U1 UFOs: Do You Want To Believe?

Part A Oral Practice
A. What?! Has she lost her mind?
B. You must have been seeing things.
C. It’s staring me in the face.
D. Actually, I couldn’t be better.
E. No, I don’t believe in them at all.
1. ( A ) Speaker: Jenny says she is going to swim to China.
Answer: What?! Has she lost her mind?
2. ( B ) Speaker: I’m sure I saw a UFO in the sky late last night.
Answer: You must have been seeing things.
3. ( E ) Speaker: Do you think that ghosts really exist?
Answer: No, I don’t believe in them at all.
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1.What kind of vehicle is this?
2.What do you think is about to happen?
3.Do you think this would be an exciting thing to see?
4.If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
The vehicle in the picture is a spacecraft – a space shuttle, to be exact. It’s hard to tell
what’s happening here, but maybe the space shuttle is about to launch. This would be
a very exciting thing to see, I imagine. However, I don’t think anybody would be this
close to the shuttle when it launches. The shuttle is supported by a tower, and there is
a lot of smoke or steam to the left of it.

Picture 2:
1. What is this person’s job?
2. What is he or she doing?
3. What do you think this would feel like?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
This person is obviously an astronaut – an American astronaut I guess, as nobody else
has been on the moon so far. The astronaut is standing on the surface of the moon,
looking towards the camera. It must be a strange but amazing feeling to stand on the
moon. The moon’s surface here is grey and featureless and it looks like it is covered
in fine dust.

U2 Get Plurking!

Part A Oral Practice
A. I sort of thought she might be.
B. No more than three times a day.
C. I wish you every happiness.
D. No. He’s always keeping secrets from me.
E. It looks kind of tired now.
1. ( B ) Speaker: How often should I take these pills?
Answer: No more than three times a day.
2. ( A ) Speaker: As it happens, Sally is really angry with us.
Answer: I sort of thought she might be.
3. ( D ) Speaker: Did you know that Dave has a new girlfriend?
Answer: No. He’s always keeping secrets from me.
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1.What is this man doing?
2.Why do you think he is doing this?
3.Where is the man?
4.If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
The man is using a laptop computer. Perhaps he is catching up on some work. Then
again, he could be typing an email message or even plurking. It looks like the man is
sitting in an underground train station. Perhaps there is wireless Internet access in the
station. The station looks very, very clean. This makes me think that it could be a very
new one.

Picture 2:
1. What are these girls doing?
2. How do they seem to be feeling?
3. What do you think they are looking at?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
These girls are using a desktop computer, and both of them are looking at the screen.
Both of the girls look happy, and seem very interested in what they are doing. They
could be looking at anything, but the girl on the right is using the mouse, so maybe
she is showing something to the other girl. There are some pictures on the wall behind
them, so maybe the girls are in a classroom.

U3 Going Digital

Part A Oral Practice
A. Let’s eat out instead of cooking.
B. Yes, I get it. Thanks a lot!
C. The red one. Have I got that right?
D. They look kind of angry.
E. He fast-forwarded the tape.
1. ( B ) Speaker: Now do you see how to do this?
Answer: Yes, I get it. Thanks a lot!
2. ( C ) Speaker: OK. Now, which button should you press next?
Answer: The red one. Have I got that right?
3. ( A ) Speaker: What shall we cook for dinner tonight?
Answer: Let’s eat out instead of cooking.
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1.Who do you think these people are?
2.What do they seem to be doing?
3.Why do you think they are dressed this way?
4.If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
I think these people probably work in a factory where computers or other digital
equipment is made. They seem to be looking at the object one of them is holding. I
guess that this object is a computer part or something like that. They are all wearing
the same thing – a special kind of suit made of plastic. They probably wear these suits
because the area they work in has to be kept perfectly clean. This definitely looks like
a ―high-tech‖ place.

Picture 2:
1. What is happening here?
2. Who might these people be?
3. What do you think the speaker is talking about?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
This looks like some kind of lecture or speech. The people in the audience don’t look
like young students – perhaps they are businesspeople or scientists at a seminar. It’s
impossible to tell what the speaker is talking about, but I can see some images
projected onto a big screen behind her. The lecture hall looks very nice – much nicer
than the ones at my university!

