					This is a document that is designed to assist a company in determining the scope of a
business project. This document will assist the company in defining key project scoping
requirements, such as, who is responsible for the project, schedule, costs, risks,
opportunities, communication, quality, procurement, contracts, and assumptions.
Additionally, it can be customized to provide for any industry-specific language that may
be necessary. This document should be used by small businesses or other entities that
want to clarify and establish project goals and objectives.

     document that should be updated as the project progresses. Instructions for completing this template are
     provided in gray text and enclosed in brackets. Highlighted text should be should be replaced with your
     own information. Some sections may also include examples, which will be in black italicized text. All
     gray and italicized text should be deleted prior to publishing this document.)

1. Introduction
1.1 Purpose of This Document
(Define the purpose of this document. Explain who would be interested in this document, why this
document should be used, and when.)

The purpose of this document is to detail the Project Scope for the expansion of Company
ABC’s North facility. This document provides information pertaining to the Sponsor, Manager,
team, costs, schedule, risks and opportunities, communication requirements, quality
expectations, procurement, contractual information, and assumptions. Any individual involved
as part of this project team will have access to this document for reference.

1.2 Who is Responsible for this Document?
(Define the responsible person for this document, if approvals are required, and when, if any, deviations
are allowed.)

The Project Manager assigned to this Project is responsible for the creation and maintenance of
the Project Scope. Questions regarding this document should be directed to the assigned Project
Manager. The Project Scope will be reviewed and approved by the Project Sponsor. No
deviations form this plan will be allowed without approval from the Project Sponsor.

2. Project Scope Overview
(Provide a high-level overview of the project purpose, the need for the project, the phases of the project
as required, and information on anything that is excluded from the project.)

Company ABC has decided to expand its North facility in order to house the expected additional
employees to be hired over the next 18 months. This project will be completed in three phases:
Phase A — Facility Design, Phase B — Facility Construction, and Phase C — Facility
Handover. The furnishing of the expansion space is not included in the scope of this project.

3.3 Risks/Opportunities

The primary risks to this project include:
 The North Facility is located in a region prone to tornados typically during the months of
  March through September, which may inhibit construction.

 Other large construction projects are also being conducted in the area, which may result in a
  labor shortage.

The primary opportunities for this project include:
  The North Facility is located in a region where weather is very conducive to quick
  construction, which may shorten construct time.
 The cost of raw materials is declining, which may lead to reduced construction costs.

3.4 Communication Requirements
(Provide a high-level list of communication requirements such as ongoing meetings, required
documentation and specified methodologies)

Phase A: Facility Design:
        1) All team members are required to attend bi-weekly design meetings.
        2) All team members are required to submit weekly status reports.
Phase B: Facility Construction
        1) All team members are required to attend weekly construction meetings.
        2) All team members are required to submit weekly status reports.
Phase C: Facility Handover
        1) All team members are required to attend all handover events.

3.5 Quality Expectations
(Provide information detailing the project quality expectations to include any local and industry-related
regulations/standards.)

ABC Company expects quality work from both its employees and contractors. All local
construction codes must be met, and inspections must be completed as required by local
construction authorities.

3.6 Procurement
(Provide information pertaining to any procurement requirements, such as local purchasing only or
specific required vendors.)

For the expansion of the North facility, contractors are required to purchase material through the
approved vendor system of ABC Company. If a material cannot purchase via a vendor in the
approved vendor system, the Project Manager must then apply to have the material vendor
approved and added into the vendor system.

3.7 Contractual Information
(Provide information pertaining to contracts in place for the project.)

EF Architectural Design Co. has been contracted to complete the design portion of the expansion
of the North Facility.

ZY Construction Company has been contracted to complete the physical construction of the
expansion of the North Facility.

LM Engineering has been contracted to facilitate any engineering needs between EF
Architectural Design Co and ZT Construction Company.

3.8 Assumptions
(Provide a list of assumptions pertaining to the project; these are assumed but not yet verified
statements.)

- Project funding is expected to be approved no later than 10/31/10.
- ABC Company will have staff available to work with any contractor hired for this project.

3.9 Evaluation Methods
(Provide information detailing how the project progress will be evaluated.)

Evaluation of this project is an ongoing process. For each phase of the project, a baseline will be
set the day the phase begins. Following the completion of each phase, the status of each
deliverable will be collected, updated, and analyzed for any variances from the baseline. If any
variance is discovered, a plan will be developed to correct the variance. Once all deliverables in
the phase are met, the progress will be validated by the Project Manager and the Project Sponsor.
Due to the length of Phase B – Facility Construction, it is anticipated it will be broken into sub-
phases for better evaluation.

4. Signatures
(Provide a signature area for the Project Sponsor and Project Manager to both accept and agree to this
document.)

The signatures below signify acceptance of this Project Scope by both the Project Sponsor and
Project Manager. Any alterations to this document will result in a version change and new
signatures. The most recent version will represent the active document.
