T he first explosion was real. On July 22 the largest dynamite blast in history to date sent rocks flying sky-
ward and obliterated Henderson’s Point in nearby Kittery. The second was a media explosion that rocked
the planet. All eyes focused on Portsmouth, New Hampshire in August 1905 when Teddy Roosevelt helped
broker an end to the Russo-Japanese War here. The third explosion is less known, but had a powerful effect.
In 1905 the corpse of John Paul Jones was discovered under the streets of Paris. Jones, one of the best known
“American” revolutionaries in the world has since become identified with Portsmouth, NH. How? Come see.

TEMPLE ISRAEL OF PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE
                      100TH ANNIVERSARY

T emple Israel of Portsmouth, New Hampshire celebrates its centennial this year. Founded in
1905 by 26 families, it has grown to a vibrant community of 289 families, and it continues
to grow. Portsmouth has long had a Jewish community, as the first Jewish family came in 1789,
but it was not until 1905 that twenty-six families came together to found the Temple of Israel,
a name later shortened to its present form in 1942, with Mr. Harry Sussman as its president. In
1911, the congregation purchased the First Methodist Church on State Street as a formal site
for their temple. Over its first hundred years, the Temple Israel grew, becoming the “center of
Jewish education, worship, and community in the New Hampshire and Southern Maine
Region.” From the initial twenty-six families, Temple Israel now boasts a membership of 289
families, and it includes the region’s only Jewish preschool. As it marks its centennial, Temple
Israel has embarked on a Centennial Campaign to make sure that the next century is as vibrant
and successful as its first one.
