Superintendent’s Message ... by Gary T. Mix
Dear Students, Parents and Community Members,
The Class of 2011 is the ninth graduating class that I have had the pleasure
of observing in school, in athletics, in fine and performing arts and in their support
of worthwhile class, school and community needs. During the course of the nine
years, I have been very impressed with the intellectual capabilities of so many of
our seniors, as well as with the talent, the work ethic and the commitment that our
seniors demonstrate. As with preceding graduating classes, the Class of 2011
has many graduates of outstanding character and leadership. They are genuinely
good people who care about others and who we can trust will be successful in
their future endeavors. The Class of 2011 is an easy class to root for because
they are such quality people.
It might be interesting for community residents to know that in the 2011
rankings of Western New York school districts, Pembroke was once again the highest rated school district
in Genesee, Wyoming and Orleans counties. Additionally, Pembroke was rated very high for administrative
efficiency.
There is no doubt that the ability of the Class of 2011 contributed in a major way to the academic
success enjoyed by our school district.
Congratulations to the graduates and their parents and guardians for a job well done.
I would like to also take this opportunity to recognize and thank Dr. Arthur Mruczek, Mr. Toby Beahan,
and the entire Dollars for Scholars committee for their outstanding work in developing more scholarship
opportunities for Pembroke graduating seniors. On June 9th more than ten individual scholarships were
awarded to graduating seniors under the Dollars for Scholars program. Dr. Mruczek had the vision and
initiated the planning for Dollars for Scholars several years ago and through his, and the committee’s efforts,
our graduates will continue to benefit far into the future. If alumni and community members are considering
ways of giving to future generations, please consider either supporting or starting a Dollars for Scholars
contribution.
Thank you for a very successful school year and best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable summer
vacation.
Please Remember to Celebrate Responsibly This Graduation Season
Graduation is a very special event in your child’s life and is cause for celebration with friends and family
alike. We want to remember this exciting time, and look back in the future with great memories. However,
we hear all too often that these celebrations result in tragedy when our children decide to drink.
Parents who give alcohol or allow the consumption by their children and their friends under any circum-
stance, even in their own homes, are breaking the law. Parents and adults are also criminally liable if
anything happens to one of our young people in this circumstance.
Remember to celebrate responsibly this graduation season:
* Talk with your children about the dangers of underage drinking.
* Refuse to supply alcohol or allow drinking at your home.
* Make sure no one brings alcohol to your home.
* Contact the parents of the house where your child is going to
make sure that there will be adult supervision.
With these thoughts, know that the community wants the best for
our youth to live long, happy and successful lives. It’s time to celebrate,
let’s do it safely. Thank you.

Honoring
Our

On May 11, the Pembroke School community
recognized our local veterans with an evening filled
with patriotism, music and song and the reading of
sobering letters from the battlefield. The program,
which took place in the High School Auditorium,
honored the members of V.F.W. Post 9000 from Corfu

The evening began with a welcome by Mr. Mix and
the posting of colors by Boy Scouts Matt Allen and
Alex McVay. With the flags on stage, the audience
sang our National Anthem led by the Senior High
Choir under the direction of Mr. Dan Reisdorf. Music throughout the evening was performed by the Pembroke
Community Band, the Saxophone Ensemble and the Brass Ensemble, arranged by Mr. Tom Dylag and Mr.
Ben Chaffee. Mr. Andy Clark led his Intermediate School Choraliers in a number of patriotic songs.
Battlefield letters were read between musical pieces. The readers included Joe Babcock, Ryan Seward,
Brendan O’Shea, Shelby O’Neill and Alyssa Houseknecht. Prior to each student reading, Mr. Greg Kinal
established the context of the battle with additional information.
The veterans were escorted to their seats and on stage by our Junior High ushers including Megan Neff,
Amanda Shaw, Karen Glomb, Sage Hopkins, Quinn Audsley, Grace Fingerlow, Sindel Wille and Emma
Patterson.
The finale of the evening was the presentation of medals by Mr. Mix and Mr. Palmer. The medals were
jointly made by students in Art and Technology under the direction of Mr. DiGiulio and Mr. Johnson. A reception
was held for the veterans and audience in the school cafeteria.

