LET US PRAY…

God of faithfulness,

as this new school year begins it brings new projects,

new possibilities and a fresh start.

We are in need of your energy and renewed hope.

We wonder what positive change we will be able to effect this year

by our words, actions and prayers.

We need your grace to guide our hearts.

We need the power of your Son to rekindle and sustain our passion to be your disciples.

We need the wisdom of your Spirit to see the ever-present possibilities

for change and conversion, for growth and transformation.

Give us the eyes of faith, that we might appreciate each other’s stories in our midst

and have the courage to begin anew.

We ask this prayer in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

CAMPUS MINISTRY/COMMUNITY SERVICE NEWS…

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year! Our Campus Ministry theme this year is “Making

History While Living His Story”. Our liturgies and prayer services will reflect many familiar

stories of faith. We will also make time to share our own stories of faith with each other. As we

journey through this school year together, make it a point to invite God to join you as you write

your own story of faith and development.

If you are new to the Seton Community or a returning student, you are cordially invited to join

Campus Ministry/Community Service this year.

We meet on Tuesdays after school in Room 117. If you are creative, artistic, enjoy helping

others, like to sing, read, plan, want to meet new people or learn new skills, then you will want to

make time for Campus Ministry and Community Service. If you have questions, please contact

Mrs. Linz at 471-2600, ext. 120 or at linzj@setoncincinnati.org.

Our opening school liturgy will take place on September 10 at 10:00 a.m. in Seton’s

Performance Hall. The theme for this liturgy is “Opening Your Story of Faith”. We welcome

Fr. Jim Walsh from St. Dominic Parish to preside at our opening liturgy. All are welcome to

attend.

Please keep in your prayers the seniors who will be making a retreat this month and their

respective retreat team. Forty seniors will attend Kairos #45 at the Moye Spiritual Life Center in

Melbourne, Kentucky. The retreat team has been planning over the summer to make the retreat

experience the best that it can be. Thanks to all those involved.

Special thanks to all who prayed for our summer mission trips. They were very exciting,

rewarding and beneficial experiences for all. Our mission trips included Guatemala, New

Orleans, Covington, Kentucky and Hindman, Kentucky.

As we begin a new school year we are gearing up for Adaptive Aquatics, Adopt-A-Class, ESPY

Big/Little Sister program, Habitat, Math Discovery, visiting the elderly in nursing homes and

much more.

On Friday, September 11 a number of our students will be attending Mayerson’s 12th annual

student service leadership workshop at the University of Cincinnati. This is a great opportunity

for students to learn about service activities and programs at other schools and an opportunity for

our students to share our community service projects. Seton students will be presenting the

Adopt-A-Class program at the workshop this year. They will detail our involvement with

Roberts Academy and assist other schools in understanding the Adopt-A-Class Program.

Seton High School’s Community Service and Campus Ministry department will be participating

in the “Dining to Donate” Program at Applebee’s Restaurant on Crookshank Road on the first

Wednesday of the month from September 2009 through May 2010. When you present one of

our flyers 10% of the proceeds will be returned to Seton to assist many activities throughout the

year. Remember that carryout orders also apply to the Dining to Donate Program. Please print a

flyer from our homepage or contact S. Sandy at 471-2600, ext. 191 or

howes@setoncincinnati.org. Thank you in advance for your participation in this program.

September’s collection will help fund Rosa’s and Violet’s (the two girls Seton has adopted from

Uganda and Indonesia) education and healthcare needs for the year.

ACADEMICS…

ACTIVATE YOUR EDLINE ACCOUNTS!

Seton High School utilizes a web-based program called Edline to enhance communication

between teachers, students and parents. Edline is a confidential and easy way for teachers

to share student progress online with parents and students. Teachers regularly post

student grades as well as other important class material to the Edline class websites.

An individualized, password-protected website is set up for each student. Separate accounts are

set up for both parents and their daughter to access their daughter’s Edline website. It is

important that all parents activate their accounts using their parent activation code as soon

as possible. In the past, some parents used their daughter’s account to view their daughter’s

progress reports and chose not to activate the parent account. Unfortunately, if parents only

access their daughter’s Edline website through their daughter’s account, they will not be able to

receive e-mails from teachers and group e-mails from Seton’s administration, counselors and

teachers. It is of utmost importance that all parents activate their parent account and include

their e-mail address on their Edline account in order to receive the most up-to-date and current

Seton news.

Accounts already activated? Screen names and passwords remain unchanged from last year for

parents and students in grades 10, 11 and 12.