U4 The Positive Side Of Online Games
Part A Oral Practice
A. As a matter of fact, it is.
B. Then she’ll probably end up failing it.
C. It enabled me to fix the car.
D. I know. He’s so old school!
E. Yes, but he’s turned into a nice young man.
1. ( D ) Speaker: Grandpa doesn’t even know how to use a computer!
Answer: I know. He’s so old school!
2. ( E ) Speaker: Hank was very naughty as a child, wasn’t he?
Answer: Yes, but he’s turned into a nice young man.
3. ( B ) Speaker: Jill isn’t going to do any studying for the big test.
Answer: Then she’ll probably end up failing it.
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1.What is this boy doing?
2.What kind of game do you think he is playing?
3.How does he seem to feel?
4.If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
The boy is playing a computer game – an online game, perhaps. Whatever game he is
playing, the boy is using a joystick to play it. It must be quite exciting to play, as the
boy looks very pleased with himself. Perhaps he has just won the game or killed some
monsters. The picture is a little strange, as there is nothing else in the room and
everything is white. This makes me think it was set up for the camera.

Picture 2:

1. What are these children doing?
2. What are they using to do this?
3. How do the children seem to feel?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
These two children are playing some kind of video game. They aren’t using a
computer; they’re using some kind of games machine – like a Playstation. Both of the
children look excited, and they seem really interested in the game. The boy has raised
his fist, so the girl is probably doing well in the game. There is nothing in the
background in this picture, so perhaps the whole scene was staged.

U5 Hooked On Farmville

Part A Oral Practice
A. Yes; he’s really into music.
B. I don’t see the point of doing that.
C. To be honest with you, it tastes pretty bad.
D. She had a good point, you know.
E. Please do me a favor and finish them.
1. ( B ) Speaker: We could drive to Taipei instead of taking the train.
Answer: I don’t see the point of doing that.
2. ( A ) Speaker: Wow! Your father has so many CDs!
Answer: Yes; he’s really into music.
3. ( C ) Speaker: So, what do you think of the soup I made?
Answer: To be honest with you, it tastes pretty bad.
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1.What is this woman doing?
2.Why do you think she is doing this?
3.Do you think this would be fun? Why or why not?
4.If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
This woman is playing a game I’ve heard about – it’s a popular online game called
FarmVille. She is probably playing this game because she has nothing else to do and
she likes playing it. Personally, I don’t really enjoy playing online games. If I have
free time, I don’t like to spend it sitting in front of a computer. The woman seems to
be in an office, as I can see lots of files and books in the picture. Perhaps she should
be working instead of playing games!

Picture 2:
1. What is this woman doing?
2. What do you think her job is?
3. What do you think might be happening today?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
This woman is also using a computer. It looks like she is typing something. She may
be a secretary or some kind of researcher, as she appears to be in some kind of library
or large office. Today is probably the woman’s birthday, as there is a birthday cake
sitting next to her. I can also see some balloons floating behind the woman. It does
seem strange that nobody is eating the cake, though.

U11 Let’s Go Go-Karting!

Part A Oral Practice
A. Yes; he said he’s willing to help us.
B. You might get into trouble if you do.
C. Only Formula One, I believe.
D. Well, she’s going to give it a shot anyway.
E. Let’s take one more, just in case.
1. ( A ) Speaker: Did you talk to your brother about our problem?
Answer: Yes; he said he’s willing to help us.
2. ( D ) Speaker: I don’t think Sally can beat Jim at tennis.
Answer: Well, she’s going to give it a shot anyway.
3. ( B ) Speaker: I’m going to sneak into the teacher’s office.
Answer: You might get into trouble if you do.
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1.What is taking place here?
2.What do you know about this kind of car?
3.Do you think this would be a fun thing to do? Why?
4.If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
This is a picture of a car race. The cars in the picture look like Formula One cars. I
don’t know much about them, but I do know that they are very expensive and can go
very, very fast. I think I would be terrified if I was in one of these cars, but I would
like to sit in one. The drivers of these cars have to wear a lot of safety gear, including
special helmets. The track the cars are racing on looks wet, which makes things even
more dangerous.

Picture 2:

1. What are these people doing?
2. What kind of safety equipment can you see in the picture?
3. Would you like to do this? Why or why not?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.

The answer could be…
These people are climbing a very steep rock face. Actually, I can’t see any kind of
safety equipment in the picture! I know that some people like to climb without ropes
and so on, but it’s very dangerous. I wouldn’t like to do this, but I would like to try
rock-climbing with all the right safety gear – especially ropes and helmets. The
climbers are holding onto a crack in the rock, which looks very dangerous to me.

U 12 Let’s Take A Staycation!

