Adding/Changing Classes
Additions/changes may be made only after securing the approval of the Registrar and can only be done the
first and second class days. Additions/changes are dependent on availability as determined by the Registrar.
Auditing Classes
Auditing of classes is not permitted.
Class Attendance and Conduct
Attendance in class is mandatory. Attendance will be taken, and absences will lower a student’s final grade. It
is absolutely forbidden to eat or drink in the classrooms.
Changing Dates of Quizzes, Exams, etc.
Dates of exams, quizzes, homework, papers, etc. may not be changed, whether earlier or later, except for
illness, and only with a written explanation from a medical doctor. These changes must be approved by the
teacher within three days after the classes missed.
Grading
Teachers at the Spanish-American Institute of International Education grade on a scale of 0 to 100. All work
must be handed in directly to the teacher concerned. Work that is not handed in on schedule and quizzes or
exams that are misses are given a 0, which can have a devastating effect on a course average. For instance,
the average of an A+ (100) and a missed or late assignment (0) is an F (50). So, too a student who has
earned a perfect score (100) on all his/her work, but who misses a midterm valued at 30% of his/her grade will
end up with a 70 average - C-. Anything short of perfection on his/her other work will net him/her a grade of D
or lower.
No classes may be taken on a Pass/Fall basis.

Textbooks
Textbooks for dropped classes must be returned to the Institute as soon as the drop is approved. For those
students changing classes, textbooks for dropped classes must be returned before textbooks for the new
classes will be issued.
