think Carlos can tell that Mr. Gomez
      has his sister’s backpack? Write what you know.



Lesson 25
Compare and Contrast
Describe one thing that is the same and one thing that is different about your backpack
and a classmate’s backpack.
        SAY: Look at your own backpack and at the backpack of the person sitting next
        to you. When you compare, you tell how they are similar. When you contrast, you
        tell how they are different.

       Write a description of it.

Word Problem
Turn to page 70. Write a word problem like the one in Oh Please, Carlos!
       SAY: In the real world, many math problems have words in them. Write your
       own word problem. Then have your partner try to solve it.



Lesson 29
Use What You Know
Describe how you can use what you know to solve a word problem.
       SAY: Turn to page 70. How do you think the class can use what they know to
       solve the problem? Write about it.



Lesson 30
Steps in a Process
List the steps you would use to solve a word problem.
        SAY: It is often easier to do things when you follow steps in order. What steps
        would you use to solve a math problem? Write a list of the steps in order.