Part A Oral Practice
A. I think I’ll just laze about and do nothing.
B. What I’m trying to say is that you’re rude.
C. I really don’t know how to deal with her.
D. We had a blast!
E. Could you tell me what kind of person he is?
1. ( B ) Speaker: What do you mean by saying I’m ―not very nice‖?
Answer: What I’m trying to say is that you’re rude.
2. ( D ) Speaker: So, was the party last night fun?
       Answer: We had a blast!
3. ( A ) Speaker: There’s no school tomorrow. What are you going to do?
Answer: I think I’ll just laze about and do nothing.
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1. Who might the woman in this picture be?
2. What is the woman doing and how does she feel?
3. Why is the woman doing this?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
The woman in this picture is probably a regular, working person who works in an
office or something. Right now, she is lying down in some sort of bathtub. I guess that
the ―bathtub‖ is probably at a Spa. I say this because there are fancy flower petals or
something in the water — maybe this place is expensive. She’s there because she
wants to relax and maybe because she wants to make her skin healthier or better.
Picture 2:
1. What things and how many people can you see?
2. Where do you think these people are, and why?
3. What kind of people are they, and what might they be thinking about?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
I can see two people for sure. And I can see two folding chairs, which the two people
are sitting on. The people and their chairs are on a large area of nice, green grass. I’m
guessing that they are at some nice park on a warm afternoon because there is a lot of
grass. I have no idea what kind of people they are but maybe they are an older couple
who don’t need to work. Maybe they’re just sitting there, thinking about nothing, and
―lazing about‖.

U13 The Future Of Our Feathered Friends

Part A Oral Practice
A. Even if you get 95%, you won’t pass.
B. Tina did — as usual!
C. Sure. What can I do for you?
D. No, I’ve never seen this one before.
E. No, I haven’t. Get rid of it!
1. ( D ) Speaker: Any idea about what kind of bird that is?
Answer: No, I’ve never seen this one before.
2. ( C ) Speaker: Could I ask you for some help?
Answer: Sure. What can I do for you?
3. ( B ) Speaker: Who got the best score on the test?
Answer: Tina did — as usual!
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1. What animals can you see in this picture, and where are they?
2. What do the animals seem to be doing?
3. What do you think will happen right after the events in this picture?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
The animals in this picture are penguins. Penguins live in very cold, remote areas, but
this picture doesn’t seem to be the penguins’ natural home — they seem to be in some
kind of zoo or something like that. Three penguins are standing in line, facing the
water, and another one is already in the water and is swimming. Actually, it looks like
the second penguin is thinking about jumping into the water, too. So, I guess the other
penguins are all going to jump in next.
Picture 2:
1. What kind of animal is this, and how does it look?
2. What is the animal probably doing at this moment?
3. What do you think the animal is looking at?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
The animal is a brightly-colored bird. It’s hard to tell what kind it is or how big it is,
but I think it’s pretty small. It looks very nice and pretty — its colors are green,
yellow, black, and orange. Right now, the bird is sitting on a branch of a tree, I think.
I guess that the bird is about to fly away — it seems to be looking up to the sky. It
may be looking at the clouds and sky and thinking about flying away.

U14 Life-Saving Dogs
Part A Oral Practice
A. Good luck to him. It won’t be easy.
B. I just cannot work well with her.
C. It sniffed out $1000 worth of drugs.
D. I really hope you’re successful!
E. Well, $50 will do.
1. ( A ) Speaker: John starts his new job today!
Answer: Good luck to him. It won’t be easy.
2. ( E ) Speaker: Do you really need me to give you $100?
       Answer: Well, $50 will do.
3. ( B ) Speaker: Why didn’t you want to work with Patty?
Answer: I just cannot work well with her.
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1. What do you see in this picture?
2. Where is this taking place?
3. Why is the animal doing this?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
In this picture, I see a friendly-looking dog jumping over some wooden thing that is
set up on some grass. The dog is sort of brown, and looks pretty happy. There is a toy
or something in its mouth. I guess this is taking place in a park somewhere because
the grass looks short and cut. I think the dog is being trained by its owners to jump
like this so that the dog can be in a competition. Maybe its owner wants the dog to be
in a ―dog show‖, so now it is learning how to jump.
Picture 2:
1. Who and what do you see in this picture?
2. Where is this taking place, and where are they going?
3. Do you think this would be exciting, or scary? Why?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
I can see one man and one boy, as well as a team of dogs that is pulling them. The
man and the boy must be on sleds because the team of dogs are tied to them somehow
and are pulling them. This kind of thing happens on snow, in cold countries, so I
guess this is the north of Canada or Russia, or somewhere cold. But I think this is just
for fun, like a race, because the man has a number on his shirt, just like racers in the
Olympics. So, they are probably just going to the ―finish line‖ of the race. I think this
would be exciting, and I would love to be pulled by a team of dogs!

