Hinduism
Basic Beliefs
• All things in the Universe are of the
  same essence as godthis belief in
  the unity of god and creation is
  called monism
• The world we observe is an illusion-if
  people accept the illusion they cannot be
  saved
• Souls are reborn over and over
  again-this belief is called
 reincarnation
• The soul never dies
• The soul can be reborn in the body of
  another human being or even an animal
• Dharma-
 Doing one’s moral duty in this life
 so that the soul can be reborn
•Karma -
 The good or bad force
 created by a person’s
 actions
• Nirvana-
 The soul reaches perfect peace
  and reunites with Brahma
• The Hindu god Brahma can be represented
  as a number of gods
  –Vishnu the preserver
  –Siva the destroyer
  –Brahma the creator
Hindus respect all forms of
 life & nature.
•The Caste System
– Is a class system in India deeply interwoven with
  Hinduism
– Their were 5 main class distinctions
    • India’s constitution today outlawed the Caste system
      but it still has great influence
• Sacred Text-
 Vedas, Upanishads

• Leadership-
  Brahmin Priests

The progress of the soul depends on
 the life a person leads.
Good is rewarded.
Evil is punished.
Salvation comes from
 knowing-

 Truths
 2. The Eightfold Path
  The Four Noble
      Truths
1. All Human Life
involves suffering and
sorrow
2. The desire for a life of
pleasure causes suffering
and sorrow
3. Renouncing desire frees
people from suffering and
helps their souls attain
Nirvana
4. The Eightfold Path leads
to attainment of Nirvana
  The Eightfold Path
1. Right Views-seeing life as it
   really is
2. Right Intentions-living a life
   good-will
3. Right Speech-avoid lies and
   gossip
4. Right Action-being law
   abiding
5. Right Living-avoiding
   harming others
6. Right Effort-seek to prevent
   evil
7. Right Mindfulness-constants
   self-awareness
8. Right Concentration-
   meditative mind
