What is Eczema
So many ask, what is eczema. This condition is common but has different kinds. There
are many types of skin inflammation or dermatitis but the general term used to describe
them is eczema. This means that if you are told that your condition is an eczema, then
your next question is to know what kind. It could be mild, easily treated or a serious type
which may need a doctors prescription. This condition affects any age group but is
common in infants. Studies show about 80% of infants affected show the condition
before the age of five. By the age of three it will be resolved in half of those infants.

also be triggered by psychological stress. When outbreaks occur, you may feel intense
itching, dry and reddened skin. It may appear differently or vary from you and another.

scratching the itch. This will lead to blisters and a thick crusty skin.

So what is eczema and the types? There are different types and variations of eczema.
Some of them are: Seborrheic Eczema, the cause is unknown but it usually occurs on the
face and on the scalp. The symptoms may be scaly, yellowish and oily patches of skin.
Also inflammation of the face, at the nasal folds and cheek creases. In infants there
might be presence of dandruff.
Atopic Dermatitis: this is the most common form of eczema. It brings on itchy and
inflamed skin, the condition is a chronic skin disease. It varies from time to time, and
may be triggered by different factors such as environment conditions. People with atopic
dermatitis tend to have a family history of allergic conditions.
Nummular Eczema: the symptoms include coin shaped patches, that may be scaling and
crusty. This condition brings on skin irritation and may be extremely itchy. It is an
uncommon type of eczema and occurs mostly in the elderly. The risks of contracting it is
increased, if a family history of asthma and atopic dermatitis is present. This condition is
usually chronic.
Dyshidrotic Eczema: clear deep blisters on the soles of the feet are prevalent, combined
with skin irritation on the palms. This condition is common in warm climates, and
affects both male and female.
Stasis Dermatitis: this occurs in the middle aged and elderly. It is associated with venous
insufficiency which is a circulatory problem. The legs may itch and show discoloration
in reddish-brown. Which may lead to oozing skin lesions and blistering.

What is Eczema and the measures that can be taken to reduce the outbreak of eczema?
You should not bathe for long periods, and don’t take hot showers or baths. The water
should be lukewarm and use mild soap. Then you should apply the moisturizer on the
affected in areas to keep the skin hydrated. Cotton clothing is advisable since it is less
irritating, and whatever clothing is worn, should be loose-fitting. Avoid anything that
cause an allergic reaction or is an irritant, like certain soaps, detergents and foods.
Exercise and meditation can help especially if it is triggered by psychological stress.
Before bedtime, it is advisable to use the moisturizer on affected areas and maintain a
cool sleeping environment. This will reduce or prevent sweating, so there will be less
irritation and itching. Also when doing chores such as dish washing, using a glove would
prevent the harsh soaps and detergents from affecting the skin.
We can prevent future breakouts or significantly reduce the severity. By simply