U15 Wild Things: The Problem With Zoos

Part A Oral Practice
A. Yes, I do. I think they are.
B. That’s just it! It’s an animal.
C. You have a point there.
D. In fact, they may go extinct!
E. He doesn’t stand a chance!
1. ( E ) Speaker: Do you think Mark will win the race?
Answer: He doesn’t stand a chance!
2. ( A ) Speaker: Don’t you think zoos are bad?
Answer: Yes, I do. I think they are.
3. ( C ) Speaker: In body, monkeys are almost the same as people.
Answer: You have a point there.
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1. Who and what do you see in this picture?
2. In what kind of country is this probably happening?
3. Why are the people doing this?
4. How does this picture make you feel?
The answer could be…
I see one big elephant, with a person riding it, and a whole bunch of people behind it,
pulling on some ropes. The ropes are tied around the elephant, which is walking
forward even though the people are pulling it back. This must be happening in some
South-East Asian country with elephants, like Thailand. Maybe this is some sort of
traditional sport, or game, which has been going on for years. I feel really bad for that
elephant because it must be confused and scared.
Picture 2:
1. What kind of animal do you see in this picture?
2. Where is the animal and why is it there?
3. How do you think the animal feels at this moment?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
In this picture, I see one small monkey. The monkey is behind some bars, like a jail,
but I suppose it is in some kind of zoo. The monkey may have been caught and then
taken to this zoo, or maybe it was even born in this zoo and has spent its whole life
there. At this moment, the monkey looks a bit sad or worried. It seems to be looking
at something else that is happening in the zoo, off to its left.

U 21 Think Twice Before Getting The Mark

Part A Oral Practice
A. Your hairstyle is a dead giveaway!
B. He’s not only lazy, but also rude!
C. She couldn’t deal with all the work she had.
D. Well, my friends were all getting them.
E. In any case, you’d better do something.
1. ( C ) Speaker: Do you know why she quit her job?
Answer: She couldn’t deal with all the work she had.
2. ( D ) Speaker: What made you decide to get a tattoo?
Answer: Well, my friends were all getting them.
3. ( B ) Speaker: He’s quite a lazy boy, isn’t he?
Answer: He’s not only lazy, but also rude!
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1. Who can you see in this picture?
2. Why do you think each man is here?
3. What will the man on the left probably do next?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
There are two men in this picture, and they’re sitting inside a medical clinic or staff
room for doctors. I guess this because the man on the left is a doctor. He must be there
because he is working, and he needs to help the other man. The man on the right must
be a patient who needs medical advice or help. Right now, the man on the left is
listening, but next I think he will start giving advice to the man on the right.
Picture 2:
1. What does the woman look like, and what kind of woman is she?
2. Where do you think this woman lives? Why?
3. How do you think this woman felt when her picture was taken?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
This woman is pretty old, with short white hair. What’s interesting is her clothes,
which are a style I’ve never seen before, and her face, which has some paint or
coloring, in a line, across it. She is holding some kind of tool in her left hand. Maybe
she lives close to nature because she is sitting outside, doing some work. She’s
probably not a woman who often goes to the city or works there. Maybe this woman
felt surprised or confused when her picture was taken.

U22 The Plum Rains
Part A Oral Practice
A. And not to mention the cost.
B. On top of that, she called me a loser.
C. Look on the bright side – now you’re free!
D. You can say that again!
E. But it’s raining – you’ll get soaked.
1. ( D ) Speaker: I can’t believe how hot it is today.
Answer: You can say that again!
2. ( E ) Speaker: Maybe I should go out and get some milk.
Answer: But it’s raining – you’ll get soaked.
3. ( C ) Speaker: I got fired today.
Answer: Look on the bright side – now you’re free!
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1. What kind of weather is this?
2. Have you ever experienced a super-typhoon?
3. What should people do to prepare for a typhoon?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
This looks like a typhoon because the wind is blowing the trees hard. Also, there is a
lot of rain. When a super-typhoon comes, many people are afraid because the heavy
rain causes floods. Many people have been killed by floods after typhoons in Taiwan.
Luckily, my family and I are safe in our apartment. Our kitchen flooded once but
nobody got hurt. Before a typhoon arrives my mom and I will go shopping to buy
candles, snacks, and flashlight batteries just in case we need them. The only good
thing about a typhoon is getting the day off school!
Picture 2
1. What makes a rainbow? 2. Why are rainbows considered so special?
3. What is your favorite weather or season?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
There’s a beautiful rainbow in the picture. You can see rainbows when the sun is
shining through raindrops. I think people love rainbows because there are so many
beautiful colors. Also, they are rare. You seldom see rainbows and they don’t last
very long. There are many fairy tales about rainbows so this makes them seem
magical. My favorite weather is sunny, cool weather in spring. Summer weather is too
hot and humid, and the winter is too cold and rainy. For me, spring is just right!

