P r e s i d e nts’ Corner
Hello Jaguar Enthusiasts!
I’ve heard this statement many times to describe this past winter “It seems like it’s been such a long
winter, but we’ve had some great events to start 2008.” Dave Meek sponsored the 8th Annual Go Kart
Challenge, which was a big success. I believe we had the largest turn out so far.
The calendar now says that it is Spring, and I for one choose to believe! I’ve heard that several battery
chargers have been hooked up, that little speck of dust whipped off and maybe even a short drive was
had between the snow flakes. We need to get those Katz out to stretch their legs.
Maybe we will see some of you at the Sweetheart Luncheon (April 26). This is sponsored by The
First Husband as he calls himself (John). We can also join the Austin Healey Club for the Spring
Awakening Drive (May 3). Another great event will be Dale Martin’s City Drive (May 24). We go
regardless of the weather, because that’s what we’re all about.
Please check out our website for the complete Calendar of Events. Richard Jones has done a splendid
job of keeping it up to date with that gentle reminding that we haven’t completed the flyer for
our event.
Another event that you may be interested in is the 2008 Rendezvous which is June 5-8, located at the
Wilderness Edge Resort in Pinawa, Manitoba. Always a good time!
If you have an idea for an event that you would like to sponsor, please don’t be shy, we’d love to hear
from you and get it on our event calendar. I just received an invitation from Brian Bergin who lives in
Almelund, MN, to participate in a car show that is centered at the town museum. We will be putting
a flyer together for that and posting it on the website. Thank you Brian!
I would like to thank the Board of Directors for their support, as well all the individuals that sponsor
events. We couldn’t do it without all of the wonderful volunteers.
Please stay safe and in good health and I hope to see many of you at some of the upcoming events.

D– DAY AT S T R O A D S T E R S !
JU
One down, fourteen to go!
The expeditionary forces reported early, zero nine hundred.
We enjoyed morning rations while reviewing the battlefield.
Ben Lewis, Dent Wizard, assembled his weapons. And there
we were, this band of brothers, gathered around Glenn’s
black mid-90s Saab. Teenagers with these pockmarks
wouldn’t dare leave the house … or garage.
This was going to be interesting. Glenn had used masking
tape to highlight at least fifteen prangs and infractions that
this car had accumulated on most every panel in it’s first
dozen years. Good luck!!
Thinking Glenn was most hopeful I said nothing. How the
heck is this poor tech session guest going to impress this
lot of skeptics? Would he manage to flatten a few before
noon? Many seemed totally inaccessible. I for one was not
going to be here that long.
Paintless dent removal is proprietary to Dent Wizard. It’s
a behind-the-lines process to remove your vehicles dents,
dings, creases and hail damage. Their technique pushes
the metal back to its original form without drilling, painting,
or putty. Viola!
Dick Bass discovered and pointed out E-Po
ssum’s Adlai
Stevenson impression. Glenn tried to recal
l his speed when
last out on the road.
While the group munched, commiserated, and told war
stories I kept one eye on Ben. Evidently he was just
warming up for some of the more interesting challenges.
In three quarters of an hour he had already corrected about
half the Saab’s indiscretions. Now, people were starting to
pay attention.

Jeff Haslin’s Shop Otsego, MN
Jeff is an old business friend of mine who is recognized as one of the world’s premier experts on the
Franklin motor car. He gave us the two hour tour and we could have easily spent the rest of the day.
He explained that Franklins came into his life when his father bought a 1924 Franklin for his wild
older brother as John hit driving age. Of course, John promptly bought a hopped up Ford and ig-
nored the Franklin, which Jeff took over. He’s been at this ever since and his shop/collection reflects a
lifetime of dedication to the Franklin.
His collection runs from the earliest 1904 to one of the last built in 1927. Some of his cars are one of
only several left outside of museums and he drives them widely; national and local shows, the Bristol
to Brighton event in England, and just around the block for fun.
The shop puts all us “handy men” to shame. It sports two lathes, a milling machine, 10-ton press, etc,
etc. Jeff reproduces obsolete Franklin parts from crankcases and cylinder heads to intricate hubcaps.
His life with Franklins is captivating and he regaled us with tales of friendships with Phil Hill, Jay
Leno and a brief stint as a movie extra with one of his Franklins.
He and his father built a ¼ size replica of an early Franklin for his son Eric which actually ran. They
took the car to a national Franklin meet and the eight-year old Eric gave rides all weekend to the fasci-
nated adult collectors. Son Eric, now at engineering school in Michigan is into Wankel rotary engines.

Jeff ’s father also has a large shop just south of him and evidently it is just as impressive and packed
with Franklins (full paint booth no less).
His enthusiasm for the Franklin is so infectious that I would go acquire one if I didn’t already have a
garage full of nasty old water cooled British stuff. I did make a mental commitment to get back up to
Jeff ’s for a Franklin run on a gravel road this summer; just like it was in 1910 according to Jeff! How
many of us would purposely drive our cars at speed on a gravel road?

Once again Dick and Leila Jones provided
the Jag Club with a truly unique and
memorable night of jazz. Tucked away in
downtown St. Paul one finds a place called
the Artists’ Quarters in the dark lower level

British Sports Car
Encantmen
by Jerry Wolfe
The first time I became aware of the existence of British sports cars
was when I went to an SCCA race with my dad and we were blown
away watching a jet black Jaguar tearing up the track. It must have
been an XK 140 or 150 FHC and what struck me about the car was
how it sounded and how it looked!
I was much too young for driving then but I certainly was interested
in cars. There were very few sports cars on the streets but I learned to
spot the make, year and model of any car I saw just from tail lights or
any portion of the car I could see.
As I approached driving age and, more importantly, ownership age,
sports cars were a bit more common but I considered them out of
reach. I would see MGs, Healeys and Triumphs on the road but Jags
were scarce.
The defining moment for my automotive ownership adventures took Jerry Wolfe’s prized E-Type … OOOWWWW! … Need we say more?
