How can I get my picky eater to eat whole grains?

For meatloaf, hamburgers, or other recipes that call for breadcrumbs, use crumbs from crackers or bread made with whole grain. Pour some dry, bite-size whole grain cereal into a bag, to take along with you as a snack during your busy day. Enjoy low fat whole grain crackers or baked tortilla chips instead of potato chips. Pop popcorn. Add oats to cookies or other desserts.

Here are a few ways to find whole grain foods when you shop:

Check the list of ingredients. Look for the word “whole” in front of a grain to be named first on the label’s ingredient list, such as “whole wheat,” if you want to get a food that is high in whole grains. See the example below: INGREDIENTS: Whole wheat flour, soybean and/or canola oil, salt.

Look for the words “whole grain” or “whole wheat” on the package.