U23 Putting Out The Smoke

Part A Oral Practice
A. I don’t see how that will be possible.
B. Yes I did, thanks to you – your tips were really useful!
C. It’s none of my business after all.
D. The school cracked down on littering.
E. All right. I’ll put it out.
1. ( E ) Speaker: Excuse me, sir! Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the building.
Answer: All right. I’ll put it out.
2. ( A ) Speaker: Can you finish the project by Wednesday?
Answer: I don’t see how that will be possible.
3. ( B ) Speaker: Did you pass your driving test?
Answer: Yes I did, thanks to you – your tips were really useful!
Part B Picture Description-
Picture 1
1. What do you think the woman is doing?
2. What is the man’s job?
3. What might they be discussing?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as possible.
The answer could be…
The woman is in a convenience store and she is talking with the store clerk. She is
holding something in her hands and is looking at it carefully. It might be a product
that she has decided to buy, or she might be asking the clerk a question about it. The
clerk does not seem to be very busy at the moment so perhaps he has time to chat with
the customer. He seems to be relaxed and happy. Maybe the man and woman know
each other and are chatting together.
Picture 2
1. Why do you think these pictures are being shown together?
2. What do these pictures tell us?
3. What do you think a doctor might tell the man?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in more detail.
The answer could be…
There is a picture of a man smoking a cigarette on the left, and on the right, there is an
X-ray of a person’s lungs. Between the two pictures there is a big arrow. The purpose
of the arrow is to show you that smoking turns your lungs black and makes them
unhealthy. Perhaps the X-ray shows lung cancer or a serious lung disease. Of course,
most people know that smoking is bad for one’s health and can even kill you. The
man’s doctor would definitely recommend that he quit smoking.

Part B Picture Description-

1. Why do some people love this form of transportation?
2. Have you ever taken Taiwan’s High-Speed Rail (HSR)? Why or why not?
3. Which forms of transportation do you prefer to use?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
This type of train looks like a modern, high-speed train like Japan’s bullet train or
Taiwan’s High-Speed Rail. High-speed trains are very popular because passengers
can reach their destinations in a very short time. I have never taken Taiwan’s HSR
train but I would love to have the chance. That would be an exciting trip! I usually get
around town by bus or by bicycle. My dad usually uses our car for work so sometimes
my mom will take me somewhere on her scooter. It’s quicker and more convenient
than taking the bus and it’s cheaper than taking a taxi.
Picture 2
1. What kind of car is this and what can it be used for?
2. Where do you think the driver might be going?
3. Describe some advantages and disadvantages of cars like this.
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
This car is an SUV, which means sports utility vehicle. You can drive an SUV if you
want to go on a camping trip. Most people in Taiwan just drive their SUV in the city,
but it’s convenient to have a big car if you want to carry lots of things. Sometimes
people put their bicycles on the roof of the car, and then when they go to the
countryside they can ride their bikes there. One problem with SUVs is they are not
good for the environment. Also, they are not easy to park in the city because they are
so big.

1. What are the men doing?
2. What skills do these men need to do this job?
3. Would you find this kind of job interesting?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
These men look like engineers. Perhaps the men wearing safety hats are building
something or they might be working in a factory. The two men sitting down might be
in charge of using the computers. They have to make sure that everything is under
control. I think to do this kind of job you have to be good at math and science. I am
good at math and I find science very interesting, so I would enjoy being an engineer.
Picture 2
 1. What is the man using?
2. What do you think the purpose of this building is?
3. Do you ever use a computer? How is it different from the one in the picture?
4. If you have more time, please describe the picture in as much detail as you can.
The answer could be…
The man is pressing a key on a computer keyboard. It seems like he does not know
how to use this computer. There are many shelves filled with books next to the
computer so perhaps this is in a library. The computer looks very large but the
monitor is small. Maybe this is an old computer. My computer at home looks very
different from this computer. Mine has a flat screen and the computer is inside a metal
box under my desk.
