X-RAY TECHNICIAN IV
DESCRIPTION OF.WORK
Work in this class involves advanced technical skill in the special application of Radiologic techniques
to surgical procedures, supervision of special procedures personnel, and initiation of all administrative
functions and policies in Special Procedure Sections.
As Chief Special Procedures Technician, employees participate in and are responsible for the
application of special techniques in making radiographs involving the nervous system, circulatory
system, heart, brain, or the use of radioactive materials. Teaching responsibilities include practical
instruction and evaluation of students in Special Diagnostic Radiologic Programs. Work of this class is
performed independently under general supervision of a Radiologist and is evaluated for adequate
production standards by the Chief Technician in charge of the Radiology Department.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES PERFORMED
Interrelates activities of assigned section to other sections of the department and to other hospital
departments.
Plans utilization of staff time and capabilities. Prepares work schedules, duty assignments, and
emergency changes or substitutes. Approves time off and arranges coverage during absence.
Trains, appraises, counsels section personnel. Informs them of policy and procedure changes related
to their work.
Enforces rules and regulations; interprets policies; and explains procedures as they apply to area of
assignments.
Sets up and operates x-ray machines, automatic injectors, and x-ray recording equipment to make
specialized x-rays, x-ray movies and closed circuit telecasts of the various systems of the human body.
Assures that special procedure rooms are prepared properly and materials are assembled. Maintains
orderliness and cleanliness to include sterile techniques.
Positions and immobilizes patients as required. Confers with patients to allay fears and anxieties and to
elicit cooperation.
Maintains adequate records involving patient care, procedures, and purchases.
Directs the procurement of supplies and supervises the storage, control, and utilization.
Supervises the proper handling and maintenance of equipment. Consults with service representatives
and arranges for repairs.
Participates in orientation and educational programs for staff and students.
Studies new radiological procedures, equipment and methods and participates in the evaluation of their
application. Tests new ideas for improvement and implements new and/ or revised procedures and
techniques.
RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques, and operating principles involved in the operation of
x-ray equipment.
Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the processing of x-ray film and plates.
Considerable knowledge of human anatomy and the proper positioning of patients to secure desired
radiographs.
Considerable knowledge of safety procedures employed with radiation hazards.
Considerable knowledge of medical problems encountered and the ability to give first aid and handle
emergency situations.
Ability to supervise and train subordinate technicians and student technicians.

Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from high school supplemented by a course of training in x-ray technology and three years
of experience that includes one year in special procedures in the operation of x-ray equipment; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience.
