                                RYAN SAWYERS

Entering his third season as an assistant coach with the
Rams is Ryan Sawyers. Sawyers was elevated to a full-time
position in 2002 after serving as a part-time coach in 2001.
Sawyers serves as pitching coach and also as first base
coach. He is also in charge of field maintenance and coordi-
nates all the team’s travel arrangements.
In 2002, the Ram pitching staff set numerous team and
individual marks under the tutelage of Sawyers as Shep-
herd posted a 37-12-1 overall mark and advanced to the
    NCAA II North Atlantic Regionals.
Sawyers’ college experience began at Allegany College of Maryland where he helped
the Trojans to the JUCO World Series in 1997. Following his sophomore season, Sawyers
transferred to West Virginia Wesleyan where he completed his collegiate career.
While at Allegany, Sawyers led the 1998 team with 55 strikeouts in 42 innings and was
    second in wins with seven.
At Wesleyan, Sawyers led the WVIAC in 1999 with 81 strikeouts in 65 innings which
was good enough to rank him 16th nationally. His 2.51 ERA also made the national charts
at 44th in NCAA II. Sawyers’ impressive statistics and 6-2 record earned him WVIAC
Pitcher of the Year honors in 1999. He finished his career with 18 wins and 201 strikeouts
    in 185 innings.
Sawyers played one season of professional ball with the Chillicothe Paints of the Frontier League (Independent A) in 2000. In August 2002, he
was named as the head coach of the Front Royal Cardinals of the Valley League (an NCAA certified summer collegiate wooden bat baseball
    league).

Miller will assist with the outfielders and help with the day-to-day operations of the team.
A WVIAC Second Team All-Conference choice in 2002, Miller was a standout on the diamond for the Rams from
1999-2002. He ranks as one of the top pitchers in school history and shares Ram pitching records for most starts in
a season (13, 2002, with Brian Renner) and most career appearances (52 with Jimmy Jackson). He also was a starter
in the outfield as a senior. Miller batted .354 with 35 hits, 24 runs scored, and 18 RBI. He also added eight doubles,

Fairfax Field is one of the premier NCAA Division II baseball fields in the East.

Fairfax Field was officially given its name on November 17, 1923 in ceremonies as part of a football game between Shepherd and Potomac State. The
field served both the Shepherd football and baseball programs until the football team relocated to Ram Stadium exclusively in 1960.
The field has served as a football practice field, an intramural field, and even a softball field over the years. That all changed when Wayne Riser took
over as head coach of the Shepherd baseball program in 1991.
Riser transformed the multi-purpose field into one of the premier Division II baseball facilities in the East. Among the changes made under Riser are
the construction of an outfield fence, dugouts, a press box, storage buildings, and the addition of a scoreboard and permanent seating. A turf maintenance
plan was developed and implemented, which includes a state-of the-art underground irrigation system. A work-in-progress, Fairfax Field is constantly
undergoing changes and upgrades. This year a new storage facility building and bullpens were added in the left field corner. Other recent major changes
include the addition of a new scoreboard in centerfield and a new batting cage complex with three additional cages.
The facility set a NCAA II North Atlantic Region attendance record in 1997 when Shepherd College hosted the regional tournament.

                                                FUND RAISING
Shepherd College head coach Wayne Riser has spent a tremendous amount of time and energy into fund raising for the Ram baseball
program. Fairfax Field and other facets of the baseball program are a constant work-in-progress. Each season new improvements have been
implemented to improve the Shepherd baseball facilities and the program. Recent improvements include a new storage facility and bull pen area,
a centerfield scoreboard, and batting cage complex.
