      01. Introduction
A hospital information system (HIS) is an integrated information system that has been designed to
support healthcare services such as administration, medical, and financial services in healthcare
organizations. A HIS is a large computerized database primarily used to store and communicate
patient and administrative information. A HIS can be composed of one or more information
systems such as a laboratory information system (LIS), practice management (PM), electronic
medical records (EMR), computerized physician order entry (CPOE), and pharmacy information
system (PIS). The HIS is an emerging tool in the healthcare arena for the efficient delivery of high-
      quality services in healthcare organizations.

Healthcare expenditure in the US has been the highest in the past decade compared to other
countries in the world. The major reason behind such growth is the increase in health insurance
and reimbursement schemes for healthcare IT solutions. The depression of 2008–2009 slowed the

healthcare organizations’ services in the US.

One of the main drivers of the HIS market in the US is the healthcare reform initiatives brought in
by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. The HITECH
Act is a part of the US$787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The
HITECH Act, signed into law by President Barack Obama in February 2009, apportioned up to
US$27 billion in stimulus funds to accelerate health IT adoption in the US. Another driver for the HIS
market in the US is the improvement in efficiency, both in terms of keeping patients’ records and
clinical care and patient safety at healthcare organizations. It has helped in reducing medical
errors and also improved the way healthcare services are delivered to patients. Moreover, HIS
has helped in automating the process of collecting, collating, and retrieving patients' clinical
and non-clinical information in healthcare organizations. Thus, hospitals using