If you need any assistance setting up your accounts do not hesitate to contact our Edline

Coordinator, Mrs. Lois Childers, at 471-2600, ext. 150 or email childersl@setoncincinnati.org.

Assistance will also be available on Wednesday, September 9 during Parent Information Night in

Seton’s Information Center/Library.

October 14 is Testing Day for freshmen, sophomores and juniors!

Students will take standardized tests during the morning of October 14. Students will be

dismissed by 11:30 a.m. in order for the staff to have a professional in-service opportunity during

the afternoon hours. (Seniors should plan a college visit on October 14.)

Guidance Department

As we begin this new school year, we encourage you to contact your daughter’s counselor if you

have any questions or concerns with which we can assist you. Please see the chart below for the

name of your daughter’s counselor. Counselors will be meeting with students both individually

and in groups throughout the year. This month, freshman groups will focus on orientation to

high school. They will be receiving a pamphlet entitled, “How to Get the Most Out of High

School.” This parallels the parent booklet, “High School Parent Guidebook,” that your daughter

received in her packet at the Freshman Welcome Program. Counselors will also discuss with

students ways to implement their tablets as a study skills tool. Sophomore and junior groups will

prepare students for the PLAN and PSAT tests to be given on October 14. Seniors will focus on

the college admissions process, including taking or retaking the ACT and/or SAT tests. College

5

representatives will be visiting Seton in the next two months as well. Both juniors and seniors

are invited to meet with reps of interest to them. Seniors will have an opportunity to plan a

Career Shadowing Day or a College Visit on Wednesday, October 14. Counselors will continue

to be in touch with parents and students through Edline email.

Latin Department

Seton’s Latin Club will hold its annual Induction into the Seton Latin Club in early October. We

welcome all students, especially the 13 Latin I students, to their study/enjoyment of Latin.

SALVETE!

Seton Student Library Board

The Library Board is seeking new student members for the 2009-2010 school year. Board

activities include planning events (such as the exam prep afternoon, the Twilight party, the

Edible Book contest, etc.), making suggestions for books to be purchased, promoting the library

and reading, and new this year, serving on the All School Reading Committee. Meetings are on

an as-needed basis and are usually held in the morning before school. Interested students should

stop by the library and give their name and homeroom to Ms. Williams-Mitchell.

Academic Team

Seton’s Academic Team competes in the Greater Cincinnati Academic League each Tuesday

afternoon at Cincinnati State from early November through February. It’s a great way to stretch

your mind, meet students from other schools, and work as a team with other Seton students.

Anyone interested should see Mr. Green in Room 132 for more information about practice times

and team details.

STUDENT LIFE…

From the School Nurse: Jennifer Boles, MSN, RN, NCSN

I will use Seton’s website “Student Health” for many communications including health forms

and current community health topics such as H1N1 influenza.

 Absence due to Illness: If a student is absent due to an illness, a parent/guardian must

contact the school office (471-2600) prior to 8:30 a.m. stating the reason for the absence.

Please provide specific information including temperature, student’s primary complaints

(headache, cough, muscle aches, sore throat, diarrhea, vomiting) and if she has been seen

by the doctor. This information is necessary to comply with Ohio Department of

6

Health guidelines and will be kept confidential unless you request the counselor or

teacher be notified.

The timing of an absence is often crucial in order to decrease the spread of disease to

others and to prevent your child from acquiring any other illness while her resistance is

lowered. In general, the following guidelines should be observed:

o She should remain home until she has been fever free (< 100.0 degrees F) for 24

hours without the use of fever reducer medication (acetaminophen – i.e. Tylenol

or ibuprofen – i.e. Advil or Motrin).

o She should not return to school until she is without vomiting and/or diarrhea for a

full 24 hours.

o If prescribed an antibiotic, she should remain home from school until receiving a

full 24 hours of antibiotic therapy and until without fever for 24 hours.

 Emergency Medical Authorization (EMA): If you have not completed the EMA for

2009-2010, please do so as soon as possible. The EMA form is the primary source of

information if a situation should arise and we need to reach you immediately. Having

accurate phone numbers is very important. Please make sure you keep the school

updated with changes in medication, health conditions, or if you change your

home/cell/work number.

 Health Screening: During September, I will focus on conducting vision, hearing and

postural screenings on incoming freshman as recommended by the Ohio Department of

Health.

 Contact Information: Please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Boles with any health-

related questions or concerns at 471-2600, ext. 115 or email bolesj@setoncincinnati.org.

Thank you for your support and best wishes for a healthy school year.
