Comprehensive HIV/TB Services in Ethiopia
The USAID-funded Ethiopia HIV/AIDS Care and Support Program,
a national expansion of services for 64 million people, offers
comprehensive HIV/TB services using an approach based on
case managers, outreach, training, and district and health center
strengthening. More than 4,000 outreach workers have been trained
in community and household HIV prevention, care, and treatment.
This helped make it possible to counsel nearly 1 million individuals
and test them for HIV in 2008.
Two hundred and fifty health centers offer antiretroviral therapy
(ART), and the number of individuals on ART rose from 15,000 to
22,090 between 2007 and 2008. While the national rate of patients
lost to follow-up exceeds 20 percent, this program has maintained
that rate at below 5 percent—a dramatic and crucial difference.