PRINCIPAL’S Pembroke Primary School
Mr. Jeff Evoy, Principal
C Keep Reading and Learning
O The 2010-11 school year has come to an end and our students and
staff had a tremendous year. Unfortunately, during the summer months
families get so busy with a multitude of activities that reading can fall by the
R wayside. I would encourage our families to make reading a top priority in
order to continue the progress our students made this school year. Parents
N can make reading a priority by modeling reading the newspapers or a
favorite book. Parents are the first and most important teachers in the eyes
E of their children.
Research is extremely clear that regardless of other activities, the
best predictor of summer loss or summer gain is whether or not a child
R reads during the summer. Children need books to read and are encouraged
to visit the Corfu Library at least once per week to find books that will peak
their interest.
Just a reminder, the Summer Reading Adventures will be in session at the Primary School from July 18-August
12th for students entering Kindergarten through fourth grade. It is my hope that all of our students enjoy all that summer
has to offer, while at the same time continuing the progress during the school year in reading.
See you in September!

PRINCIPAL’S Pembroke Intermediate School
Mr. Matthew Calderón, Principal
C “The Middle Child”
I like Oreo cookies, and I like every part of them! Sometimes I eat
O ‘em in parts and sometimes I just gobble ‘em down whole. No matter how
you slice it, Nabisco got it right when they created the O-R-E-O! Of course,
R I especially like the double-stuff… While every part of the Oreo is yummy to
my tummy, I must admit that the middle portion is my favorite.
N I was recently watching a documentary on Netflix about three brothers.
The mom pointed out to her middle son that he was like the stuffing of an
Oreo cookie. She must have known about all of the psychology behind birth
E order and so on, and she wanted to make sure her middle son knew how
special he was to her. I liked the analogy, and it made me think of the
R Intermediate School. We are the middle child of the district.
Being in the middle comes with great responsibility. The Primary
School does a fantastic job of preparing students for the next level, and we
need to make sure we continue to build upon their hard work and dedication. Then, on the other end, we need to make
sure our 6th graders are as ready as possible for “the Big House.” Working in a district that has three award-winning
schools is quite a blessing to me, and I have enjoyed being in the middle these past eight years. I look forward to seeing
how successful our kids will continue to be in the future. In the meantime, I wish everyone a great summer!

A group of about 20 students, staff, faculty and community members have worked

Starting this fall, the Outdoor Classroom and Garden space will be used as an
extension of the indoor classroom space as well as a place for community members to visit.
During school hours, teachers and students alike look forward to new learning experiences
involved with growing vegetables, technology and design, science, math, writing, reading, art,
just to name a few. We are also hoping that the food we grow in the garden can be used to
feed our students or community members in the future. Next year, Mrs. Dettbarn’s Applied
Science class will be studying sustainability and use of resources using the garden. After
school hours, until dark, the community is welcomed to respectfully enjoy the garden space,
student work and plant life. We are hoping to add more garden space, native plant gardens,
walkways, benches and an all-season greenhouse to this space over the next 2-3 years. Our

PRINCIPAL’S Pembroke Jr./Sr. High School
C Mr. Keith Palmer, Principal
There are a couple of pretty big school initiatives coming down the
O pike for next year. And if pike doesn’t look right to you it’s probably
because you’ve been saying “…coming down the pipe,” for the last twenty
R years. Pike is the original expression, short for turnpike, which was the
actual tollbooth to begin with, but by association, came to mean the road
itself. So when something was coming down the pike, it really meant
N coming down the road. And when someone with dirt in his ears heard the
expression, he thought the person was saying pipe instead of pike and
E started saying the phrase incorrectly, which spread quickly. I’m guessing
because more people know what a pipe is than a pike.
Now that I have that out of the way, one major initiative deals with a
R change in curriculum. The new curriculum is known as the Common Core
Learning Standards. In a nutshell, the governors across the country worked
with a number of groups to develop common learning standards that dig deeper on fewer topics. That is definitely an
oversimplification but the intent is to better prepare our young people for both college and careers while doing a better
job competing globally. I encourage you to take a closer look at what will be happening. Visit http://
www.corestandards.org/ to see what it’s all about. This initiative, I believe, can be very good for our kids if done the
right way. Feel free to drop me a line if you would like to discuss. Or is it “drop a dime?”
