Week 1
Mon 8/30 Opening Day—Classes begin @ 6pm
Wed 9/1 Introductions: Today we’ll get to know each other a little
bit and I’ll give you an overview of the course.
**IMPORTANT**
Assignments and readings listed on the day listed on the
syllabus are DUE that day.
In class: Ira Glass on storytelling Parts 1& 2
Week 2
Mon 9/6 Labor Day—No Classes
Tue 9/7 Follow Monday Schedule
In class: Ira Glass on storytelling Parts 3 & 4
Assignment: write a brief response to Parts 1 & 2 of the
video interview with Ira Glass. What kind of advice does he
give us about storytelling? Is there anything that stands out
to you?
Wed 9/8 DUE: Response to Ira Glass on Storytelling
In class: Drafting your narrative. Working with the
metaphor of travel.
Assignment: Revise your initial response to the Ira Glass
interview by adding in your response to Parts 3 & 4.

Week 3
Mon 9/13 Using the metaphor of film to think about revision.
Specifically, we will discuss the role of detail in writing
your narrative.
In-Class: Select a paragraph or two from your narrative to
present in class. Be prepared to talk a little bit about what
you concentrated on and how you decided to approach the
assignment. You should also be prepared to take notes on
what you hear from other people.
Assignment: In about 1-2 pages, write a bit about your
journey to Kutztown, where you came from, and what your
experience has been like thus far. Try to think of specific
details or moments that capture your experience. What’s
been going through your mind as you prepared to come to
Kutztown? Has the experience matches your expectations?
Keep our discussions about the metaphor of travel and Ira
Glass’s interview in mind.
Wed 9/15 In-Class: Select a paragraph or two from your narrative to
present in class. Be prepared to talk a little bit about what
you concentrated on and how you decided to approach the
assignment. You should also be prepared to take notes on

Assignment: Revise your narrative. Expand your narrative
to 2-3 pages. For this draft, you should not focus on
extending your narrative chronologically. Rather, you
should expand your paper by zooming in on particular
moments, details, or feelings. You will be working in small
groups in class. Come to class with at least two copies of
your drafts and prepared to discuss what you focused on in
your revisions.
Week 4
Mon 9/20 Assignment: Choose one paragraph from the middle of
your paper that you like (i.e. not the first or last paragraph)
and seems to capture an important moment in your journey.
Begin a new paper with that paragraph as your first
paragraph. Write ~2 pages beginning from that paragraph.
You will be working in small groups in class. Come to
class with at least two copies of your drafts and prepared
to discuss what you focused on in your revisions.

Wed 9/22 Assignment: Revise the second version of your narrative.
Expand your narrative to 2-3 pages. Come to class with at
least two copies of your drafts and prepared to discuss
what you focused on in your revisions.
Week 5
Mon 9/27 DUE: Paper #1
In class: in class writing: reflecting on your writing.
Assignment: Hand in the final draft of your narrative. In
addition, come to class prepared to present a “trailer” for
your paper. You should plan on talking no more than 2
minutes.
Wed 9/29 DUE: Reflection for Paper #1
In class: Today you will be sharing your reflections with
the rest of the class.
Week 6
Mon 10/4 In class: Working on annotated bibliographies. We will be
discussing a format for putting together annotated
bibliographies and practicing writing annotations using the
Mike Rose essay you read for today.
Read:
Mike Rose, “Crossing Boundaries.” Available on

Wed 10/6 Read:
Min-zhan Lu, “From Silence to Words: Writing as

Wed 10/20 In class: Workshopping annotated bibliographies. We will
be working in small groups revising your annotated
bibliographies.
Assignment: Come to class with a FULL DRAFT of your
annotated bibliography.
Week 9
Mon 10/25 In class: Workshopping annotated bibliographies. We will
be working in small groups revising your annotated
bibliographies AND your reflective narrative.
Assignment: Come to class with a FULL DRAFT of your
annotated bibliography AND your reflective narrative.
Wed 10/27 DUE: Annotated Bibliography + Reflective
Narrative
In class: Today you will be sharing your reflections with
the rest of the class.

Week 10
Mon 11/1 In class: Discussion of critical reflection project. We will
discuss the requirements of the critical reflection project and
ways to combine first person narrative, text analysis, and
commentary.
Assignment: Review the four essays included in your
annotated bibliography. Choose one that you want to work
with for your critical reflection project.
Wed 11/3 Workshop: responding, commenting, and discussing texts
by other writers. How do writers use other writers’ work?
The difference between constructing a conversation and
“providing evidence” or “giving examples.”
Assignment: come to class with a copy of the essay you
will be using for this project.
Week 11
Mon 11/8 In class: Discussion of brining in a third voice to your
reflection.
Assignment: choose at least two excerpts from the essay
you are working with and “write around them” using some
of the strategies we discussed last class. Come to class with
a 1-2 draft.
Wed 11/10 In class: we will discuss foregrounding your own narrative
voice in the project.
Assignment: revise your reflection. Incorporate at least one
additional voice into your draft. Come to class with a 3-4
page draft.

Mon 11/22 DUE: Critical Reflection Project + Reflection
In class: Today you will be sharing your reflections with
the rest of the class.

Mon 11/29 In class: discussion of the final portfolio project.
Assignment: bring to class copies of everything you have
written for this class this semester.
Wed 12/1 Assembling your portfolio
Assignment: come to class with the selections you plan on
including in your final portfolio.

Mon 12/6 In class: sharing drafts of your reflection
Wed 12/8 Last Day of Class
In class: sharing drafts of your reflection
Thur 12/9 DUE: Final Portfolio due in my office by 5:00pm
Week 17
Final Exam Final Exam time: 11:00 AM on Friday,December 17th.
Week There is no final for this class. However, I will be in my
office during the final exam time for this class.
