PERSANTINE AND/OR ADENOSINE NUCLEAR STRESS TESTING
The majority of stress tests are performed by exercising on a treadmill, however some people are unable to
exercise due to medical problems or other issues. In that case, an IV stress test can be performed. These studies
are done by giving a medication that is designed to reproduce the events that occur in a patient’s heart with
This medication is given to dilate (expand) the coronary arteries, in a manner similar to that which would
happen during vigorous exercise. Arteries that become narrow by cholesterol build up will not respond as
readily to the medication as will normal arteries. The nuclear medicine pictures that are taken of the heart will
show this difference between the normal and abnormal arteries. Because this difference may be subtle, two sets
of pictures will need to be taken for comparison. One set will be done prior to the stress medication infusion
and one after the stress medication. You may be asked to perform some light exercise such as walking slowly
on a treadmill or leg exercises while the stress medication infuses. The entire procedure takes approximately 3
Persantine/Adenosine can occasionally cause side effects. Typically these are mild and usually last just a few
minutes. The most common side effects are fatigue, lightheadedness, nausea, headache, chest pain and
The accuracy of this test will be affected by the consumption of caffeinated and decaffeinated products. This
includes coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, colas, Mountain Dew, Mello Yello, Dr Pepper, and many “energy
drinks”. Please do not consume these after midnight before your scheduled appointment. Certain medications
will also interfere with this test and should not be taken for 24 hours prior to the test. This includes Anacin,
Extra-Strength Excedrin, No-Doz, Cafergot, Fiorinal and Wigraine. Please read labels on medications and
drinks because even some waters now have added caffeine.
If you have asthma, or use Theophylline, Theodur, Aminophylline, or inhalers because of wheezing,
please notify your doctor as this test may not be appropriate for you.
You may take all your other medications.
