02. Introduction
Secure sockets layer (SSL) is an encryption technology created by Netscape for secure and
authentic communication between a web server and a web browser. The extended-validated
(EV) SSL certificate is a sub-category of SSL technology and is characterized by extensive
verification of the requesting entity's identity. The identification is much more exhaustive than
that required for normal SSL certificates. For an end-user, the visual aspect of an EV SSL
certificate is that the URL address bar turns green when the EV SSL is used. A display next to the
green bar will toggle between the organization name listed in the certificate and the certificate
authority. These certificates either provide stronger cryptography or include specific policy
identifiers so that EV-aware software can recognize them. This digital certificate establishes the
identity and authenticity of a company or a merchant so that online shoppers can trust that the
website is secure and reliable.
